Limassol hammered by Air & Artillery as final assault on city begins

Akrotiri, Cyprus-
Turkish Air & Artillery Units have been pounding the city of Limassol since just before dawn this morning. The onslaught has been unending. One British observer from the Sovereign Base Area told ACN that "based on the number of sorties that have flown over the city in the past few hours, it's very likely that more tonnage of bombs have been dropped on Limassol than all others combined since the invasion began". For the Turks, they seem hell bend on destroying the Cypriots before the final assault goes in. Their Western Strike Force, which has already been slowed by the destruction of several mountain passes by Cypriot Special Forces, has further been delayed by EOKA-III fighters in the Troodos Mountains.

It is not clear how many soldiers the Cypriot National Guard has remaining at this point for it's final stand in Limassol. What is known is that nearly all of the CNG's heavy equipment has either been destroyed. Yet, the commander of the Limassol redoubt, Brigadier General Grigoris Liberatos, has stated his fighter's will fight "to the very last man".

I wonder what Duke supporters are like? Any chance they're a basket of deplorables who will storm the Capitol?
Although he is like Trump on some level (he has a big ego, he shouts his mouth off, and does make some stupid comments) he should not be regarded as just a straight analogue to Trump. (His back ground is different, he isn't a millionaire, he isn't a womaniser like Trump, Indeed Duke would see paying off a porn star after an affair during marriage, just as big a sin as being gay or abortion, Duke served in the Senate for over 20 years, Trump had never held office when he ran in OTL in 2015). If anything we are combining Trump with someone like Rick Santorum who was my big inspiration for Duke running (running for the Presidency after a losing a Senate seat). Duke of course does have support from the crazy right, but also from the likes of the ACA, and those who believe (wrongly) that Peter Gault was cheated out of the GOP nomination in 2018 by the party establishment.

Duggan calls for " ceasefire" in Cyprus
Prime-Minister Michael Duggan addressing MP's in the House of Commons for the first time since the invasion of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkish forces last Tuesday called for a "ceasefire". He also said that the UK would not any circumstances withdraw from its two sovereign base areas on the island.

"I am calling for ceasefire straight away. I believe that we have done the correct thing by admitting as many Greek Cypriot refugees into the two UK areas as possible" he also rejected calls the calls from the Turkish Government to had over Cypriot President Stavros Velkos and members of his government who where given sanctuary by the UK at the UK Sovereign base territory at Akrotori in early hours of yesterday morning.

Labour leader Jack Coll condemned the Turkish invasion but asked why the "Intelligence services failed to pick up signs of the Turkish plan to invade" and "who was involved in the decision to let President Velkos into the UK soverign base area". Duggan replied on the second question "that is he really suggesting that I should of called a cabinet meeting at 2.am in the morning to discuss it, I had to make a snap decision, I did and it was the correct one".

Secretary of State flies commercial after 757 plane breaks down

Rome
— US Secretary of State August Adair flew to Rome aboard Aegean Airlines Flight 3654 today instead of in his Air Force Boeing 757 after it was grounded due to a leak in an auxiliary fuel tank. The secretary was in Greece, meeting with Greek leaders over the situation in Cyprus, before he was scheduled to fly to Rome to meet with Italian prime minister Manuel Boschetti to discuss Italian and European Union plans to establish refugee camps for those displaced from the conflicts in Libya and Cyprus.

The discovery of the leak postponed the meeting with Boschetti for a few hours, but the secretary seemed to take the delay in stride, joking that "negotiating over who gets the window seat" was a welcome change of pace.

The 73 year-old secretary has been forced to cancel several scheduled appearances in the past two weeks after the invasion of Cyprus by Turkish forces. The diplomatic and political crisis, as well as the disintegration of central authority in Libya, has resulted in him "making the rounds" in capitals around the Mediterranean, moving back and forth between Rome, Athens and the Turkish capital of Ankara in an effort to find a diplomatic solution to stop the fighting. Visits to Libya's neighbors of Egypt and Tunisia have also been on the agenda of the nation's top diplomat. Adair also visited the Holy Land to re-affirm the United States' commitment to the Ankara Agreement as religious and ethnic conflict has been reignited on an island less than 300 miles away.

Canadian election 2021: Van Merhalls kicks off election campaign
PM says Canadians will make "a pivotal decision about the direction of our country"

September 8, 2021

Canadians will make a "pivotal decision about the direction" of the country, Prime Minister Leslie Van Merhalls said today after confirming the start of the federal election campaign. Van Merhalls travelled to Rideau Hall to ask Governor-General Luc Doucette to dissolve Parliament, triggering Canada's 43rd general election. The vote will be held on October 18th, per the fixed term provisions of the Elections Act.

Speaking outside Rideau Hall after announcing the start of the campaign, Van Merhalls argued that an experienced leader was needed to re-ignite a struggling economy.

"Now is not the time to enact risky plans that jeopardize our future," Van Merhalls warned. "This is a time to stay the course."

Van Merhalls' Conservatives will spend the next 40 days pitching themselves to Canadians on the party's accomplishments, including strong economic growth through much of their 11 years in power.

The party hopes that this message will resonate with voters, who have ranked economic issues high on their list of priorities according to recent CBC polling.

Liberal leader Kate Sansellfort launched her party's campaign from Vancouver, speaking to voters seeking a change.

"If people are seeking change, it is because this economy isn't working for them," Sansellfort said in a speech. "We must make our economy here in Canada work for everyone."

James Addison, the longtime head of the NDP, criticized the government for its "failure" on the economy, and the Liberals for offering "toothless" solutions, from a rally in Saskatoon.

"Fixing stagnant wages, rising inequality and economic uncertainty requires more than doubling down on failed policy or producing nice soundbites," Addison told partisans. "It requires a willingness to look at the fundamental problems in our economy, and the courage to challenge even the most powerful interests."

Bloc Québécois leader Maxime Brossard, speaking in Montreal, asked Quebeckers to think of where they wanted to go "not as a province, but as a nation." The Bloc leader, who was elected in January to replace long-time party head Jean-Marc Beaumont, dedicated the election campaign to his predecessor, who had led the party for two decades by the time he retired.

The Greens, the fifth party represented in Parliament, kicked off the campaign at leader Dzifa Peters' campaign headquarters in Toronto. Peters, the first visible minority to lead a federal party, is running in Toronto Centre. She unveiled the party's ambitious, but uncosted, plan that, among other things, would achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, end the use of fossil fuels, and establish free university.

Polling hazy heading into campaign

According to CBC's Polling Tracker aggregator, an aggregation of all publicly available polling data, the campaign will begin with polls showing inconsistent numbers. In terms of party support, the Conservatives maintain a incredibly narrow lead over the Liberals with the NDP within ten percentage points of taking the lead. However, Sansellfort has a wide lead over Addison and Van Merhalls in polls asking Canadians which party leader they would prefer to be prime minister.

Finally, there are wide disparities in seat projection models, with most forecasting a minority government of some kind, equally divided between those models projecting the Liberals to be the ones who would form a government, and others the Conservatives.

Should the Conservatives win a fourth term in office, it will be the first time a non-Liberal party has won four elections consecutive elections under multiple leaders.

I cannot see a way that the US keeps Turkey or Greece in NATO at this point. As if we don’t do as Turkey asks they’ll leave NATO, if we do as they ask, Greece leaves NATO. The question will be who leaving NATO is more tolerated? And if we try to take a middle path no promise it won’t piss off both countries.

Seeing as Turkey tried to use Article V to block response to their invasion I say kick em out and have done
To play Devil's advocate for a moment... This isn't an easy crisis to resolve. Cyprus is not a NATO member, sure it might have members of a NATO member military on the island, but Cyprus itself is not a member (oddly enough because Turkey would never allow it for... the above. ) One other part of the geopolitical calculus at play is that Turkey has been for years at odds with NATO over a variety of things... but still is a member for two reasons: Russia, and Middle East Access. I'm not inclined to think the WWU national analogs will do nothing... but from a strategic calculus view... there's not a whole lot of options on the table for NATO in this scenario really.

As I said probably Greece will leave NATO as it is probably one most members will tolerate leaving.

Ground Assault on Limassol begins as Turks make final push to crush resistance

Akrotiri, Cyprus-
Following 3 days and nights of intense aerial and artillery bombardments, the Turkish Army launched it's ground assault on the Cypriot redoubt in the city of Limassol. The destruction has been intense, with observes noting that "nearly the entire city has been reduced to rubble". Despite the earlier claims of Brigadier General Grigoris Liberatos that the Cypriot defenders would "fight to the last man", it is not clear what remains of the Cypriot defenses in the city. A source within the Turkish Ministry of Defense said that the Turkish Government is confident in a "swift end" to the conflict, and that the Limassol, would soon be "liberated" from "Greek oppression".

Elsewhere on the island, Turkish Special Forces have been gun a series of search & destroy sweeps in the Troodos Mountains, hoping to clear the area of EOKA-III militants.

Limassol falls as Turks declare victory; begin mop-up operations

Akrotiri, Cyprus-
The final Cypriot defenders have surrender as the Turkish Army declared victory today in Limassol. Though mop-up operations still remain in effect across the island, the Turkish government declared "major combat operations" to be over. As for the city and it's population, the story is much different. Nearly all of the city has been leveled by the attack, and there is fear of massive casualties among the civilian population. British forces in the Sovereign Base Areas remain on alert, but at this hour there seems to be no movement by the Turks to take them by force. ACN Military commentator Mike Tapley has called a potential Turkish move to seize the SBAs by force "unlikely in the current scenario"
