Andrew Wu enters Presidential race

Former North Carolina Governor Andrew Wu has become the eighth candidate to enter the race for the 2022 Republican presidential nomination. Wu has long been regarded as a probable presidential candidate. He sat out the 2018 race which surprised many.

His opening pitch for the nomination was focused fully on his record as Governor " My administration here in the great state of North Carolina showed the way. We became number one in job creation and number one in small business creation. one million new jobs, four % growth, higher family income, eight balanced budgets, and middle class tax cuts eight years in a row that saved our people and businesses over fifteen billion dollars. I have done it before, and I can do it again in Washington".

Although he didn't name President Seaborn by name he took square aim at him " We don’t need another president who merely holds the top spot among the pampered elites of Washington. We need a president willing to challenge and disrupt the whole culture in our nation’s capital" adding " I will be that president because I was a reforming governor, not just another member of the club, there is no passing off responsibility when you’re a Governor".

Despite what commentators are calling a strong opening speech he is facing a race to catch up in terms of fundraising, endorsements and genuine support against the front-runners of Ohio Senator Ruth Norton-Stewart, Michigan Governor Ben Laurion and former Oklahoma Senator Alan Duke.

Cast
Tommy Clark as Thom Grunder (new casting)
Rick Worthy as Daryl Lukins
Mathieu Amalric as Benoît Martin
Christopher Lee as Sir Kenneth Paton
Daniel von Bargen as Jack Shannon

Grunder is the current Dean of the House of Representatives. The Dean's only real role is to preside over the elections for the Speaker of the House, otherwise he's (so far the role has only been held by men) just the longest-serving current representative.

Grunder is essentially TWW's answer to Collin Peterson, so a lot of his background & biography is lifted from Peterson's. Like Grunder, his actor is a testament to longevity: he's been making movies for 80 years after debuting as a child actor in 1940.

Fun bits of trivia:
  • Grunder is TTL's longest serving member of Congress from Minnesota at 48 years & counting. He's also in the top ten in both longest-serving representatives & members of Congress.
  • Grunder and William Wiley (who was a congressman from 1973-1983 before leaping to the Senate) are the only remaining members of Congress who served during either the Nixon or Ford administrations.
  • Grunder's predecessor as House Ag chairman (Martin) was a high-profile scalp taken during Walken's 2010 election.
  • Yes, Odin Langen was a real person. Sometimes Minnesota stereotypes are true.
  • With Noah Gellman's defeat in 2020, Grunder is now the Democrat who represents the most Republican district (MN-07 is R+17).
Lukins was established here, essentially as TTL's J.C. Watts but as a basketball player. The only changes I've made to his biography are having him get married in the 11 years between the linked post and *now*.

His birthplace is a nod to Watchmen, and his NBA career is based off of Oklahoma native Brent Price, whose OTL career roughly overlaps with Lukins'.

No word yet on if he and Rudi Robinson have bonded over being able to absolutely demolish every other senator in pick-up basketball games.
Not a whole lot about the new president of France that's exceptionally notable. A general overview is that Martin slowly rose through the ranks of the Socialist Party, rebounding from losing his seat in the 2001 legislative elections to becoming a frontbench minister in 2006 and then eventually becoming the party leader in 2014 where he entered the story when he led the Socialists to victory in the 2018 legislative elections.
A brief overview of Paton's career was listed by Mark here. I've expanded on his career in the Thatcher government a bit by listing the frontbench positions he accumulated in the latter half of Thatcher's tenure.

Most fun bit I've added is his wife's maiden name being a reference to his character in Star Wars.
Shannon's biography was done here way back in 2013.

The few bits I added were Shannon's birthplace (a military base where his father was training as a fighter pilot), added his former command of Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC) and added a few decorations (his Bronze Stars & Purple Hearts) based off other military portrayals von Bargen did.

I did a little editing to give Shannon's uniform the proper Air Force blue color and give him the correct Air Force badge.

Operation Swift Fury was the name given to the evacuation of the Haitian embassy in the first episode of Season 3.
How did you choose the name of the other co-prince of Andorra

Breaking News:

Richard Samuels to stand down as Prime-Minister

In a shock announcement Prime-Minister Richard Samuels has announced that he is standing down as Prime-Minister and leader of the Conservative Party as soon as a successor can be elected.

The announcement was made just after 10.00 am this morning, and it caught Westminster by surprise. "It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as Prime-Minister of this great nation, but after speaking to my family we have decided it is time for me to step a-side". "I will formally resign as leader of the Conservative party two weeks today, Friday June 4th. I will of course stay as Prime-Minister until a successor can be elected". In the brief statement he praised the work of his government during his over six years as Prime-Minister "I am very proud of the government I have led, I think we have some real achievements, and I know that the party has some incredible talent from which to choose the next leader".

It appears not even the Prime-Minister closest and senior colleagues, had any idea that the announcement was coming. Senior Ministers including the Home Secretary Michael Duggan, the Chancellor Kevin Grimes and the Foreign Secretary Fiona Wallace all took to Twitter to praise their boss.

It will be up to David Wright, the Chair of the Conservative 1922 Committee to confirm the timetable for the leadership election, but early indications are that the new Prime-Minister will be in place by the end of the current session of Parliament at the end of July.

Whoa was not expecting the British PM to step down. Very unexpected
We like to surprise people. From a story point of view, it is time, he has been PM from March 2015, and compared to the real world that is good going. It also means he is giving his successor at least two years before the next General Election which is required by September 2023. Also means we can have two months of a leadership election.

Fair enough. Looking forward to seeing who his successor will be. Btw how's the Special Relationship going under President Seaborn?

1922 Committee Meeting confirms Conservative Leadership timetable & rules

Following the shock decision of Prime-Minster Richard Samuels to stand down as Prime-Minister and leader of the Conservative party, the 1922 Committee held an emergency committee meeting this afternoon at the House of Commons to decide the timetable for the election of a new leader.

Chairman David Wright has confirmed to the BBC the timetable:

Richard Samuels has also confirmed that he will abstain from voting in the balloting and that he will be staying on as an MP until the next General Election. He is just of three MP's still the House of the Commons to have been elected at the 1979 General Election.

None of the expected contenders such as Home Secretary Michael Duggan, Foreign Secretary Fiona Wallace or Chancellor of the Exchequer Kevin Grimes have yet to make any announcement regards to running. The decision by Richard Samuels seems to have taken the whole of the parliamentary party by surprise, with the general consensus being that he would stay as Prime-Minister until next year and he was under no pressure to stand aside. He had made it clear during the 2018 election campaign, that he would not fight another election.

It’s a little early to resign but I guess he wants to give his successor a chance to do well or Samuels has health problems,
It's not that early to be fair. It is just over half way through the Parliament ( In OTL Blair resigned two years & month or so into the 2005-2010 Parliament). He is giving his successor just over two years if he decides to go for a full Parliament (no OTL Fixed term Parliament Act here). Although there have been rumours of health issues (look at the 2018 General Election, rumours he collapsed after the final debate), he frankly just wants a couple of years on the back benchers before retiring to his Scottish farm, after all he has been in the HOC since 1979, he has been PM since March 2015 and turns 74 the day before he formally hands in his resignation.

Well I hope he is good and enjoys the back benches, maybe he’ll be on “Have I got news for you.”

I am kidding on the Have I go News For you.

I did establish that he did guest present a few episodes of the show when he wasn't on the Conservative front bench in the noughties. (Not as silly as it sounds as Boris Johnson, Neil Kinnock & William Hague all presented episodes in OTL).
