Oregon Secretary of State Confirms Seaborn Victory

At a much delayed press conference late last night Oregon Secretary of State Candice McColl confirmed that California Senator Sam Seaborn had won the state, securing it’s 7 electoral votes and moving within six electoral votes of victory.

McColl’s press conference was delayed after a final, last ditch legal bid by the Shallick campaign was thrown out by the State Supreme Court clearing the way for McColl to confirm Seaborn’s victory.

With news expected this morning from New Mexico, where previous counts had the Senator ahead, the next President of the United States may well be confirmed by lunchtime.

New ballots in New Mexico Swinging For Shallick; Minnesota Recount Could Take “Weeks”

There were signs of renewed optimism in the camp of former White House Chief of Staff Henry Shallick this morning as it became clear that the additional votes that they won a legal battle to have included are breaking in their favour.

Reports close to the count suggest that Shallick has overturned the 2000 vote deficit and has pulled into a small lead – the final recount is expected to conclude at some point this morning with the State’s Governor Rudi Vansen hopeful of confirming the result later today.

If Shallick holds onto his slender lead the race will come down entirely to Minnesota where logistical and legal issues have delayed the start of a second recount. At last count Senator Seaborn held a lead of around 3000 votes but there is a belief around the state that a significant number of votes have been called into question by both sides leading to a series of legal challenges taking place today.

Minnesota Governor Jarrod Daniels reportedly spoke with both candidates last night and confirmed his belief that as soon as the legal debates are over the state will quickly confirm the recount. Daniels has reportedly faced significant pressure from national Democrats to confirm the result.

So 269-269 is still a real possibility but only if Seaborn carries New Mexico and Shallick Minnesota.
If either man wins both states they win outright.
If Seaborn loses New Mexico but wins Minnesota he wins.
To put it clearly, Senator Seaborn can win with one of the two states, but Shallick needs to win both or we are heading to the House in January once the electoral college meets on Monday December 17th and confirms the electoral votes for both President & Vice-President.

Minnesota Democrats: “State in Play because of Hollis”

High level Minnesota Democrats have been openly briefing reporters over the last 48 hours that the only reason the state is in play is because of the presence on the party’s ticket of businessman Frank Hollis – with some claiming that internal polling with another VP candidate would have given Seaborn a double-digit victory in the state.

Sources close to Governor Jarrod Daniels claimed that the Governor is under pressure from progressive Democrats to refuse to confirm the result unless Seaborn is willing to consider forcing out his Vice-Presidential nominee, whose approval rating amongst Minnesota voters was 17% according to exit polls.

Hollis and his handling of the Inksoft outsourcing activity was raised as the key issue amongst Minnesota voters with Democrats being particularly disappointed by how it was handled.

Robinson Clings on in key Indiana Senate race

Senator Rudi Robinson, who finished third in the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination, has narrowly defeated Lieutenant Governor Kris Jennings to secure a second term in the Senate.

The former Indiana Pacers star has secured victory by around 7000 votes, with Jennings officially conceding defeat late last night. He praised Robinson for a “well fought campaign” adding that he was “pleased with how his campaign had gone.”

Senator Robinson who seems to have been negatively impacted in the race by his run for the Presidency, thanked his supporters in a statement saying that he “couldn’t wait to get back to working for the people of the great state of Indiana.”

Final Seaborn Appeal Fails; New Mexico Victory in Sight For Shallick

In the latest twist in a remarkable US election, the Supreme Court in Sante Fe has confirmed that it has rejected a request for a further appeal by the campaign of California Senator Sam Seaborn to exclude around 30,000 contentious ballots all but sealing victory for Republican Henry Shallick in the Land of Enchantment.

The court issued a statement confirming that they had decided against hearing an appeal on a decision take by the state Court of Appeals to allow the 30,000 votes to be counted. The votes predominantly came from Lea County, an area expected to return significant Republican votes – almost certainly enough to secure victory for Shallick.

Neither side was ready to declare victory or defeat but there was little doubt that the Shallick campaign was far happier with the result. Spokesman Carl Rey told reporters outside the courthouse that “the right result has been reached, all we are interested in is ensuring that every vote is counted” adding that “we are making no assumptions about who these votes are for.”

Shallick Team Go To Court in Pennsylvania; Wisconsin also possible

The chaos surrounding the Presidential election deepened further in past few minutes as the Shallick campaign confirmed they have launched legal proceedings to force a recount in Pennsylvania amid claims of voting impropriety.

A Shallick spokesman said “We have conclude that there is sufficient evidence of issues in a number of areas that a recount is required. The overall margin is less than 1% and we think it’s vital that we ensure every vote is counted.”

The campaign refused to deny that an increased legal team in Wisconsin suggested that they were preparing to launch a legal challenge in the Badger State as well.

I was thinking the same when the voting started but now, I'm really eager to see a tie. The only time I've seen one done in fiction is on Madam Secretary and they didn't give the entire attention of the show. Seeing one in action in the world of The West Wing would be brilliant ^^.

Veep did a 269-269 tie on their show, with a fair bit of coverage on the post-Election Day contingent election campaign that kind of broke credulity. It ended with the opposing candidate's running mate winning the Presidency (via the House refusing to hold another election following an initial stalemate).

House of Cards also had an election where neither candidate won 270 votes immediately (due to postponed elections in two states), resulting again in a running mate becoming Acting President (until the "crisis" was resolved).

Jack Hunter has a pretty good chance at the presidency, if other modern fiction is to be believed.

Shallick Wins New Mexico; All Eye on Minnesota

In the last few minutes it has been confirmed that Governor Henry Shallick of Missouri has won the state of New Mexico after a second recount and a series of legal challenges on both sides.

The announcement by New Mexico Governor Rudi Vansen means that he entire election will come down to a successful resolution of the race in Minnesota, notwithstanding a series of potential legal challenges in other states.

Governor Shallick responded to the announcement saying that he was “delighted” with the result and that he was pleased that “all of the votes cast were counted.”

All eyes now turn to Minnesota where the recount is currently suspended pending legal discussions on both sides – it looks increasingly likely that the result has no chance of being settled before the weekend.

A further twist appears to be high number of spoiled ballots where the name of Vice-Presidential nominee Frank Hollis has been scored out – the Seaborn campaign are reportedly pursuing a case to have these ballots included.

Following the dramatic announcement from New Mexico Governor Rudi Vansen we can update our map and can confirm:

New Mexico (5 EV) for Shallick
genusmap.php

Shallick 264

Seaborn 264
TCTC 10 (Minnesota)

The calling of New Mexico for Shallick means that unless a already called state is changed, this election will not end in a 269-269 tie. We are going to get a winner whatever happens. Although it has to be said after the events of the past three days who knows what twists are left to come.

Looks like Minnasota really did turn into the October Surprise of this election...

Hear, hear.
It would at least prove Bartlet right.

Regardless of who wins, my plans for either of them is the PRC leadership is expecting either man not wanting to be too friendly. China is pretty much going to prepare for an obtrusive administration from either man in regards from China. Possibly tariffs from either for different reasons.

You literally can't have an "October surprise" after the election has already happened.

Personally I want Sam to be president. It make Bartlet's prediction true. But if it doesn't well not much we can do.

"Sam, you're going to run for President one day. Don't be scared. You can do it. I believe in you."

It's already come true.

What? Why?

Neither Sam nor Shallick campaigned as protectionists, and the sole reason that we have a trade war IOTL is because the current president campaigned as one. In addition, what the current White House occupant lacks in both previous experience dealing with Beijing on the governmental level, clear mental faculties unimpaired by narcissism and oppositional defiant disorder, and an understanding of basic historical knowledge of worldwide economic ideas and experiences since 1929, both Seaborn & Shallick have.

Also, there is no benefit China could possibly gain from this and unless Qian has a Phineas Gage pulled on him, he's not stupid enough to do it.
