RO16/Patagonia vs Flanders
PATAGONIA AND FLANDERS CLASH IN FIRST KNOCK-OUT STAGE

The two football-mad nations of Patagonia and Flanders met in Freiburg for a hotly-anticipated round-of-sixteen match that had all the makings of a World Cup classic. King Albert II of Flanders in set to be in Germany for the match, and no doubt he will want to see his men do him proud.

Both teams had been rather free-scoring in the group stage, with 11 goals between them so far in the competition, and the presence of some leaky defences - 7 goals conceded - only increased the prospect of a goal fest.

Before the match, bookies were keen to stress Flanders' two draws as evidence of their slow start to the competition, whereas Patagonia had looked strong throughout their campaign so far, emerging in first place from a tough group that saw Peru-Bolivia, a nation with a strong football pedigree, leave for an early exit.

Odds at the start of the match:

Patagonia win: 4:1 (favourites) Draw: 7:1 Flanders win: 5:2

PATAGONIA 2 : 3 FLANDERS

Flanders continued their Cup run despite a heroic effort from Patagonia, whose late rally could not stop Flanders from progressing to the quarter finals.

The match started in electric fashion, with Eden Hazard showing what he is capable of early on with a run and pass that forced a desperate block by Stanley Calvert. With both teams playing with three at the back, it seemed certain that plenty more chances would go both ways before the end of the match.

Despite the quality of the likes of Hector Pareja, Simwnt Llewellyn and Avery Snow, Patagonia started slow and couldn't prevent Flanders from dominating the opening twenty minutes.

With not yet ten minutes played, Lukaku ran through onto a good ball played by De Bruyne, only to hit the post with his delicate chipped shot that left the Patagonian goalkeeper stranded. Five minutes later, however, he found himself through in the box again, and this time squared the ball for Christian Benteke who needed no further invitation. He rolled the ball into the net and Flanders were ahead!

Hopes that this would shake Patagonia out of their stupor were misled when Johan Cabaje combined well with De Bruyne to win a corner, which was taken by De Bruyne. His pin-point corner found the head of Jelle va Damme in the box, but he could only head wide.

Patagonia's quality, however, began to get them into the game. After a lengthy break due to an injury, an impromptu team talk from the Patagonian coach seemed to inspire the players and they seemed a different team when play restarted. Oswald Cobb fired over from distance before Whitfield rifled a shot at goal that Sammy Bossut had to deal with. Patagonia's first corner routine didn't come off, but they seemed back in the game.

So it was especially bad timing when, after 28 minutes, Stijn De Smet beat Leguizamo and played the ball through to Hazard. The Chelsea man had no problems with the finish and Flanders were 2-0 up.

The rest of the half passed quickly, with both teams doing their best to play some football and solidify the back line. Some strong counter-attacks by the Flemish team interrupted the Patagonian rhythm, but as the half drew to a close they seemed likely to score.

Until, with another rapid break-away move, Olivier Deschacht hefted the ball forward. Va Der Brughn ran onto it, and took it into the box before being tripped by Valentino Gutiérrez. The referee gave nothing, but a VAR review turned the decision into a penalty.

Lukaku struck the ball well, towards the bottom corner, but Obregón got across well to palm it away!

Unfortunately for him, he saved it straight back to a very relieved Lukaku, who converted the rebound just before the half-time whistle blew.

The sides went into the break with the match almost over already - Flanders 3, Patagonia 0!

When the teams emerged from the dugouts, the Flemish fans were still cheering.

However, the Patagonians were determined. They had brought on Francis Barker at half-time. It seemed a strange decision to put on a defensive midfielder, but Barker provided the glue that kept the team together.

Building down the centre, and with the Flemish attacks to an extent neutralised, the Chillas were slowly getting back into the match (again). Julio Salamanca was looking especially lively, and just after the hour mark he got on the end of a Leguizamo cross to head the ball at goal from the edge of the box. The ball was headed comfortably wide until Avery Snow, with a sublime poacher's instinct, got his foot on the ball. It was a goal, but more importantly, it was hope.

In the following minutes, no defence in the world could have stopped Patagonia from launching a barrage of attacks that were ferocious and yet clinical as well. The Patagonian forwards attacked, as did the midfielders, as did the defenders - the South Americans were now playing total football that was a joy to watch.

However, it wasn't yielding results. Whitfield hit the bar, Calvert hit both posts, and Snow came close with another effort, but Sammy Bossut in the Flanders goal was having the game of his life.

After 81 minutes, the breakthrough came. Captain Snow, who had dropped back to provide his abilities as a playmaker, hit a nice one-two with Adam Holmes and rounded two defenders to score what must count as one of the goals of the tournament, with a fantastic low drive that even Bossut could do nothing about.

The match entered its final minute.

Francis Barker stopped a Hazard dribble before playing ball up to Whitfield. Whitfield attacked down the left, passing the ball to Holmes. He knocked it to Calvert, who almost lost the ball to Vertonghn before he got in a cross that whistled across the face of goal. It was picked up by Salamanca on the other side, and he hit a ball into the box. Snow chested it down, and stuck a point-blank effort at goal..!

Bossut, diving to his right, saw it flash by his post.

The referee blew his whistle.

The match was over! 3-2 to Flanders!

Tamazgha 1 - 2 a.e.t. Great Lakes Republic

Goals: 1 - 0 Saphir (43')
1 - 1 Kitchen (84')
1 - 2 Morales (105') (p)

Yellow cards: 1 - 3
Red cards: 0 - 0
Corners: 6 - 4
Free kicks less than 40 m: 2 - 2

Referee: Shinji Omae (Hoenn): Grade C:
No major mistakes, but should have booked Eric Lichaj (40') as well as Messani Khalil (90+4') and awarded another corner to Tamazgha (Kitchen was last to touch the ball, 118'). Generally, somewhat too lenient.

As we now are in the knockout stage, and no players were injured or barred due to a second yellow card, both players fielded their ostensibly best teams, with Atrahr Selah returning to the Tamazghan team after a question mark over his fitness only allowed substitution in the third group match.

This match started with almost twenty minutes of trying to avoid a mistake. A Tamazghan corner, brought in by Azad Kharroubi and headed by Axamux Bashara directly onto the goalkeeper (13'), is probably the most noteworthy situation of this part of the game. Nevertheless, one could come to believe that Tamazgha might be a bit superior over the team from the Great Lakes. Unfortunately though, Abdelkader Fouen could not partake in this match anymore as he injured himself on an attempt to run down the right wing. The opposing team was not involved, but Fouen had to be substituted out for Chemiaam.
Who initiated first truly offensive and dangerous situation when he dribbled, with quite a lot of speed, into the Great Lakes penalty area, outrunning Timothy Ream, but just as he wanted to cross to Amulas Saphir, Lichaj anticipated the ball and made it into a corner (29')!

And this served as a warning shot to the Great Lakes team, but was also a booster to morale and vitalised Tamazgha even more.
Tamazgha was more active and wanted to score a goal before half-time, but after all, a set piece had to serve as the opportunity: Timothy Ream fouled Mattara Chemiaam on the right wing, but not really near the touch line. Chemiaam himself it was who brought in this free kick, perfectly onto the head of Amulas Saphir! No chance for Guzan! 1-0 Saphir (43')!

Not much happened before half-time, but this did not become much better in the second half. Tamazgha wanted to defend this result, and it was the Great Lakes Republic who substituted some offensive players. Some more offensive actions did occur, but not many of them became dangerous. Nasrallah saved against Shipp (60') and against Morales (72'), with Pulisic (55', 68', 80') and Sargent (74') shooting wide of the goal. A counterattack (Saphir 65', Battuta 71') could be prevented with Guzan saving (65') or Lichaj (71') clearing the ball for a throw-in.
But then, the Great Lakes opened up even more and took greater risks. Perry Kitchen won the ball in his own half, just behind the centre circle, and his risky pass found Alfredo Morales. He had to wait until several of his team had run up, but played the ball onto the right wing of Christian Pulisic. Under pressure, he managed to cross the ball to Sargent, Sargent onto Shipp, and Shipp shot (84'). Hasdrubal Haddad first deflected the ball, but immediately back to Perry Kitchen! And he shot it into the right corner! The equaliser! 1-1 Kitchen (84')

The Great Lakes Republic wanted to finish this within regular time and tried to score again: Nasrallah saved against Pulisic's well-placed shot (85') and against a volley from Alfredo Morales (88'), but Tamazhga followed up with several dangerous counterattacks: Guzan had to show all his abilities making Amulas Saphir's header into a corner (87') and saving a shot from the distance by Meztata Shahid (90+2').

But the score remained equal, and extra time became necessary. It seemed that not much was going on in the first half of extra time, up to the last minutes of it. And it was the Great Lakes who tried something against an obviously tired Tamazgha - and Perry Kitchen was again instrumental: He, after winning a duel against Atrahr Selah, passed it out onto the left wing to Alfredo Morales, Morales with a change of sides to Pulisic, and he into the centre. But before the low ball could reach Grella, Atrahr Selah cleared it for another corner!
The first corner, brought in by Morales, was again cleared for a second corner - this time from the right corner arc - when Saphir headed it out. Again, Morales brought the corner into the penalty area. Several Great Lakes players were prepared to head it in, it came onto Michele Grella! And it was cleared again by Maday Bina!
But suddenly, the VAR wanted to intervene - and indeed, Maday Bina had handled the ball! Penalty kick for the Great Lakes Republic!
And there were disputes who was to shoot this penalty. Originally, Pulisic was thought to be responsible, but Alfredo Morales took the ball away from him! And it was Morales against Nasrallah!
Morales shot this penalty hard and secure into the lower right corner! Nasrallah had guessed the corner, but was without a chance! 1-2 Morales (105')!

Three minutes of injury time and a full second half of extra time did not change this result anymore, despite a fourth substitution by Tamazgha. The Great Lakes Republic proved clever and stable enough to keep possession of the ball for most of this second half of extra time and, should a Tamazghan counterattack arise, intervene quickly enough. The only real chance, where Guzan had to intervene, occurred when Chemiaam brought in a free kick and there was some disorder in the penalty area, but in the end, Guzan had the ball in his hands safely (118').

The Great Lakes thus advance a further round into the quarterfinals of this World Cup, where they will be up against either the home team of the Syndicalist American States or against the Dutch Republic!

Good morning, or indeed good evening as it still is here in Erfurt. My name is Cuthbert Chin and I'm with Zhao Lee and Gao Ruyin to bring you coverage of what is shaping up to be a very exciting match between the SAS and the Dutch Republic to decide who plays the Great Lakes Republic in the quarter-finals. With both teams rated so highly, neither would have wanted to draw the other, especially this early on in the competition, but the nature of the knockouts means that one of them will be going home tonight. The SAS in particular were many people's pick to win the tournament coming into it but Zhao, how much has this changed during the groups?

Well the SAS haven't look fazed so far in the tournament. Their performances have been good, their morale is good. Facing the Dutch so early isn't what they wanted, but you have to beat good teams to win the World Cup, so there is no reason to suddenly doubt them. What may let them down is their defence. In all three group matches they've conceded exactly one goal, whether it be against strong teams like Asturias or plucky minnows Shannon. If their defence can't stay on it for 90 minutes, it could be their downfall and the Dutch Republic are certainly capable of capitalising on such mistakes. And while Thompson is still injured, Vincent St. John has really come alive, to the point where even if Thompson does recover by the end of the tournament, he might have a hard time getting back into the starting lineup.

Gao, the Dutch certainly wouldn't have expected to go into their Round of 16 match as the underdog, but can they pull the upset here?

As Zhao said, the Dutch area a capable team that can capitalise on any mistakes the SAS make so you can't rule them out here but they have been making mistakes of their own, even more so than the SAS. We talked before about how unlucky they were to be drawn against us because we could challenge for the top of the group, but in the end they only narrowly managed second, requiring a last minute goal to hold the Caribbean to a draw. That sort of performance isn't indicative of a team that can threaten the SAS. They'll need to tap into their pre-tournament form if they want to win.

19:53
The players are on the pitch. Zhao, Gao, it's time to make your predictions.

The SAS have this for me. 2-1 I think.

I agree the SAS will win. 2-1 or 3-1.

I think the Dutch may be able to cling on to extra time, but the SAS will clinch this by one goal. Your commentators for this match are Steve Sanderson and Mike Wong.

19:57
The Dutch Republic have won the coin toss and will kick off.

00:00
Winterink kicks off to Romarinho.

02:57
Snijer plays the ball on to Romarinho. Romarinho dribbles wide past Dristi and with a piece of skill rounds McCluskey too and continues to run to the end of the pitch. He then has to wait a few seconds for his teammates to catch up, having to dribble around McCluskey again in the process before crossing the ball into the box, onto the head of Taffarel who sends the ball just wide, much to the relief of Talal Ali Silo.

07:33
Da Souza tackles Taffarel and passes wide to Andersson. Andersson runs forward before knocking it onto Apel, who quickly squares to St. John. St. John continues the run forward beyond do Nascimento and plays wide to Dristi who passes up to Germany. Germany dribbles down the wing, but is tackled by Viera and the ball goes out for a throw in. Germany quickly throws in to Dristi, who makes a curling pass up to St. John, who heads the ball into the box for Leigen, but Leigen cannot properly connect and the shot goes wide.

11:28
Gaël Germany passes to Dristi. Dristi dribbles the ball out wide past Snijer and passes up to Loïc Germany. Germany is blocked by Viera, so instead cuts inside and shoots from the edge of the box - and scores! Lehmann has no response as the ball sails in to the top corner! The SAS take an early lead!

11:48
GOAL
13 - Loïc GERMANY

15:17
de Boer makes a long pass up to do Nascimento. do Nascimento dribbles up the middle of the pitch and knocks it to Romarinho just before da Souza can tackle him. Romarinho plays the ball through to Taffarel who is clear on goal and shoots, but Silo is able to stop the ball and hold it.

19:39
Dristi passes to St. John. St. John knocks it to Apel. Apel dribbles forward, beyond Winterink and attempts to get past Cruijf, by he is tripped by the Dutchman. The referee gives a foul and awards the first yellow card of the match.

19:55
YELLOW CARD
10 - Simon CRUIJF

25:08
Silo makes a long clearance. Da Souza heads the loose ball onto St. John who quickly passes it wide to Apel. Apel dribbles the ball past Cruijf, but before reaching Fuller, passes to Sinh Cung who sprints into the box and shoots but the ball deflects off Binot and Germany sends the deflection over the bar.

29:37
Snijer centres the ball to do Nascimento, whose long pass finds Taffarel on the edge of the box. Taffarel is unable to get past the SAS defenders, so passes to Winterink who knocks it back to Cruijf. Cruijf hesitates and is almost tackled by Apel, but is instead able to curl in a cross onto the head of Taffarel, but Silo easily catches the ball.

34:58
Fuller passes to Snijer, who runs forward, nutmegs Dristi and continues on his run before knocking square to do Nascimento who plays to Winterink on the wing. Winterink dribbles beyond McCluskey and crosses in. Silo gets a glove to it and punches the ball out, but do Nascimento collects the loose ball and passes to Taffarel, who shoots - straight past Silo and into the net! The Dutch Republic are right back into this with that!

35:29
GOAL
9 - Paulo TAFFAREL

39:21
Germany passes wide to McCluskey. McCluskey dribbles forward and passes onto St. John who himself dribbles forward and performs a one-two with Dristi to round do Nascimento. St. John continues his run forward and chips the defender to find Leigen in the box who shoots into the back of the net, but the celebrations are short lived as the linesman has his flag up. The replays confirm Leigen was slightly offside. This is a bitter sting, especially as the striker is still yet to score at the World Cup.

43:49
Viera squares the ball to de Boer, who passes to do Nascimento. Do Nascimento makes a long ball that finds Romarinho who dribbles wide, pauses for a moment to allow his teammates to enter the box before sending in a cross. Taffarel launches a rocket of a volley straight at Silo, who is able to parry it and da Souza is able to clear the ball.

45:00 + 0:01
The fourth official signals 2 minutes of stoppage time will be played.

45:00 + 2:04
The referee blows the half-time whistle with the score 1-1.

46:18
Dristi tackles Snijer and squares the ball to St. John. St. John advances forward and passes to Germany who takes three touches before playing it to Leigen inside the box. Leigen has to take a few touches to control the ball and move into a better position, but ultimately shoots over the crossbar and into the stands.

49:43
SUBSTITUTION
OFF: 9 - Carl LEIGEN
ON: 91 - Viriato DA CRUZ

54:18
Andersson passes to Nejat. Nejat dribbles up and passes to Sinh Cung, who knocks it straight back to St. John. St. John picks out Germany on the opposite wing with a long pass and Germany crosses the ball in, but da Cruz was caught off-guard and was only able to make a weak header that Fuller was easily able to clear.

59:34
Nejat plays a long ball to Dristi on the opposite wing. Dristi gets past Snijer and passes onto Germany who attempts a cross, but Viera gets a foot to it and sends the ball out for a corner kick. Dristi lines up and takes the kick deep into the box, but it's Binot's head that finds the ball and directs it into his own net! And while the SAS players celebrate with Nejat who they believe headed it in, the real goalscorer is lying on the ground, wishing it would open up and swallow him whole.

60:06
OWN GOAL
18 - Christian BINOT

64:14
De Boer passes to do Nascimento, but Germany intercepts the pass and quickly knocks it to da Cruz. da Cruz easily gets past Binot and plays a through ball to find Sinh Cung, who takes a couple of touches to move towards the centre of the box before launching a shot that Lehmann is just able to push against the post and out, with de Boer clearing the rebound for a throw in.

Orsel dribbles straight through the SAS defence and makes a grounded cross to Taffarel, who shoots the ball off the post. Cruijf collects the loose ball and sends a curling ball back into the box, but Silo beats out Orsel in the air and claims the ball for himself.

76:36
McCluskey passes back to da Souza who forwards the ball to Andersson. Andersson passes to Nejat who dribbles a short distance before passing to St. John in the centre. St. John continues the run forward, dribbling free in the middle of the pitch before picking out a pass to da Cruz who threads the needle between Fuller and de Boer to get into the box and attempts to chip Lehmann, but ultimately puts the ball on top of the goal.

80:29
Wever attempts to dribble around Gaël Germany, but the SAS player takes the ball from his feet and passes forward to St. John, who runs forward with it, rounding do Nascimento before passing to da Cruz. da Cruz is pushed wide by de Boer and Fuller moves in from the wing to try and pincer him, but da Cruz backheels the ball to Sinh Cung who sends it straight into the top corner of the goal. 3-1 and with less than ten minutes on the clock, the Dutch Republic's fate is all but sealed!

Wever knocks it to Orsel who enters the box and tries to shoot, but it deflects off Germany and falls to Taffarel, whose shot is parried by Silo and Snuivert sends the rebound wide of the mark and finally out of touch. The Dutch will be lucky to get another chance like that, let alone two in the dying moments.

90:00 + 4:11
The referee blows the full time whistle. A comfortable victory for the SAS in the end who progress to face the GLR in the quarter-finals, but it's the end of the line for the Dutch Republic who now face the rather short journey home. The final score: SAS 3 - 1 Dutch Republic.

West Germany vs Rhodesia
West Germany 1 (5)
Rhodesia 1 (4)

A boring and inactive match yesterday really picked up in extra-time. Both teams parked the bus, with chances fee and far between. Notably, Germany's striker, Sandro Wagner, missed a great chance in the 32nd minute. Rhodesia's Ryan Harper also had a great chance, but it was a boring game until the 90th minute. 6 minutes after extra-time began, Sami Khedira scored what could be described as the goal of the tournament from 27 yards. Things seemed hopeless for the Rhodesians until Mats Hummels made a careless foul in stoppage time. Sam Lusinga then scored a well-placed free kick. The penalties were tense and nerve wracking, but after an astounding eight penalties were taken, Kevin Trapp saved a kick from Wesley Masenda before Julian Kimmich sent West Germany into the Quarter-Finals of their own world cup.

New Holland vs Brittany
THE CAVALIERS TAKE ON THE SOUTHERN DUTCHMEN

The World Cup Second Round continued today, as the Grand-Duchy of Brittany, Normandy and Cornwall went head to head with the Nouvelle-Hollande.

Before the match, both teams were confident that they could make it through to the semi-finals, with Brittany as slight favourites due to their first place finish in the group stage. New Holland, who were second in a group that contained the hosts, were nonetheless confident, pointing to their surprise 4:2 win over Nigeria as evidence of their calibre.

Pre-Match Odds:

New Holland: 6:1 Draw: 4:1 (favourite) Brittany: 5:1

New Holland 0 : 0 Brittany
(2) (3)

On a stormy night in Cologne, Brittany and New Holland fought to the bitter end in a match that was full of grit and fight.

The match started slowly, with New Holland manager Thierry Blanc starting off with a defensive line-up. He seemed to be looking to close out the match and hit Brittany on the break - something that Farsya had done well in their 2-1 victory over the same opposition.

Meanwhile, Kaourantain Riou had decided to control the match and limit opportunities for New Holland to attack, with Goulven Rannou making way for Judikael Lagadec in the starting line-up to bring in an extra midfielder.

In short, the teams were perfectly balanced to cancel each other out - and that's exactly what happened.

The first half was a fascinating affair, with each team working to deny the other possession of the ball for long periods. In this, Brittany were largely successful, buy New Holland did well to disrupt their rhythm and prevent Arzhur Seznec, the talismanic Breton playmaker, from getting too much of the ball.

After 20 minutes, the first real chance dropped at the feet of Poisson, completely unexpectedly, after a poor cross from his New-Dutch teammate Beauchamp somehow evaded everyone and dropped at his feet inside the six-yard box. Unfortunately, he was as just as surprised as the rest of us and couldn't take the chance, instead finding the chest of Alan Poder.

After this brief opportunity, the match settled down again into the rhythm of the first half, and the match was goalless at half-time.

After the restart, the match began to get a bit more fiery. Gweltaz Kerouac was lucky to escape with just a booking after a ferocious challenge, and when Rollande responded with some angry words he was shown a yellow as well.

Just as it was looking like the match would end with fewer than 22 players on the pitch, a lightning ball from Seznec found Alain Tibaut on the edge of the box. Spinning, he played a neat pass through to Le Fol, who poked the ball past the helpless Mallet to score! Brittany had the lead!

Or so everyone thought - but not the Video Assistant Referee, who recommended the on-field referee check for an offside. To the dismay of the Breton supporters, the goal was disallowed.

After coming so close, the Bretons seemed to lose their will to try again. Instead, it was New Holland who came forward, building quite a few attacks with Pinot and Joubert acting as playmakers. Poisson's cross was headed over the bar by Ellisonde, who had another chance a few minutes later when Peraud cleared the ball out of his box - straight to the veteran striker, who had a great chance on the counter. However, under the pressure of Yannick Toulhoat, the captain could only place the shot wide.

With that, the attacking spirit seemed to leave the match, and both teams reverted to their starting mentalities until the end of normal time.

Extra time

In the additional half-hour, both teams retreated still further backwards, eager to keep the ball and taking no risks. Brittany were coming out on top, and despite the defensive play the two Breton forwards got a few half-chances - but nothing more.

After half-time in extra time, the teams looked absolutely exhausted, having played a tiring method of football for 105 minutes. The second half of extra time was a Breton masterclass in retaining possession, but no attacks came forward from either side.

The match was going to penalties.

Penalty Shoot-Out

1.) Up to take first was les Bleus. Up stepped captain Ellisonde to take first - and, despite Alan Poder's best attempts, struck his penalty beyond the Breton 'keeper into the right-hand corner. 1:0

2.) Next was the Breton striker Laurent Le Fol. He looked dead on his feet, and his penalty was a tired effort. Diving to his left, Mallet saved! Advantage retained for New Holland. 1:0 (miss)

3.) The New Dutch number ten, Olivier Pinot, was next. Without hesitation, he smashed his penalty into the top corner of the left side of the goal. 2:0

4.) At this perilous moment, the Breton captain Arzhur Seznec strolled up to take. He looked calm, even jovial, as he looked the goalie straight in the eye - and rolled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. 2:1

5.) After this confident display, substitute Alexis Besson - who had replaced Rollande - stepped up to try and give New Holland a two-goal lead once more. He took a long run-up.. and smashed the ball into the crossbar! 2:1 (miss)

6.) Guénolé Créac'h, who had had a good game for Brittany, was the going to be the one to try and level the score in the penalty shoot-out. He ran up - and knocked the ball into the centre of the goal. 2:2

7.) Benoit Coquard took the fourth penalty for New Holland. As Thierry Blanc buried his head in his arms, the New Dutch defender ran up to the ball. His shot was low, towards the left-hand corner - and straight into the arms of Alan Poder! 2:2 (miss)

8.) Now here's something you don't see everyday! The Breton goalkeeper, Alan Poder, took the next penalty. He attacked the ball with real venom, and it flew into the roof of the net. 2:3

9.) The pressure was really on for Matty Beauchamp now - he had to score in order to keep New Holland in the match. Looking nervous, he put the ball on the spot, turned away and began his run-up. He drove the ball into the side of the right-hand post. It was headed back in again, but Alan Poder, who had originally dived the other way, recovered and clawed the ball back out! VAR confirmed - he had saved it! 2:3 (miss)

Referee: Kamil Ziółkowski (Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth): Grade C+:
The match was easy to official, and, with the help of the VAR, the referee made no mistakes. It was controversial not to book Jonas Svensson (73').

Both teams nominally fielded their best elevens. On the side of the Rayquaza, both Sato brothers played from the beginning and Junpei Onishi was replaced by a presumably more robust and physical Ri-Jae Suk. Regarding Norway, Tore Reginiussen, who had injured himself in the match against Sierra Madre (Disgrace of Gelsenkirchen), was replaced by Ole Selnæs.

Initially, none of the teams really went offensive, but Greater Norway seemed somewhat more able to endanger the goal. And it was Norway's players who provoked the first intervention of a goalkeeper: Sigþorsson's shot from just outside of the penalty area proved quite dangerous, even was deflected by Ri-Jae Suk, but Miyagi picked it up (14').

And the next dangerous scene was even more unfortunate: Birkir Bjarnason had brought in a free kick, but it landed beyond the touchline as Akimasa Yamashita kicked it out. And thus, Aron Gunnarson got a throw-in on the right side. He threw it onto the penalty spot where Kolbeinn Sigþorsson waited! And Sigþorsson shot, but the shot only hit the inside of the post (22')!
And from there, Katsuya Fujiwara heroically brought the ball forward. As both Fujiwara and the passee, Zenzo Maeda, were in their own half, it could not be offside. And Norway grossly neglected their rest-defence! Only Jonas Svensson was securing. As it was no offside either, Zenzo Maeda was free and alone to run through! Håvard Nordtveidt did come to assist, but it was too late and Zenzo Maeda, after a lovely solo run over more than fifty metres, had no problem to score against Ørjan Nyland! 1 - 0 Maeda (24')!

Now, Hoenn naturally had the advantage. No longer did Hoenn mount attacks only on the counter. To the contrary, now the Rayquaza wanted to up the ante! Several dangerous scenes in front of Ørjan Nyland occurred: Hamada's shot was saved by Nyland (30', 40'), Ochi hit the outside of the post with a cross-shot (38') and the same player brought in a corner and Ri-Jae Suk just headed the ball wide (41'). No further goal was scored before half-time.

During half-time, the Norwegians brought the more offensive Iver Fossum for a defensive midfielder, for Stefan Johansen. But this move proved detrimental instead of helpful. Now, the rest-defence was even worse. Fujiwara passed the ball easily onto Haruo Sato, he onto his brother Naoki, further out to Ochi, and the attempt at a lovely ball into the penalty area was blocked for a corner by Kolbeinn Sigþorsson!
The corner is brought in by Zenzo Maeda, onto the head of Umanosuke Hamada! And goal! 2 - 0 Hamada (48')!

And while Norway was still under shock, the Rayquazas wanted to raise the score higher. And indeed they did, albeit not quite as soon as expected. Instead, Alexander Sørloth had already been substituted.
Ole Selnæs fouled Shuhei Sakamoto upon his attempt to pass the ball to the left onto free Umanosuke Hamada. This, naturally, resulted in a direct free kick from a central position. Pundits claimed the position was "too central" and/or "too close to the penalty area", but not for Fujio Ochi! Fujio Ochi directly put the ball into the left centre of the goal, over the wall and unsaveable for Nyland! 3-0 Ochi (67')!

And then, Norway was really demoralised. Attempts at an attack were stymied relatively soon by Hoenn's defenders, and if not them, by their midfield. Of course, Norway tried to bring more offensive power in, but this proved to be even more detrimental. Nevertheless, in the last nearly half an hour, Norway did not concede another goal - which is in no small part attributable to Nyland. The goalkeeper saved shots of Hamada (73', 79', 80'), Ochi (84'), Arinaga Kai (77') and a direct free kick by Fujio Ochi (89'). On the other side, Miyagi did not get to save a single ball anymore since the third goal for the Rayquazas.

And thus, Hoenn is among the best eight teams in the world! And now up against either Canton or Asturias!

@Capibara , I don't know if you have, but in the goalscorers' list, you should distinguish between the two players with the surname "Germany" and the surname "Sato". I don't know if there are other player pairs with the same surname.

Asturias vs Canton
Asturias 2-2 Canton (3-2 penalties)
A great performance by Thunder can’t prevent the defeat of Canton against Asturias in penalty shootouts

In a fresh night summer night in Magdeburg, the teamwork of the small Iberic country managed to impose itself over the talent of the Cantonese players and book a ticket to the quarterfinals. The Asian team came out from minute one with a desire to score as soon as possible. Spearhead by the Thunder, danger was soon knocking on Asturias’ door. The first opportunity from canton came at the 11th minute when Yingzhi sent a deep cross which was headed by Thunder, leaving Talbot-Zhang alone against the goalkeeper. His shot, however, crashed against the bar.

The Asturians weren’t to keen on attacking, focusing on defending, which was working quite well until Thunder broke their line and scored at the 24th minute with a powerful shot to the top left corner. Realizing they had to win, the Asturians started attacking, which caused the second Cantonese goal at the 44th minute, which fell after the ball was sent back in a corner kick, grabbed by Thunder, who had remained outside of the box, and taken all the way to the other side of the pitch, where keeper Álvarez couldn’t do much.

For the second half, the Asian side kept attacking, with the Asturians still on the defense, despite their two goal deficit. The first Asturian goal didn’t fall until the 75th minutes, when Bienvenida took the ball outside the Cantonese box and scored with a precious volley. The tie came 5 minutes later, when the Bears, emboldened by their recent goal, connected a string of well place passes, leaving Dávalos alone, only to push the ball into the goal. For the extra times, both teams were wasted and didn’t do much.

And thus it was time for an always exciting penalty shootout. After winning the coin toss, the Cantonese chose to go first. And just as during regular time, the Cantonese started scoring their first two penalty kicks, while the Asturians didn’t manage to score in the first two occasions. Things when the other way around for the remaining ones and Asturias manage to advance to quarterfinals.

USGA vs PNC
THE UNION AGAINST THE FEDERATION

The Unites States of Greater Austria and the Pan-Nordic Confederation will go head-to-head later today in the last of round-of-16 matches.

The Pan-Nordic Confederation are not expected to be favourites, as the pedigree they are up against is obvious. The likes of Luka Modrić, Ivan Rakitić, Edin Džeko and Peter Čzech are favoured to win this encounter, although the PNC can point to the likes of Emil Andersson and Ivar Karlsen to give them a chance of a surprise victory in this match.

Odds:

USGA -

USGA 2 : 0 PNC

On a windy and wet night, it was the favourites who emerged with their place in the quarter-finals - thanks to the poacher's instinct of Edin Džeko and the playmaker talents of Luka Modrić.

The USGA have looked like one of the best teams in the competition so far, coming through unbeaten from their group, and they didn't disappoint here in the opening minutes. In contrast to the PNC, who looked slightly lacklustre, they were attacking right from the off. David Alaba was especially lively in the opening minutes, playing balls forward that even Luka Modrić would have been proud of. Although Ivarsson and co were steady in the opening minutes, it looked like being a rather one-sided game from the off.

However, the northern grit that the players were imbued with began to assert itself. Theo Edgren proved a willing marker against the USGA's main creative talents, and Stojan Donarski seemed to able to run all day in chase of the long balls that the USGA had to resort to. Indeed, as the twenty minute mark approached, the game seemed more even than ever.

However, Ruttensteiner's tactical nous was starting to tell. His 4-5-1 formation guaranteed his team a lot of possession compared to the PNC's 4-3-3, and the PNC were starting to be swamped in midfield. Taking advantage of the time afforded in possession, Modrić, Pjanić and Rakitić were combining well. Baumgartlinger and Alaba, who were sitting deeper, did a good job of providing a shield against the PNC's counter-attacks, and the USGA was looking very confident indeed.

That said, they often wasted attacks once they had been created. More than once had Džeko had a goal-scoring opportunity, only to find the gloves of Mouritsen with his headers. The PNC were looking good when they got forward, with Bergh's movement causing the ageing Škrtel some problems.

At half-time, the game was still 0-0, and delightfully poised for the second half.

When we got underway again, it was the PNC who came out strongest. The manager had clearly inspired his men at half-time, and they looked a lot sharper. Ivar Karlsen saw a powerful long-range effort palmed over the bar, and Steffen Straube got numerous chances with his head that he couldn't convert.

Although the USGA seemed to be on the back foot, you can never count them out. After 61 minutes, a wonderful pass from Luka Modrić found Rakitić on the wing, who crossed the ball into the box. Too high for Džeko, it fell to Pjanić at the back post. He played the ball back into the box, and Džeko tapped the ball home. 1-0 to the USGA!

It would be expected that this goal would have rejuvenated the PNC, but apparently not. Although some players clearly raised their game (notably Reppo, Edgren and the substitute Ljunberg), the fight went out of others. Far from being viciously attacked, the USGA found themselves enjoying longer spells of possession, and they began to push forward looking to double their lead.

After twenty minutes of football, they found their second goal. Once again, it was Modrić who started things, knocking a long pass forward for Ádám Nagy. He dribbled with the ball, before launching a cross that was met by the head of Edin Džeko. The Golden Boot candidate wasn't going to miss, and the USGA had sealed their win, a last-minute PNC effort that rebounded off the post notwithstanding.

All in all, it was a thoroughly professional performance from the USGA, and one that they will be justifiably pleased with. Although they overcame the PNC fairly easily, at times it looked like the northerners were on course to score.

The PNC will probably be disappointed at their early exit, having aimed for the quarter-finals at least before the tournament. They had a good squad who will find it hard to ignore what might have been, but they look like they good make real progress between now and the European Championships in two years time.

For now though, the day belongs to the USGA, who will now be devoting all thought to their difficult quarter-final against
