@Capibara - Wait, doesn't the "Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches" mean that Tamazgha (with two goals scored against) would be dead last compared to the Philippines (with one goal against)

I mean here's the actual Group D standings IRL (showing the difference between Argentina and Iceland):

As I understand it, goal difference is the first criterion for a tiebreaker, in which Tamazgha and the Philippines are tied at -1, while the second one is number of goals scored (not goals against), of which Tamazgha has one, whereas the Philippines don't have any, which is the reason why they're on the last spot of the group for now.

Excellent refereeing in a fair match, all notable decisions correct.

Both coaches tried to go for a somewhat more offensive variant: Ruttsteiner brought the more attacking Kolašinac instead of Dragović, while Yves Vanderhaeghe preferred Dendoncker over Hannes Va Der Brughn.

The game started pretty uninspiring and defensive. Chances and corners were there, even were frequent, but both defence lines defended valiantly. Play swayed from the one to the other penalty areas, and Džeko, Pjanic et al. had just as many chances as Lukaku et al.
The most dangerous situation probably occurred when Dzeko, after a mistake by Leander Dendoncker, was free and alone, but Saamy Bossut - formerly thought to be one of Flanders' weaknesses as Koen Casteels is injured - excellently saved (28')! The resulting corner was harmless and safely cleared by Yann Vertonghn. But a Pjanić free kick (10'), a shot from the distance by Kolašinac (34') and, on the other side, a header by Lukaku after a corner (42') were dangerous too, and both goalkeepers had an opportunity to show the best of their abilities.

And thus, it was 0-0 at half time. But it was one of the good goalless draws and the second half promised to be just as eventful as the first one. But this was not the case for the first fifteen minutes - passing and forward play became flawed, bad passes were on the rise,...
Until Jelle Va Damme fouled Šime Vrsaljko on the right wing, in the midst of the Austrian half. At first, Luka Modrić seemed to have wasted the chance shooting into the wall, but the referee Ikechuku Adegbo had paid attention! Lukaku had fouled Škrtel in a centre-right position, giving Austria another free kick, this time in an ideal position: 26 m in front of the goal, centre-right position. And Miralem Pjanić circled it to the right of the wall and into the goal, without Bossut even having a chance to save it! Lovely goal - 1-0 USGA (62')!

Vanderhaeghe reacted and brought some more offensive power into the game with Benteke for central midfielder Dejaegere. Flanders did become better, and another corner (deflected by Prödl, 67') and a well-positioned free kick (de Bruyne, 70') were saved. On the other side, Bossut had to intervene against first Modrić and then Dzeko (74'). Austria brought in Szalai (73') in the hopes of increasing the lead themselves.
But then, David Alaba lost the ball to Stijn de Smet, who excellently crossed into the penalty area. Romelu Lukaku excellently took the ball with his right foot and immediately shot - GOAL! No chance for Čech! 1-1 (77')!

Both teams valiantly tried to score another goal in the last 13 minutes plus injury time, but - possibly also due to lack of energy - nobody managed. Nevertheless, the game always remained on the offensive and spectacular, and the goalkeepers of both sides had to intervene several more times, notably Bossut against Pjanić (83') - who was substituted out for Kovačić just after - and Džeko (88') and Čech against Benteke (90').

A point for both, though a just result and still a point, secures none of the two teams yet. The last matchday, on which Flanders has to play against Anatolia, while the USGA will face the Oceanic Imperium, will be decisive!

Anatolia vs Oceanic Imperium
Holy Newcastle Herald
Anatolia keep knock-out dream alive as they beat the Oceanic Imperium 2-0 in Braunschweig

Goals from FC Crotone's Emre Akbaba and AIK Stockholm's Okay Yokuşlu sealed an important win for the Red and Green, who's confident win means they can still qualify with a win against Flanders in their next game.

The first 10 minutes proved the best for the Oceanics, with Volkan Babacan forced to make a series of important saved, but soon Anatolia took charge and began to control the tempo of the match. Wingbacks Mehmet Topal and Kaan Ayhan dictated play on the wings, preventing OI from playing wide and allowing Anatolia to unleash there own crosses, leading to Anatolia's first goal in the 29th minute as Akbaba met Topal's cross, heading the ball to the side post as it richocheted in. Anatolia continued to press the Oceanics, who's numerous slip-ups unnecessarily lost them possession.

A second goal came soon into the second half as a shot from Umut Bulut hit an Oceanic defender, only to come into the path of Ayhan who stuck the ball into the top corner with his first touch in the 52nd minute. Anatolia were unlucky not to increase their lead anymore, with two shots from Bulut and another from Cenk Tosun hit the posts.

The loss means Oceanic Imperium are mathematically unable to qualify for the second round and play for honour in their final match against USGA, hoping for their first point in a World Cup, while Anatolia need to beat Flanders in their final match.

Goals: Akbaba, Yokuslu

Peru-Bolivia vs Korea
Perú-Bolivia 2-1 Korea

The South American side managed to get a very important victory after their dismaying loss against the Pan-Nordic Confederation last week, while the White Tigers drop to the bottom of the group with only 1 point after two matches played.

Both teams came out to the pitch looking for a victory that would better the chances to advance to the second round. If anyone thought Korea would play defensively, he was mistaken, as the East Asians attacked just as much as Perú-Bolivia. Yeong and Han proved to be a headache for the Altiplanicos all the first half, with the Korean goal falling at the 35th minute, when Ryeo stole the ball from Benavente near their own side of the pitch, sending a long pass to Yeon who then passed Han: the striker feinted to brushed aside the defense and then shot low to the far post, leaving Gallese with no chance.

The second half was utterly Peruvian-Bolivian, as the player knew a defeat would almost mean elimination, with coach Mendoza sending Miranda to the pitch to reinforce the attack, while the midfields started pressing the Korean side right from the moment the goalie got the ball. The tying goal came from a corner kick at the 62th minute with Ramos heading from near the second post.

After several unsuccessful attacks and a couple of saves from goalie Guk, the second goal came at 82th minute from another header, this time from Guerrero, on a cross from Farfán, sealing the Perú-Bolivia victory.

Korea will now have to defeat the PNC in the last match of the round to have some hope of advancing to the second round, while Perú-Bolivia’s chances just got better with this win.

Perú-Bolivia: Gallese, Rodríguez, Ramos (Miranda, 46), Bejarano, Sagredo, Tapia, Flores (Aquino, 67), Benavente, Carrillo, Guerrero, Farfán (Da Silva, 88)

Korea: Guk, Choi (Eun, 35), Park, Lee, Seung, Bak, Jeon, Ryeo (Park, 55), Kim, Yeong (Gwon, 70), Han

Yellow cards:
Perú-Bolivia:
Gallese, 90

Korea:

21 June:- Match Verdict:- Nigeria V New Holland

If this match proves anything, it's Blanc's ability for comebacks. At half-time, New Holland seemned in danger. With the score 2-1, another loss loomned on the horizon. More scrappy play, this time from Bardet, had just cost them another penalty. Yet whilst the pundits probably wrote them off, Blanc was probably giving a rousing speech in the changing room. He'd been here before- remember the away qualifier against New Australasia and the Oceania Cup semi-final against Tasmania- and he was going to turn things around.

Yet the team were slow to let on the new tactics. I was taken very off guard by the Beauchamp goal- I was just checking my notes and then suddenly the New Holland crowd just roared. Now the game was on. Suddenly, winning was somewhat likely. There were some more attempts by the strikers, but each one was thwarted by the strong Nigerian defence. That was, until Poisson's second goal, which seemned to just drift around the defence and slide effortlessly into the goal.

And then for the cherry on top, came Rollande's excellent header. The Southern Dutchmen ended the game a different, more confident team now finally redeemed from their 2002 disaster with second round qualification now in their sights. Although still in third, they just need to beat Levantine on the 25 June to change that.

25 June:- Match Verdict:- New Holland V Levantine

The Southern Dutchmen return to Stuttgart tonight for their third and final group game against Levantine. Another first in this year's World Cup, the Levantine are usually an average team at the world level but have performed poorly this year, having lost to both West Germany and Nigeria. They are now very unlikely to
qualify, but they could still deny New Holland's own chances.

The best case scenario for New Holland is to at least draw against Levantine and for West Germany to beat Nigeria, which will see them into second place and through to the round of 16. Given New Holland's resurgent second half against Nigeria and the poor year Levantine are having, I'd say this is more likely than not, even if knockout qualification is dependent on the other match. However the Southern Dutchmen cannot afford to be complacent, as Levantine could still surprise.

We're here in Dortmund for tonight's game between Aragon and the GLR. My name is Cuthbert Chin and joining me on the desk are Zhao Lee and Gao Ruyin. This could prove to be a very decisive game tonight, with the impressive looking GLR team capable of qualifying for the Round of 16 if they can beat the favoured Aragon, who themselves will see victory as an imperative following Hoenn's victory over Atlantica earlier today as the seeded team could find themselves languishing on the verge of elimination if this match doesn't go their way. Zhao, how do you feel their chances are tonight?

I felt they looked pretty comfortable against Hoenn and that the final scoreline wasn't really what they deserved - if they've put that disappointment behind them, there's no reason they can't get three points here. That said, they're going to be missing Marco Verratti due to his suspension and Sergi Roberto's fitness is still questionable, so this won't be an easy ride for Aragon and Pep Guardiola clearly wasn't happy with something from the Hoenn game because he's reverted back to a 4-4-2. Even still, the attacking combination of Immobile and Zaza is a force to be reckoned with and they have a lot of power in the midfield to support them with so expect to see goals from this Aragon side. Despite a couple of mistakes against Hoenn, their defence is usually quite strong, so I think Aragon will be right to expect a win here.

Trying to stop them will be a GLR team that established themselves strongly against Atlantica and a win either tonight or against Hoenn will be sufficient for the Lucky 11 to reach the Round of 16. Gao, is this just luck or are they really capable of bringing the fight to the likes of Aragon?

This GLR team is still a little rough around the edges, but they certainly have the potential to worry Aragon tonight. Christian Pulisic has shown himself to be a force in front of goal against Atlantica and they've shown themselves able to control play in the midfield. The defenders were untested against Atlantica and will definitely be up against a much harder challenge from the Aragon offence so it remains to be seen whether they can handle it, but notably manager Mauricio Pochettino has decided to field the exact same eleven, so clearly he saw no problems in the Atlantica match. That said, Aragon are still the favourites for this match, so the GLR will take any points they can get from tonight.

19:52
The players are about to come onto the pitch, so it's time to make the final predictions.

2-0 Aragon

I think GLR will run them a bit closer, but Aragon will still come on top 2-1.

So it's unanimous in the studio, but the match will be won and lost on the pitch. It's time to join Steven Sanderson and Mike Wong who will provide commentary for this match.

19:57
Aragon win the coin toss and will kick off.

00:00
Zaza kicks off to Immobile.

03:11
Busquets knocks the ball wide to Nocerino who advances forwards down the wing. Nocerino passes forward onto Zaza, but the ball is intercepted by Brooks who passes wide to Ream. Ream plays it long to Kitchen who is able to dribble past Fabregas and Busquets without much challenge, before making a long through ball to an onside Robbie Brady. Brady continues the charge down the wing and is able to get a cross in, but slightly overhits it and it sails over the head of Sargeant and straight to Ignazio Abate who quickly clears upfield. An early opportunity for the GLR wasted, but their counterattacking style asked serious questions of the Aragon defence.

08:46
Bartra plays forwards to Busquets. Busquets quickly knocks it forwards to Fabregas. Fabregas knocks it between the legs of Morales and dribbles further, before passing it to Zaza, who would much rather shoot than take on the GLR defence, but the resulting effort sails well over the crossbar. Not the best effort from the striker.

13:38
Having spent a couple of minutes knocking the ball around, Aragon begin another attack with a well placed long ball from Piqué finding Fabregas, who quickly forwards it onto Asensio. Asensio passes to Immobile, who immediately passes back with a through ball that leaves him open, but a last gasp sliding challenge from John Brooks slices the ball from his feet and to Lichaj who quickly clears. The Aragon players protest for a penalty, but nothing is given.

17:12
Brady is dispossessed by Busquets who dribbles forwards into the GLR's half. Busquets makes a long ball to Asensio who quickly finds himself fenced in by the GLR defence, but is able to work a through ball to Ciro Immobile who can get a shot off, which Guzan is able to push wide for a corner.

18:01
Fabregas plays the corner deep into the box and onto the head of Jordi Alba, who sends the ball straight into the hands of Guzan. Guzan quickly throws it far to Shipp, who runs forward before making a long ball to Pulisic, but makes it too long and Donnarumma gets there just before and clears the ball away.

22:43
Piqué plays it wide to Abate, who dribbles down the wing before knocking it onto Nocerino, who collects the ball and moves towards the middle of the pitch but is quickly brought down by a sliding challenge from Morales, who misses the ball in the process. The referee is taking a dim view of that challenge.

23:09
YELLOW CARD
11 - Alfredo MORALES

28:57
Two quick passes from Lichaj to Trapp and onto Shipp allows the midfielder an open run down the wing before Abate finally provides an obstacle. Shipp crosses to Pulisic who takes three touches to get into the box and shoots - straight into the gloves of Gianluigi Donnarumma who was not at all challenged by the shot.

33:29
Lichaj intercepts a loose ball intended for Asensio and knocks it forwards to Trapp. Trapp controls it and holds it for a few seconds before passing along to Kitchen. Kitchen dribbles forwards and passes to Morales who continues the run before connecting a beautiful chip over the Aragonese defence and to the feet of Pulisic, who half-volleys the ball, sending it thundering against the crossbar and back out, with Bartra heading the rebound wide to Alba, who clears the ball forwards.

38:45
Bartra plays a long ball to Fabregas out wide. Fabregas is able to effortlessly get past Trapp and beguns to run, before passing to Asensio in the middle of the pitch. Asensio's attempt at a through ball finds Brooks, whose clearance goes straight to Nocerino, who returns the ball back to Asensio. Asensio then finds Zaza who gets a shot off, only for it to go well wide. This is not the performance in front of goal Zaza needed.

42:32
A long aerial pass from Alba finds Nocerino on the opposite wing. Nocerino gets mugged by Shipp, but Busquets recovers possession and runs forwards and passes to Immobile, who dribbles between Brooks and Ream and shoots, but Guzan is just able to hold it and keep the score level.

45:00 + 0:01
The fourth official signals two minutes of stoppage time is to be played.

45:00 + 1:32
Long throw from Abate finds Nocerino, who easily escapes his marker and advances down the wing. Lichaj tries to squeeze him out, but Nocerino gets past him too and is able to get a cross into the box which finds the foot of Asensio who volleys the ball a few centimetres wide. And Guzan's thumping goal kick provides the cue for the half time whistle. Neither team looks exactly thrilled as they walk into the dressing room, but they at least know it's all to play for in the second half.

45:00
Sargeant kicks off to Pulisic to resume the match.

48:43
Lichaj knocks the ball onto Trapp, who plays it directly onto Morales. Morales pauses for a few seconds, allowing Brady to escape his marker in Fabregas and Morales connects the pass to him. Brady charges forward down the wing only to find himself pinned in by Alba. Brady attempts to dribble around Alba, but Alba slides in and collects Brady while missing the ball. The referee immediately blows his whistle and Alba begins his second half by finding himself booked.

49:18
YELLOW CARD
2 - Jordi ALBA

49:30
Kitchen plays the free kick into the box. Pulisic volleys goalwards, but Donnarumma is able to parry the ball wide for a corner. Lichaj plays the corner short to Shipp who dribbles closer before crossing the ball - Donnarumma fists the ball away, but the referee blows his whistle for Sergio Busquets who had been knocked to the ground after banging heads with Robbie Brady jumping for the cross. Busquets eventually picks himself up and is able to continue.

56:21
Piqué makes a long pass to Nocerino. Nocerino dribbles forwards, but then passed back to Busquets who passes forward to Fabregas. Fabregas slowly makes his way forward before finding a through pass onto Immobile who takes two touches and shoots of the post. Asensio is first to the loose ball, but he can only hammer it wide. On the sidelines, Pep Guardiola is visibly frustrated by the team's efforts and Lorenzo Insigne begins warming up.

62:27
Long ball across wings from Brady finds Shipp. Shipp passes to Trapp in the middle. Trapp dribbles forwards and tries to get past Bartra, but the Aragonese defender knocks the ball from his feet, but it is collected by Pulisic who attempts a one-two with Sargeant, but the return pass is intercepted by Piqué and cleared away.

65:36
Fabregas knocks the ball forward onto Asensio who dribbles forward contemplatively before passing to Insigne. Insigne continues his run forward and uses his fresher legs to break through a gap in the GLR defence and shoot, but Guzan is able to tip the ball away for a corner. Alba curls the ball in and once again it is Insigne that gets the shot off, but it hits the crossbar and bounces out for a goal kick.

71:13
Piqué passes wide to Alba. Alba knocks the ball to Roberto who effortlessly gets past Brady and then Kitchen and continues his long run down the wing and makes a through ball onto Immobile. Immobile is forced wide by Ream and attempts to cross to Insigne, but he can only head it straight into the hands of Guzan. Guzan quickly throws to Lichaj, who passes straight onto Trapp who begins a run of his own before passing to Adams. Adams dribbles past Nocerino and attempts an aerial pass over the defenders to Pulisic, but misjudges the height, allowing Donnarumma to collect the ball from infront of the GLR striker.

76:18
Brady is dispossessed by Roberto, who dribbles towards the centre of the pitch, threading the needle between Trapp and Kitchen before passing to Immobile. Immobile takes a few touches before lifting the ball over the defenders to Insigne who volleys the shot into the net. But while the Aragon players celebrate, the GLR defenders claim offside! VAR is called in and after a tense period of waiting from both teams, the referee calls no goal - Insigne had started his run moments too early!

Abate plays the ball to Nocerino who dribbles past Shipp and passes to Asensio, who knocks the ball back to Roberto on the wing. Roberto once again gets past the flagging Kitchen and plays the ball onto Insigne. Seeing no way past the defenders, Insigne tries to chip the ball over to Quagliarella, who gets his shot off, but Guzan is able to hold it and maintain his clean sheet.

87:21
Nocerino's pass to Roberto is intercepted by Adams, who attempts to play forward to Shipp, but Abate collects the ball back for Aragon. Abate tries to dribble around Shipp, but Shipp sticks his foot out to get the ball, but only gets the player and Abate is tripped. The referee doesn't like the look of the challenge and awards a free kick, while Shipp finds his name in the book.

Patagonia vs PNC
Patagonia 2-1 PNC
Patagonia edges the Pan-Nordic Confederation to take command of Group C

The game saw little emotion from both sides, despite the three goals scored. It almost seemed as neither of the teams wanted to win, even if The Chillas needed a victory after their surprising tie against Korea the previous round. The first goal came at the 29th minute after a foul by Andersson to Pareja, who was about to face the goalkeeper alone. The result: a penalty for Patagonia and a red card for Andersson. Captain Snow netted his second goal of the World Cup after successfully scoring the penalty.

Patagonia sealed the game with a goal from Salamanca at the 83th minute after a long cross from Holmes. Ljunberg still managed to score a goal for the Nordics at the 94th minute, but it was to late to do anything else.

With this victory, Patagonia now leads the group while the PNC remains second. Both need a win to ensure their advance to the next round. In case of a tie or a defeat, they'd have to wait for the result of the other game to know if they will still be alive in this 2018 AHFA World Cup.

Patagonia: Obregón, Cobb, Gutiérrez, Pareja, Leguizamo, Holmes, Barker, Smith (Baxter, 77), Snow, Salamanca, Bentley (Calvert, 65).

PNC: Mouritsen, Andersson, Haglund, Ivarsson, Donarski, Padar (Ojala, 55), Edgren, Reppo, Bergh, Karlsen (Ljunberg, 70), Straube, Priedïts (Brahe, 32).

Tamazgha vs Sierra Madre
Catastrophe at Cologne
The Foxes fall easily against the Might Atlas

Today at Cologne the Sierra Madre National Football Team received a humility lesson from the North African squad, in a game that probably has been the worst performance of the team in several years. After the victory against the Philippines last week, spirits and confidence were high among the players and coach Treviño, who were sure the ticket to the second round would be obtained after this match. However, this wasn't the case and now we'll have to wait until the third round to know if our representative will be among the final 16.

The Sierra Madre lineup didn't change from the last game, with only Mier entering in place of Vidaurri, who felt some discomfort in his leg during a training session 2 days ago. Tamazgha made several modifications after the defeat against Greater Norway, changes that did work, as the outcome demonstrated. This time Baghra joined Saphir and Bashara in the attack, while Fouen entered in place of Khalil, playing between the midfielders and the three strikers. The result: A devilsh attack that overwhelmed the Sierra Madre defense, who didn't know how to counter the attacks and looked as if the Tampico-Santander train had just ran them over. Tamez in particular was left behind several times by Saphir, while Martínez and Garza were often caught out of their positions, which was used by the Tamazghans to exploit the sides.

The first goal precisely fell because of a cross from the right side: Hakin left Garza behind, send the ball to the box and Saphir just headed alone, while Tamez and Alanís were chasing Baghra and Bashara. Still, the first half ended 1-0 after Sada missed a penalty that would've meant the equalizer at the 44th minute, sending the ball way above the bar, probably landing somewhere close to the Cerro de la Silla. The second half saw some modifications, in which Mier was pulled out for Cruz, with the intention of providing support to the defense. The changes didn't work, as the Tamazghan hurricane kept coming and two more goals were scored: one by Saphir at the 55th minute and the nail in the coffin by Selah at the 88th minute.

There is no much to say about the attack of Sierra Madre, as it was practically non-existent during much of the game, aside from that penalty missed by Sada. Some lukewarm approaches were created by Castillo and Flores, but not enough to put in danger Nasrallah's goal.

Today's performance should be seen as a cautionary warning for the whole team as, even though not everything is lost, now they have to win against Greater Norway in the last match of the first round in order to advance to the knockout stage. The Norwegians play against the Philippines later today, with everyone back home hoping for a tie or a win from the Azcals, which would leave the group wide open and the two tickets to the next round up for grabs.

The Foxes will play their next match next Wednesday, June 27th against Greater Norway in Gelsenkirchen at 20:00.

Sierra Madre: Alcorta, Garza, Tamez, Alanís (López, 58), Martínez, García, Cervantes, Castillo, Mier (Cruz, 46), Flores (Torres, 65), Sada.

Tamazgha: Nasrallah, Haddad (Bina, 85), Jeannine, Fouen, Halaby, Selah, Hakin (Chemiaam, 70), Sophaine, Saphir (Saber, 79), Bashara, Baghra.

Yellow cards:

Philippines vs Norway
The Philippines chances of making the next round as had a good boost after they knocked over Greater Norway 3-1 at Gelsenkirchen to put them on three points after two games.

The first goal of the game came from the Philippines with Javier Patino scoring his goal in the top corner which Orjan Nyland wouldn't be able to reach to get the Philippines the early lead after only 13 minutes. That would later be followed by another goal from Patino in the 25th minute and Greater Norway was starting to worry that it might go completely downhill from there.

With the pressure firmly on Greater Norway, they stood up in the defence department and held to their own all the way up to the half-time whistle to be only two goals down at the half-time whistle. Heading into the second half, Norway had the early possession of the ball and it would show with Alexander Søderlund getting the goal. But it would be too little too late as the Philippines would get a third with Arturo Malingenán getting the winning goal for the Philippines as the battle for qualification will continue on to the last day.

Philippines 3
Javier Patino 13' (G), 25' (G)
Arturo Malingenán 55' (G)

Greater Norway 1
Alexander Søderlund 49' (G)

Asturias vs Shannon
THE MARCH OF ASTURIAS CONTINUES

Asturias 2 : 0 Shannon

Match Report

On a drizzly day in Magdeburg, a strong and professional Asturias side were too good for an inexperienced Shannon team who were outplayed throughout the game.

Things started poorly for the Shannon when after just four minutes, when a Real Oviedo textbook move sent four ex-members of their development squad through against three Shannon defenders. Although Erick Fontirroig fluffed his lines, it was a wake up call that the Shannon would fail to heed - to their eventual misfortune.

The Asturias captain, Antonio Lopez, was dominant in the centre of the field, with all of Asturias' attacking energy and defensive stability flowing through him. So when he was injured after a hard challenge by Robbie Brady after 21 minutes gone, it seemed like Asturias would struggle.

However, the young understudy Jose Bienvenida staked his claim to be this year's wonderkid with a fantastic performance. With his first touch of the game, he hit a perfect free-kick that curled in off the underside of the crossbar, with Kieran Westwood in the Shannon goal stranded. After 24 minutes, Asturias were 1-0 up!

Knowing that a loss could be fatal for their hopes of qualification from the group, the Shannon side gave it their all in the rest of the match but were simply too disorganised as a team to break down the disciplined Asturias defence, or to defend against fast-flowing attacks. Although the score at half-time was, on the face of it, encouraging for the Shannon team, the gap in talent and ability was such that it seemed to be only a mater of time.

Indeed, Asturias came out of the break looking to put the game to bed, and came close as Emmanuel Zprtega came close wih a point-blank header, which was somehow saved by Westwood. Juan Alvarez, who had had nothing to do all day in the Asturias goal, was almost caught out by a Shannon break-away but Palacio was there to spare his blushes after Jonathan Walters had rounded the keeper.

With this close escape, the bears seemed galvanised and pushed forward in numbers, with Juan Fernando hitting the post with a close-range shot before Bienvenida once again came up with the goods. A corner was headed away by Sean St. Ledger, but it fell at the feet of the Asturias midfielder, who stuck an unstoppable half-volley through the crowd of bodies into the bottom right corner.

The remaining 9 minutes of the game were a disorganised affair, with Shannon attacks never seriously threatening The Bears' goal.

For the group, this victory has put the Shannon in serious danger of going out, as if the SAS beat their North American rivals New England, the SAS and Asturias will both be through without having played each other. However, with New England needed a win to hope of qualifying, they're sure to put up a ferocious fight. Although the Shannon were never expected to qualify, their plucky showing against the SAS had raised hopes that were not fulfilled in the Magdeburg rain.

Meanwhile, Asturias will be ecstatic at how comfortable their win was - it looked like the victory of a team that could go far in this tournament.
