On June 4th 2011 the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcano, dormant for 51 years and rumbling for months, finally blew its top in a massive explosion, blasting a 5 kilometres wide ash-and-gas plume that rose to an altitude of 10 kilometres above sea level. The plume drifted south at 5 kilometres altitude, and southeast and east at 10 kilometres altitude.
The explosion caused the evacuation of some 4200 people and sent a cloud of volcanic ash up into the atmosphere and on a journey around the world.
