In the West Wing universe, the real presidential election years (2012, 2016, 2020) are the midterm years and the midterms years (2010, 2014, 2018). The most recent presidential election in this fictional timeline was the 2014 election, where incumbent President Glen Allen Walken (John Goodman's character from the TV show) was re-elected to a second term in office.

Fans outraged as Taylor wins " 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" election

Fans of the long-running NBS show "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" took to social media on Sunday evening as the shows ninth series ended with a two hour special, with some segments shown live with the election of Republican Businessman Ronald Taylor as the next President of the United States.

Taylor swept into office with a surprise landslide win in the electoral college (351 to 187) despite losing the popular vote to former First Lady Hannah Dillon by over a million votes.

"The result was frankly nuts, and they clearly took the bit of a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the electoral vote from the real world ten years ago, but just switched it around" said one poster on our Message board. Another said "The results were well done, as well as the live segments, the result was completely over the top though, liked the end though with Taylor's wife Marilyn telling him he had won "yeah I know, god knows how" as he looked into the camera.

The previous scene had shown Hannah Dillon bursting into tears, as NBS called the election for Taylor.

NBS has yet to announce if the show will return for a tenth series.

For those who interested this how the electoral Map looked at the end of the "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" episode "Decision Day" on Sunday. No popular vote totals were given, other than an aid telling Taylor "you're going to lose the popular vote by over a million".

Walken has three man shortlist for Transportation Secretary

NBS understands that President Walken has a three man shortlist for the new Transportation Secretary. Sources within the Department of Transportation has told NBS, that the list is the outgoing Vermont Senator Matt Skinner, the former Democratic Senator from North Carolina Eric Bennett and Ohio Congressman and former gubernatorial candidate Alan Tomlinson.

"All three man are strong candidates for the role, all have pushed for better transportation infrastructure in there various posts in public service, all have served honourably their states", the source added to NBS.

The interesting thing about all three men is that all do appeal across party lines, Senator Skinner was highly respected by former White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry when he served as a Congressman during the Bartlet administration , and is a long term friend of Josh Lyman, Governor Bennett was also always on the right of his party, indeed he endorsed and campaigned with Robert Ritchie in the 2002 Presidential election, whilst Congressman Tomlinson is highly respected in both his state and in the House by Democrats, where he is Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

New Jersey Governor Annie Long declines to seek re-election next year

New Jersey Governor Annie Long has announced today that she will not seek re-election in 2017.

Long said "I have decided not to seek re-election next year, I have enjoyed this job, but it has also put a great strain on my marriage, and the lives of my children".

Long's decision will have opened up the field on both sides. Many Republicans had stepped away from running against Long, but could now get into the race. Former Senator Mike Brace is due to make his intentions clear in the next week or so. Brace who lost for re-election to the Senate in 2012, has been signalling a run for several months, including a meeting with North Carolina Governor David McNamara who won the governorship in similar circumstances in which would Brace would be running in New Jersey. Former Governor Dan Pritchard has said he is "unlikely" to to try and win back the job he lost in 2013. On the Democratic side, the clear front-runner would appear to be Newark Mayor Kelly Hoffman who is an early support of Long's candidancy four years ago. The other name that has been mentioned is the son of former Governor Kate Crossley, Alex. He picked up the reigns of his Mothers failed Presidential campaign three years ago, and is respected by the press, the major problem for him is that he only turns 33 in January, and has never held elected office, although if he did run he would have the advantage of his family name.

Fitzsimmons to declare for Senate Minority Leader on Monday

The office of Massachusetts Senator Jimmy Fitzsimmons has confirmed that he "will make clear his intentions clear on Monday regards to the be the Democrats Leader in the Senate".

It is widely expected that Senator Fitzsimmons will run, and it is also believed that California Senator Sam Seaborn will support him under the agreement that Senator Fitzsimmons will not seek the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2018.

A Democratic party source told NBS "Senator Fitzsimmons is going to run for the Senate Leadership job, and with the deal with Senator Seaborn he is very likely to win". Maryland Senator Cain McClelland is still considering running, but he will unlikely to beat Fitzsimmons.

All change in Democratic Leadership in both Senate and the House

There will be a new look leadership for the Democratic party in both Houses of Congress for the new session.

On Monday as expected Senator Jimmy Fitzsimmons announced that he would be seeking the leadership of the Democrats in the Senate, something helped by decision of Senator Sam Seaborn to support him and then a few minutes after Fitzsimmons had announced his decision , Maryland Senator Cain McClelland decided against standing against Fitzsimmons. Unlike the Republican Senate leadership battle two years ago the Democratic race was over before it started. Vermont's Sarah O'Brien will be Fitzsimmons deputy who was also unchallenged following the defeat of Harry Conroy three weeks ago.

On Tuesday evening Carol Gelsey called a press conference to announce that she would not be seeking re-election as Speaker of the House, instead she said a "protracted race, didn't help anyone" and gave her backing for Congressman Daniel Maddox. That support came as a surprise to her number two, House Majority Leader Noah Gellman, who had always been regarded as Gelsey's "natural successor". Congressman Ronny Reynolds whose dislike for both Gelsey and Gellman is well known said he "was undecided yet about challenging Maddox or Gellman".

Domain names bought up for forthcoming Seaborn Presidential campaign as candidates start to get ready for 2018

A sure sign that California Senator Sam Seaborn is preparing his expected 2018 Presidential campaign has come as that appeared that the names "Seaborn2018" and "Seaborn for America" had been registered as domain names for website use.

It follows the deal between Seaborn and the 2014 nominee Senator Fitzsimmons which allowed Fitzsimmons to become the Democratic leader in the Senate, on the agreement he will not run for the Presidency again.

Outgoing Ohio Senator Hayden Straus has another two meetings with former New Jersey Governor Kate Crossley as he attempts to get her support for his expected run, whilst Montana Governor Kurt Carner told a meeting of local journalists in Helena that he was a " honestly and seriously looking at a Presidential bid" adding "we all know that Senator Seaborn will be the favourite, but favourites lose, they have to earn the right to be the nominee". Carner who is term limited in 2018, could be a dark horse, he comes from a strong Republican state come Presidential elections, he is pro-choice, but is also pro-balanced budgets, and pro-tax cuts, something he things would be a "positive in a General Election campaign".

Rev Bennett causes outrage on World Aids day saying "HIV is the price gays pay from god"

The Rev Godfrey Bennett has caused further outrage when at a hustings meeting in Cambridge ahead of next weeks by-election saying "HIV is the price gays pay from god for their lifestyle".

The comments follow earlier statements regards equal marriage as "special rights" and that being gay was a "lifestyle choice".

Asked about HIV ahead World Aids Day he replied "HIV is the price gays pay from god for their lifestyle. God watches this world, and HIV was clearly his chosen punishment for those who make that lifestyle choice. God is not saying it's wrong to love but if you decide to make that decision, then it's simple there will be consequences from god".

All the candidates from the Liberal Democrats, Labour, the Conservatives and Green's attacked him for his comments calling him "homophobic beyond belief" said Conservative Mike Robshaw with Liberal Democrat Elaine Raymond "I cannot add anymore than Councillor Robshaw has". Labour candidate Camomile Ruddle who had already pubically attacked the Rev Bennett for his earlier comments and what she calls his double standards on the treatment of the homeless and the poor launched a bitter attack "This is what the Church of England has come to, the archbishop of Canterbury must disown these disgusting comments, I am frankly appalled by them. I also hope that the next Labour Government can look at the whole issue of the Church of England and the special status it receives. It earns millions but pays no tax as well. Taxes that could pay for hundreds of new homless shelters and hostels, for the people the Rev Bennett seems to care about".

Archbishop of Canterbury refuses to condemn Bennett's HIV remarks

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Gerald Lucy has today released from Lambeth Palace a statement regarding the remarks made the Rev. Godfrey Bennett regarding HIV.

"I do not agree with the comments of Rev Bennett, but his opinions are his own and he is entitled to them. He is running for MP, and the people need to know and understand his positions. Once again the Church of England has not endorsed the Rev Bennett's campaign in Cambridge. It is up to the voters of that fine City to make their decision next Thursday".

The statement prompted swift reaction from Labour Candidate Camomile Ruddle "It is a disgrace that the Church of England's top Bishop has refused to condemn the comments which are vastly offensive to the vast majority of people in Cambridge and indeed the country as a whole. To me the Church is clearly at odds now with the three main political parties in this country, and this attempt to stop "equal marriage" which was voted on by 73% of the British people must end. the Church is clearly abusing it's power".

Public Service Announcement
Yes, we are eight years old today.
I cannot believe what has been achieved. We have done two whole Presidential Election cycles, and two mid-term campaigns as well.
Thanks to all those that have contributed including Disputed, to whom without this thread would have finished years ago.
We are looking forward to our third Presidential election, and the first with both the Republicans and the Democrats fighting Presidential Primary campaigns at the same time.
Again many thanks.
Right what's next.

Skinner & Bennett remove names from Transportation Secretary consideration

The White House has this morning confirmed that both Senator Matt Skinner (Vermont) and former Democratic Senator Eric Bennett (North Carolina) have removed their names in regards to the vacant position of Transportation Secretary.

That now leaves Ohio Congressman Alan Tomlinson as the only candidate left under consideration. Press Secretary Kate Moore said "Both Senators Skinner and Bennett where interviewed for the position, but both have now said that they didn't wish to continue with the process. I understand that Senator Skinner said that now after twenty years in Washington he just wanted to retire back to Vermont, and Senator Bennett said he no wish to return to front-line politics".

Moore added though "The recruitment process continues, Congressman Tomlinson has been interviewed twice, but the President has now asked to see two other new candidates, but I am not at liberty to say who they are at the current time".

Congressman Tomlinson drops out of Transportation running, Former Governor Jack now favourite

Another twist in the administration's attempts to find a new Transportation Secretary as it merged late last night, that Ohio Congressman Alan Tomlinson had followed Matt Skinner and Eric Bennett in dropping out of contention.

Congressman Tomlinson who is understood to be looking at another shot for Ohio Governor in 2018 released a statement stating "that he had been honoured to be considered for the President's Cabinet, but after long thought and discussions with my family, I have decided to stay in Congress, and serve the people that re-elected me last month with over 65% of the vote".

NBS now believes that former Minnesota Governor Michael Jack has been interviewed for the position. Jack who left office in January 2013, has been working in the private sector as a "Freelance Business Consultant" was vetted for the Vice-Presidency back in 2010 and it is believed President Walken holds him in great regard. The White House announced that the process was "on-going".
