Riley & Hunter go on charm offensive towards Independent Senator Roscoe

Senate Minority Leader Cody Riley and Minnesota Senator Jack Hunter are trying to win back Minnesota's other Senator Independent John Roscoe to the Republicans.

Roscoe elected in 2012 as a Republican declared himself a Independent in 2013 after a series of disagreements with the then Republican leadership. He has since voted with the Democrats and the Republicans. With the battle for control of the Senate likely to be very close, Riley and Hunter are trying to get Roscoe back into the Republican fold.

Hunter along with Pennsylvania Senator Carlin Cassidy have held private meetings with Roscoe, and we understand that Riley and his deputy Max Lobell III held a two hour meeting with him on Wednesday.

A Republican party source told NBS "The leadership are doing everything they can to get Roscoe back as a Republican or at least to try and gets agreement to support the Republicans as he is the single official independent Senator and could well hold the balance of power in the Senate".

The charm offence comes as the latest polls show the Republicans likely at the moment to pick up for certain two seats, Iowa and North Carolina, but the bad news is based on the same polls, the Republicans are likely to lose four seats Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, which would leave the Republicans needing to win another six seats to reach 51 seats or five to reach the fifty, hence the moves towards winning back Roscoe.

Safe Republican Holds
  1. Alabama
  2. Alaska
  3. Arkansas
  4. Idaho
  5. Kansas
  6. Kentucky
  7. Louisiana
  8. Michigan
  9. Missouri
  10. Oklahoma
  11. South Dakota
  12. Utah
Likely Republican Gains
  1. Iowa
  2. North Carolina
Safe Democratic Holds
  1. California
  2. Connecticut
  3. Hawaii
  4. Oregon
  5. Washington
Likely Democratic Gains
  1. Maryland
  2. New York
  3. Pennsylvania Open seat
  4. Vermont
Toss-up
  1. Arizona Rep Held Open seat
  2. Colorado Dem Held
  3. Illinois Dem Held Open seat
  4. Indiana Dem Held
  5. Nevada Rep Held Open seat following the nomination of Howard Weston to the SC
  6. New Hampshire Dem Held
  7. North Dakota Dem Held
  8. Ohio Dem Held Open Seat
  9. South Carolina Dem Held
  10. Wisconsin Dem Held
The Republicans currently have 47 Senate seats, the Democrats 52 seats with one Independent Senator Roscoe of Minnesota.
To win back a majority in the Senate the Republicans must reach 50 seats or 51 for a clear majority of one. Thus with the current state of the battleground a gain of two seats gives them 49 seats plus the loss of four seats leaves them with 45 seats thus they need to win five or six seats from the Toss-up states to either tie the Senate with 50 seats or gain single seat control with 51. Basically the Republicans need to win at least half of the seats on the Toss-up list.

Nebraska Governor Moore hints at a Presidential run

Nebraska Governor John Moore, who leaves office next January hinted today that he is looking at a run for the 2018 Republican Presidential nomination.

Moore was campaigning in Omaha with his Lt Governor Ben Lane who is the Republican candidate to replace him in the Governor's Mansion in Lincoln. He told reporters that "it's nice campaigning for someone else, but this could change in a years time". When asked what he meant by this he laughed "your reporters, you work it out".

The 2018 Republican Presidential race according to most experts is likely to have five serious contenders for the nomination, Vice President Elizabeth Clark, Former White House chief of Staff Henry Shallick, Florida Governor James Ritchie (if he wins re-election in November), former North Carolina Governor Andrew Wu and Kansas Governor Peter Gault. Moore if he does run would be regarded as second tier candidate, but he feels he could have a chance.

Crossley throws herself back onto the campaign trail

Former New Jersey Governor Kate Crossley is set to return back to the campaign trail this week. The 2014 Presidential candidate has said in the past few months that she will run again for the nomination again, a nomination that for large parts of 2013 looked almost certain to be hers is returning to the front line as the mid-term battles heat up.

Crossley is to campaign with several high profile Democratic candidates this week. Later on today she will be with Delaware gubernatorial candidate Declan Molloy at a fundraiser, then on Tuesday she will making a joint appearance with New York Senate candidate Congressman Tim Burrell, Wednesday she has events in Pennsylvania with Senate candidate Matt Clausen followed by short trip across the border in Ohio to campaign for Ohio Senate candidate Justin Willis, which will be a joint appearance with Ohio Governor Charlie Tate.

Candidates know that Crossley still does have a massive following in the party and does have a formidable list of big donors hence why many candidates are courting her support. She belives that she could win the nomination in 2018, and although unofficially declared she knows that she has to start early espically as it looks like the big guns of California Senator Sam Seaborn, New York Senator Andrew Thorn ,Connecticut Senator Chris Casey and former Pennsylvania Governor Michael Kellner are all likely to run.

Church Civil War Brewing?

Two more senior figures in the Church of England have spoken out about the Government’s proposed equal marriage referendum, but have taken vastly different sides.

For the first time since the proposal was mooted in the Queen’s Speech a member of the Church has spoken in favour of it. Last week the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Reverend Julian Drake said that it was “high time the Government proposed something like this. Our God is a God of Love and there is no higher expression of love than that of holy matrimony. It should be open to everyone.” When challenged on how this corresponded to the Bible, the Bishop – currently the youngest of the Church of England’s bench of Bishops – said “some parts of the Bible are timeless teachings and some parts are products of their time. This is one of the latter.”

This view was challenged however by the Vicar of St Ebbes Oxford. St Ebbes, a city centre church is attended by many university students and is of the Conservative Evangelical tradition. The Rector Martyn Soames a noted theologian said in his sermon yesterday, “I believe that those Bishops who have spoken out against the Governments plans are quite right to do so. You can love the sinner and still hate the sin, and this is one of those situations. Marriage is between one man and one women as dictated by God and no government is in a position to overrule God. And for the Bishop of Norwich to claim that the Bible contains things that are of their time well that is quite right. Slavery for example is of its time. So is the rule on mixed fibres. But this is not one of those things and for the Bishop to say as much suggests that he and I are not reading the same Bible. Maybe we need to have a sit down and go through it together.”

Last week Lambeth Palace released a statement to the effect that senior Church officials would shortly be sitting down with Government representatives to discuss the referendum plan, however the Church has not yet decided whether it will take a public position on the matter.

However some sources believe that one or other of those who have spoken out recently may have been serving as a proxy for the Archbishop of Canterbury, though who is not clear.

Congressman Graves lays down challenge to Senator Seaborn

Californian Congressman Jarrod Graves laid down a challenge to incumbent Senator and the favourite for the 2018 Democratic Presidential nominee Sam Seaborn.

Both men swept to uncontested wins in their respective primaries last night and Congressman Graves, a close friend of the Lassister family declared in his victory speech "The liberal media and liberal elite seem to think this race is over before it begins, that Senator Seaborn has it won and he will then sweep onto the White House in two years time, well before that he is going to have to get past me. I am going to be challenging the liberal, failed views of the Senator all the time, I am in this to win it, and with the support and the votes of good people of this great state I am going to do that".

Senator Seaborn did not hold a victory speech, he just released a statement through his office saying that he was "pleased once again to be the Democratic nominee for Senator" and "that he looked forward to the campaign with Congressman Graves" who he called a "great public servant for the people of his district and California" adding "I hope that we can have a great campaign and debate the issues that face California".

Dennis Suggett wins Democratic Senate nomination in South Dakota

The former Attorney General of South Dakota Dennis Suggett will be the Democratic candidate to take on Republican incumbent Robin Fulton after a easy with over 95% of the vote, with the remaining 5% scattered to three other no-hoper candidates.

Suggett is seen to have little chance in beating Fulton, and many in the Democratic Party gave up on this race the minute they failed to persuade both former Senator and Vice-President Wendell Tripplehorn and constitutional Professor Lawrence Lassing to run. Suggett himself has joked that he is "first rate but third choice".

Latest Texas Guberatorial Poll shows De Haan ahead, Independent Long ahead of Lt Gov Gomez

A latest poll for NBS in Texas for the Guberatorial election shows Republican Adam De Haan is pulling clear in the three man race to replace John Hoynes.

De Haan who was joined on the campaign trail yesterday by Vice-President Elizabeth Clark and her nephew Kurt Clark who is the Republican nominee for Lt Governor now looks to be the clear favourite to win back the Governor's mansion in Austin for the Republicans.

The clear surprise is that Independent Businessman Andrew Long has over taken Democratic Candidate the current Lt Governor Ralph Gomez, who is struggling with money and endorsements despite his narrow defeat of former First Lady Helen Santos in the Primary back in March.

Texas Poll (decided voters)
  1. Adam De Haan 40%
  2. Andrew Long 32%
  3. Ralph Gomez 28%
Texas Poll (with undecided voters)
  1. Adam De Haan 36%
  2. Andrew Long 26%
  3. Ralph Gomez 21%
  4. Undecided 17%

I apologise for anyone who does not find this interesting, but I feel compelled to write my sympathies and dearest prayers for the family and friends of Jo Cox MP.

Its at times like this that I am reminded how brutal and cold some people in this world are, and the importance of silly little threads on forums that give people of varied political views a place to find common ground.

We must always make sure that we combat violence and hate with peace and debate. Everyday people are killed for what they stand for, and today I am reminded so that more needs to be done.

When we write about fictional tragedies, it is easy to forget the real world we live in.

Rest in Peace Jo Cox.

I felt that it was better to wait at least a bit after Orlando to do a post.

Indeed, we have had two awful tragedies in the last few days. The events in Orlando have left me without much desire to write this week on this thread and again the events in the UK today with the murder of Jo Cox MP.

I cannot add any thing much other than what have just been posted by JFWR above, and some words from the show.

Clark getting ready to run for the 2018 nomination

Vice-President Elizabeth Clark is starting to put together her team for a run for the 2018 Republican Presidential nomination.

Clark, who had said back in 2014 she was "unlikely" to run has changed her mind over the past 18 months especially with her well known disagreements with outgoing White House Chief of Staff Henry Shallick, the man that many informed insiders believe is President Walken's preferred successor as the Republican standard bearer in two years time.

Clark who has been campaigning in Texas with her nephew Kurt Clark who is the Republican nominee for Lt Governor has also paid recent visits to Iowa and New Hampshire, the key early states in the Presidential primary calendar although her aides say that these visits were to campaign with the Senate candidates, Iowa's Bryce Bradley and in New Hampshire the Granite States former First Lady Ellie Wilkins, she did meet with key state party officials.

On the campaign side Clark is believed to have already asked Colt Merchant to run the campaign, Merchant a veteran Republican campaign manager masterminded Ethan Butler's successful run for Governor in South Carolina last year.

Shallick Hits the Trail for Republicans As Contenders vie for 2018 position

Henry Shallick, the former Governor of Missouri and most recently White House Chief of Staff has outlined an ambitious schedule, raising money and stumping for Republican candidates up and down the country ahead of this November’s midterms, a move that gives the strongest hint yet that the former Congressman intends to seek the GOP Presidential nomination in 2018.

As Vice-President Liz Clark begins to gear up her own run, Shallick is increasingly emerging as the most likely challenger – a move that many believe is sanctioned by President Walken who believes his long time political ally is better placed to carry forward his legacy.

Shallick spent the weekend in Iowa, appearing at events for Senate candidate Bryce Bradley who is locked in a close race with incumbent Rod Kasey. GOP insiders believe that a Shallick primary strategy would likely focus strongly on Iowa.

Mr Shallick is also expected to appear this week in North Dakota with Matt Chantler, a heavy favourite to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Conroy before stumping for Barbara Layton in North Carolina. His Senator wife Laura, who is herself up for re-election will make a joint appearance with her husband in Kansas City next weekend.

With the news that Vice-President Clark is already assembling her team, Shallick is expected to bring together a number of the key architects of President Walken’s two election victories – he remains close with Ann Stark and Jane Braun and is widely expected to hand the reigns of his campaign to Chad Driller, the man credited by many for salvaging the Walken re-elect from the jaws of defeat in 2014.

Katzenmoyer urges former Senator Lyons to run for the Presidency

Former Wisconsin Governor Mark Katzenmoyer who is fighting cancer has urged the states former Senator Jeremy Lyons to run for the Presidency in 2018.

Lyons who retired from the Senate four years ago was on Jimmy Fitzsimmons shortlist for Vice-President in 2014 and is highly regarded by all sides on the Democratic party, although California Senator Sam Seaborn is the clear and obvious front runner for the nomination, many other Democrats fancy a run for the nomination and many believe that Seaborn is not unbeatable. It is well known that neither Katzenmoyer or Lyons have much regard for the Bartlet wing of the Democratic party, and believe that Seaborn has enough weakness to be beaten for the nomination for example his defeat in the 2003 Congressional Special election.

Cool thread! Keep it up.
Thanks we try. Had a break over the events of the past week in the real world, but we are back now and looking forward to the mid-terms and the 2018 Presidential Election which will be the third we will have done and the first time for a multiple primary for both the Republicans and the Democrats.

I have followed this sporadically for months. Hope to see some more gold weaved.
