Illinois Governor Backs Fitzsimmons Presidential Run

James Leyland, the Governor of Illinois, last night said that Massachusetts Senator Jimmy Fitzsimmons should “definitely be thinking about running for President.”

Leyland, who won election in 2012 dismissed claims that Fitzsimmons was too inexperienced saying “He was Mayor of Boston for eight years, that’s an extremely tough and high profile job. He’s only been in the Senate for a short time but he’s shown he can work across the aisle and get things done. I don’t think you can dismiss him.”

The Governor also dismissed comparisons with former President Matthew Santos who has a similar level of experience before becoming President. “For me there are two things on that. Firstly, I don’t accept the inference that President Santos was a poor President. He faced extraordinary challenges and without him we have faced the abyss of depression and a collapsed banking system. Secondly, Senator Fitzsimmons was a Mayor for much longer and with all due respect to President Santos has been a more effective legislator.”

Leyland who continues to draw admiring glances from across the political spectrum for his pragmatic approach to tackling the budget in Illinois and in tackling corruption also fired back at criticism of the whole Democratic field. “I don’t see a weak field, I see a collection of reforming Governors in Josie Bail, Kate Crossley and Ben Newell. I see a former Vice-President who has become a significant voice in the party and I see one of the most effective and skilled Senators I’ve ever met. I think any one of them can take the fight to President Walken.”

Editorial: Does Liz Bartlet Want To Be Governor?

This newspaper has long supported the Bartlet family. We were early endorsers of President Bartlet in his run for Governor and we wholeheartedly endorsed him before the Primary in the 1998 election, but we are starting to ask serious questions about the political aspirations of his daughter Elizabeth.

Ms. Bartlet looked to be an outstanding candidate when she announced at the start of the year and even now in her public appearances she comes across as measured and sensible and to be in possession of a formidable intellect, but her increasingly erratic behaviour is a major cause for concern.

For the second weekend in a row we are hearing that she has cancelled a series of campaign events without offering any reason why and over the past month seems to have reduced her campaign to a series of press releases.

We fully appreciate that we remain very early in a primary process but this was a candidate who promised us unprecedented access and transparency should she become Governor – this doesn’t bode well.

If Liz Bartlet is to become Governor she not only has to win a contested Primary but then must likely defeat former State First Lady Ellie Wilkins – a not insignificant task. At this stage we intend to offer no support or backing to any candidate but thus far can only reflect disappointment in the performance of the Democratic front runner.

Howard Confirms That He’ll Vote Against Cambridge

Washington Senator Andrew Howard has broken with many of his colleagues today after confirming that he intends to vote against the confirmation of former Virginia Senator Brian Cambridge for Defense Secretary.

With a vote likely by the end of the week, Cambridge’s unsteady performance at the hearings has thrown his confirmation into doubt, but Howard is the first Senator to publicly confirm a no vote.

“I’m very concerned about his inability to clarify the differences between the President’s positions and previous statements he’s made. The hearings have made me feel like he’s little more than moderate window dressing for a President who wants to continue with the same interventionist foreign policy.”

When asked whether his decision had anything to do with the circumstances of Cambridge’s withdrawal from the Presidential race Howard said no. “This isn’t about that. This is about my concerns over the suitability of a candidate who wants to reverse position so dramatically on a wide range of key policy issues.”

President Bartlet back in hospital

Former President Josiah Bartlet has been taken back in hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire today.

A spokesman for the Bartlet family said that the President had returned to hospital after having "virus & fever for several days".Doctors had been running tests and treating the 71-year-old, but have not found a cause for the fever he added that this illness was "not contected" to the President's MS.

The former President's health has been a concern for the past year so, and has been in and out of hospital several times in the past twelve months, and is now mostly confined to a wheelchair. He last appeared in public back in May, the tenth anniversary memorial for Zoe Bartlet's kidnapping.

Pratt endorses Haffley as voting begins

Washington, D.C. --- Former Tennessee Governor and current RNC Member Ed Pratt has endorsed Jeff Haffley for RNC Chair. Pratt said "I respect Brad Maxwell and Ray Sullivan, but at this moment I believe that Jeff Haffley has the plan and will to execute it that the party needs.

Many speculate that Pratt's endorsement comes from the fact that Haffley is likely to win on the first ballot and that Haffley's brand of conservatism lines up closer to Pratt's than Sullivan or Maxwell.

Voting is scheduled to begin at 12PM and the results of the first ballot are expected no later than 1PM.

Haffley leads on first ballot; falls 4 votes short of victory

Washington, D.C. --- Jeff Haffley came close but no cigar. Haffley's failure to win on the first ballot could result in many more ballots since Haffley's main selling point to undecided RNC members was his inevitability. Haffley's campaign manager Alex Johnson was optimistic, "We are delighted by the strong show of support look forward to victory at the end of the day."

Brad Maxwell's supporters were jubilant when his unexpectedly high results were announced.

Sullivan's results were disappointing since they were less than his endorsements.

Results for round two are expected around 1:15PM.

Maxwell gaining; Haffley and Sullivan losing ground

Washington, D.C. --- Former South Carolina Congressman Brad Maxwell may be on the verge of pulling off the upset of the century (at least for the RNC). Maxwell has gained 2 votes on the second ballot while Haffley and Sullivan lost 1 vote each.

Maxwell was not expected to do this well, but his strong showing may lead to his election as the compromise choice at the end of the day.

A motion was made by a Maxwell supporter to shorten time between ballots from 20 minutes to 10. The motion passed 83-80.

Round 3 results are expected around 1:45PM.

RNC Election (Second Ballot)

Jeff Haffley - 80 (-1)
Ray Sullivan - 47 (-1)
Brad Maxwell - 41 (+2)

Haffley: "Let's get to work"

Washington, D.C. --- Newly elected RNC Chairman Jeff Haffley thanked the committee for their support in him and his plan for the party.

In a rare display of emotion Haffley tearfully thanked the RNC members for giving him another chance. "Most people say.”Three strikes and you’re out". But today, you have given me another chance to serve the party that has been so good to me, and the country that gave me birth. I want to thank Ray and Brad for an honorable and spirited contest. I want to thank my family and all of those grassroots supporters around the country that made this race truly unique in the history of the RNC. That said, let’s get to work."

Haffley spoke briefly about his plan to build a new Republican majority which he released last month in his "Contract with Conservatism". "We've got a country to save, a White House to hold, a Senate to make filibuster proof, and a House to retake. In the weeks ahead we will lay the foundation for a great victory in 2014, 2016, 2018, and as long as it takes until America is truly a light to the nations and a shining city upon a hill. God bless you all, let’s get to work"
