2008: President Joe Biden

For this timeline to work, I believe the POD is once again, Obama not running. Biden beats Hillary in the Primaries, winning the Democratic Presidential nomination. His running mate is Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Because of the Economic Collapse of 2008, he easily beats McCain-Palin and in 2012 Romney-Ryan. This question stems from my curiosity of what kind of president he would have been like compared to Obama.

If Obama doesn't run, I really don't think Biden will fill the anti-Clinton void. More likely John Edwards becomes her main challenger, but even then I have a hard time seeing Clinton losing it.

Yeah, Biden did not have a particularly strong campaign, and the demographics of the Democratic primary electorate are not at all favorable to him. Even if he captures the "Anybody but Hillary" vote (which will certainly exist, but likely doesn't go to him), that's not enough on its own. Obama had significant support among younger voters and African Americans, two groups that Biden seems unlikely to attract in sufficient numbers. Indeed, without Obama, Hillary is likely to retain her initial strong support among African American voters, making it even harder for Biden to get anywhere.

Of course, if he wins the primary, he'll win the general; no Republican was winning in 2008 barring a near-miracle (John Edwards as the nominee might barely be enough). It's getting Biden past the primary that essentially requires an asteroid strike on the Democratic debates.

Don't sleep on Biden people.

Until Obama jumped in I was all in for Joe. As where more then a few others like myself who were in the under 30 crowd

Yes, but that's not nearly enough to win the primary. She came fairly close to beating Obama, who was a vastly better candidate in every way, and had significant support outside that demographic.

Millennials turning out for Obama got most of the attention, but if you look at the results, a huge portion of Obama's support came from the African American community, which make up a ton of the Democratic primary electorate, especially in the South and big cities. Obama made a major effort to target those voters from the beginning; without him those votes are more or less up for grabs, and Hillary has a much better capitalizing than Biden does.

Yes they do make up a large portion of the democratic party.

I don't think he beats Hillary in this scenario. Obama's main advantages that allowed him to overcome the Hillary juggernaut were that he was young, fresh, and different -- Biden is none of those.

If Biden does somehow win the nomination, I don't think he wins easily, especially with his tendency to say really stupid things. If he does win in 2008, I'm not at all sure he'll win in 2012 -- either Obama may challenge him for the nomination or Romney might win.

If president, I suspect he doesn't start with such messianic adoration from the press and internationally (or within his own party). He's also more 'establishment' than Obama and likely won't run as roughshod over the opposition in Congress. He may not 'accomplish' as much of what he wants, but he'll breed far less anger and opposition, allowing Congress to keep functioning somewhat better.

He's also less likely to use executive orders as rampantly as Obama.

What if John Edward's campaign team leaked his extramarital affair before he can campaign in 2008, leading the race to be mainly between Joe Biden and Hilary Clinton

Biden can use the fact that he has been in the senate, since 1973 and that his 35 years of experience beats Clinton's 7 years.

Potential Vice Presidents
- Current Majority Whip and South Carolina Representative, James Clyburn, could win the African-American and southern votes? Makes history as the first African-American vice president!
- Senate Majority Leader and Nevada Senator, Harry Reid
-Governor of Washington, Christine Gregoire, could gain the female vote?
- Representatives from California and current Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, winning female votes, the state of California (?) and carrying on her record as the highest-ranking female politician in American history.
- If you want a female senator from California, you could have, Dianne Feinstein or Barbara Boxer.
- Florida Senator and former astronauts, Bill Nelson
- Ohio Representative Sherrod Brown
