2004 election without Kerry

What if John Kerry never ran in 2004??? I imagine Bush would still obviously run, but who would the Dem be and could the Dem win??

I'd put my money on either John Edwards or Dick Gephardt as the most likely options, with Howard Dean having an outside shot here. For either Edwards or Gephardt, I could see them possibly choosing Dean as VP nominee whereas conversely they'd both be solid options for Dean (Gephardt being somewhat moreso, with more experience in Congress). Ultimately I don't think any of them beat Bush though, honestly.

Kerry hit Bush over invading Iraq when Bin Laden was the actual aggressor. Had the book of swift boat lies/accusations not been published, the smear against the Democrat would not have been as severe and maybe he could have won.

I agree here. It's easy to forget now, but Bush was actually pretty popular in his first term. It wasn't until Katrina hit that the tide turned against him.
