2000 w/o Gore or McCain

Say VP Al Gore is assassinated mid, late 1999, or thereabouts -- pure nutjob with nonsensical motivations who got too close with a weapon, etc. Shortly thereafter John McCain has heart trouble, and withdraws from the race. How do the Democratic and Republican races play out?

For example, is it possible w/o McCain that Steve Forbes stands a chance against Bush? Who are the leading candidates for the Dems -- Evan Bayh? Joe Biden? John Kerry? Someone else? Or does Bill Bradley actually stand a fair chance of taking the nomination in this situation?

Hilary VP then President??

Bill Clinton is not going to appoint his wife and VP and the Senate will never ratify it.

in the OP scenario Clinton very likely selects some senior Politician who however has no Presidential ambitions since being VP would be tantamount to selecting the next nominee.

I say West Virginia Senator (and former President Pro Tempore of the Senate) Robert Byrd or outgoing NY Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan would be the best choices.

as for candidates .

on the Dem side

Bill Bradley runs as in OT

the 2004 field moves up-- Howard Dean, John Kerry. Dick Gephardt . No John Edwards however, too early.

and people who were looking at running but didnt in 2000- Bob Kerrey, Jesse Jackson and Paul Wellstone also jump in.

on the Republican side GWB takes it in a cakewalk. it was Mccain's maverick status that allowed him to to become the Anti Bush, Forbes isnt different enough from GWB for that role.

if McCain isnt there then Fred Thompson takes his place but Thompson is a horrible campaigner as seen in 2008.
