i have to what ifs and i know that they are somewhat implausible, but i had to ask:
1. what if Hitler had invaded Switzerland before the invasion of poland, and right after he took Czechoslovakia.
2. what if he had only held a small force on the Polish Border, capable of defending German territory, and invaded France first?

1) He would've bogged down in the mountainous terrain. No, there weren't Gebirgsjager divs. then. Swiss wasn't exactly the sissypuss some people imagine it to be. They already had mines in the (most important) railway tracks and they had mobilized just every person in the country.

There was also this backup plan, where only 100.000 soldiers would be deployed on the borders, the rest would retreat to a 'National Fort' high in the Alpen. Trust the Germans to bleed to death trying to attack that.

Mussolini's army wasn't in a state to do anything. Actually there were Nazi organizations in the Swiss area and they had 40.000 members at their height. There were also at least 40.000 Germans in Swiss. But the organizations were deemed crazy even by Nazi standards. One of them wanted to kill Hitler for not being anti-semetic/ anti-communist enough.

Also, in 1936, some Jewish doctor from Bern University killed the head of the National-Socialist party in Swiss, Wilhelm Gustloff. The Swiss responded by not allowing any replacement for Gustloff, so now the Natso in Swiss has a leadership crisis. Then the Swiss had a 'Police-who-monitor-political-organization' kind of thing after this incident, to stop potentially subversive political orgs from springing up.

The Nazis also made several attempts to send spies into Swiss, but most of them failed...

Sorry, I don't know enough to comment that other WI :p Since I am focused on the Nazi's Eastern Front, Germany-againts-USSR kind of stuff.
