2-3 succesions beyond the VP

Quite a number of both Presdients and VPs died in th 19th and early 20th century.

There was also a vp resignation and a near conviction following impeachment of a Presdient

WI there had been some instances of double vacancies.

Would the 1790s law for a s pecial election have applied?

It would have applied up to 1886, unless the death occurred in the final year before the regular Presidential election. Curiously, in the two cases where it probably came nearest to happening (Andrew Johnson in 1868 and John Tyler in 1844) that would have been the case, so elections would have proceeded normally.

However, had Atzerodt killed Johnson in 1865 that ould have triggered a new election later that year.
