WARNING: VERY EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND (and in some ways detailed). Also quite graphic in certain areas.
I've been lurking on the site for a while, and gotten to know the term "ASB", found out that it is an abbreviation of flying mammals of extraterrestrial origin, and that "ASB" is used as outcry against a TL that the speaker finds is BS.
All I can say is: Go easy on the n00b here
My first attempt at a TL is sometime in the not too distant future (I've seen TLs go into the future here, so I'm assuming I can do it too).
First a disclaimer: My personal views on the topics adressed in this TL cannot be deduced from the contents of it. This is a timeline; a work of fiction, not a political manifesto. Neither should ANY part of it be understood as bias, bigotry against anyone, or attempts to stir up trouble. Again: This is a work of fiction, a dystopian scenario hatched somewhere in the back of my head.
Background
November 2011
The Center-Left opposition wins the Parliamentary elections on a platform of "improving the welfare system", and Social-Democratic leader Helle Thorning Schmidt becomes Prime Minister. The new government during the course of its eight-year period suspends "reductions in welfare", at first attempting to fund this suspension by lobbying its labor union supporters to accept increased working hours....unsucessfully. Then taxes are raised because "we need to find the money".
Immigration policies remain relatively strict, but the government implements the Metock- and Zambrano-rulings after pressure from the Social-Liberals and the far-left Unity List. The massive wave of foreigners from 3rd world countries that critics, including the Danish People's Party, have feared does not happen, but immigration rates do increase noticeably in these years.
March 2019
Ethnic tensions, which had been building for years, because of perceived scrounging on Denmark's generous welfare benefits, come to a climax in Aarhus after a Danish teenager is raped by a group of Arabic refugees in the suburb Gellerup, who film the whole thing and puts it up on Youtube with the arabic title: "Danish girls are whores". The video is removed by administrators after only a couple of hours.
The first to rage against this act, is the Danish Muslim Council, openly denouncing "these boys, who have disgraced not only themselves, but the name of the blessed Prophet (SAWS) and of Islam with their heinous act". This statement is followed by reactions from several other muslim leaders, in similar tones, as well as politicians from all sides of the political spectre, though some in harsher words than others. The Prime Minister says that she "has full confidence in the ability of the police to resolve this matter", and the Minister of Justice refuses to say a single word on the case, noting that he "does not comment on individual cases".
But in the age of quick mobilization of "likes" on Facebook, this is not the end of the case. The tabloid papers start bringing more and more stories about people having been attacked, robbed, raped, etc, by "muslims", and opinion polls start to show a tendency towards a more negative image of muslims. No longer mostly amongst the older generation, but for the first time since the early 2000's, young people are getting more and more sceptical too; some having been victimized themselves, others having friends who had bad experiences...and the 90% who just read about it in tabloids.
Tension is growing...
June 2019
Aarhus Discrict Court rules in the so-called "Gellerup-case", the most followed case of rape in recent Danish history.
Excerpt from the sentence:
"It is held: The defendant Said Rahman (there were 5 defendants in all) is found guilty of 1 count of rape, compounded by the following humiliation of the victim by making the crime publicly available. ... Said Rahman is sentenced to 2 years in prison"
The other rulings are as follows:
1,5 year
1 year
6 months
6 months
3 months suspended - the youngest of the group, a 16-year old boy.
The prosecutor in a theatrical stunt not seen before or since in a Danish court, filled out the appeals form on the spot, and appealed to the Regional Court immediately, but the ushers had serious problems maintaining order, as the audience burst into an uproar - the defendants friends and the victim's family (and many, many sympathizers) both crying foul, for different reasons.
The straw that broke the camel's back, was when the defendants exited the court, and faced friends and family on one hand, and scores of angry protesters on the other hand, incensed about what they perceived as the "de facto aquittal" Most of the defendants let the police officers lead them to the squad cars for transport, but the youngest, the one who'd gotten 3 months suspended, smiled, then yelled "F... this country! She's a whore and she WANTED IT!"...and that's when all heck broke loose.
When the police tried to push him into the squad car first, to get him out of reach of the protesters, a group of men in balaclavas pushed their way to the front of the line, catching the police totally by surprise. The officers didn't have time to react, before they'd been pushed aside, and surrounded by the angry mob, as the men in balaclavas had taken off in the squad cars with the defendants.
Later that day, an anonymous tip was made to the police as to where they could be found. All were found with their...private parts cut off, their throats cut. On each of them was a sign: "Halal-meat......justice!"
The story was all over the media, and government politicians, as well as most from the opposition, came out and spoke up against "vigilantism, which has no place in a civilized society".
The Danish Muslim Council also issued a statement saying it "deeply deplored this horrendous act of racist brutality"
June-October 2019
During the next few months, tensions spiralled. Many muslims wanted revenge for what had happened that day - the boys/men had been slaughtered like animals.
Long story short: In the larger cities, Aarhus, Odense, Copenhagen, Aalborg, it became very dangerous to go out at night, so people started gathering in ethnic-based "protection squads". Police was more or less powerless to prevent much, since by the time they arrived on the scene, fights were long over, and only those so badly injured that they couldn't move on their own were left to be arrested.
The Prime Minister, forced by the Constitution, called for general parliamentary elections on November 8th 2019.
November 2019
Then....Denmark's 9/11 came.
On November 1st, a week before the election and in the final stages of the election campaign, which had been dominated by the growing ethnic tensions in Denmark's cities, a suicide bomber blew herself up in the crowded courtyard at Amalienborg Palace, killing 50 people, including several tourists, and 2 Royal Guardsmen..
Almost just as damaging psychologically, the explosion vaporized the limousine taking the now very much aging, but still beloved by most Danes, Queen Margrethe II returning to the Palace.
The Danish Muslim Council immediately denounced the attack, for which a Pakistani terrorist organization claimed responsibility, and expressed its "absolute horror over this attack against all Danes; muslims and non-muslims alike". Little does it help, though, as mosques are torched all over Copenhagen, as well as random people who happen to "look muslim" are attacked and sometimes killed in the streets. The "protection squads" intensify their battles, and the police are unable to stop the riots and streetfights until they bulk of the two mob armies simply decides that they need to regroup to regain their strenght and reorganize. For the first time ever, authorities had been unable, not unwilling, to put down a riot. And that would prove fatal in the months ahead. At the end of that day, a total of 500 people had been killed, and more than a thousand wounded. Some in the fights...some in the initial bombing....many more because they just happened to be in the way of a molotov cocktail or cobblestone on their way home.
November 5th
Crown Prince Frederik is, as the first king of Denmark to be so since the abolition of absolutism, crowned by the bishop of Copenhagen in Roskilde Cathedral, taking the throne as
"King Frederik the Tenth; by the grace of God King of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Protector of the People"
His royal motto: I enhed er Danmarks styrke ("In unity is Denmark's strength")
Election Day
Come election day, the Danish People's Party, which had had excellent opinion polls even before the attack, win by a landslide. For the first time in recent Danish history, a single party takes 45% of the votes - only slightly less than required for an absolute majority in parliament. The negotiations for the formation of government are historically short, taking only a couple of days. The Social-Liberal Party loses their seat in Parliament altogether, as does the Unity List. Both parties had campaigned on a platform of attempting to "bridge the gaps", "move on", "build understanding", and the like. In an unprecented move, the two parties issue a joint declaration, briefly stating:
"The Danish people has listened to the voices of radicalization, of brutality, of inhumanity. That is its right, as democracy would be empty words if the people was not free to make mistakes. But it is our hope that this mistake can be rectified before we get too far down this path that we have embarked upon today. For it is a very dangerous path indeed"
(TO BE CONTINUED. Once again: This is my first attempt at a TL. If you don't like it, please don't yell ASB right away. Tell me how it's silly, and how I can change it. If you DO like it - I'd like suggestions for the reactions of other counties to this...development in Denmark. I have something in mind, but I won't say what right now)
