19th Century Pop Culture POD's

Julius Verne planned to make Captain Nemo a Pole, who is taking revenge on Russians after fall of January Uprising. His editor feared, that such book would be banned in Russian Empire and convinced Verne to change Nemo's nationality, but what if he didn't? Could it really cause diplomatic problems between France and Russia?
 
With a POD no earlier than, say, the end of the American Civil War, what's the earliest the film industry and radio can come into existence and become significant cultural forces?
 
Vincent Van Gogh doesn't kill himself in Auvers-Sur-Oise in 1890, painting plenty more masterpieces and possibly reaching fame before his (much later) death.

I think there are a lot of artists and writers' untimely deaths that can be averted on that topic.
