1989: Chinese Democracy begins

I wonder what if more liberal wing of the Chinese Communist Party had been strong enough prevent the massacre of 1989, and as result the Communist had started too losen it grip. Where had we been today?

The same, more or less, except that human rights groups wouldn't be so against China.
 
Are you looking for a more liberal CCP regime or a Gorbachev style release of power?

I'm not too sure really but I know Tibet would become the ultimate political land mine, the Han majority and the Dalai Lama's return would be painful.

Then you have Taiwan, how keen would the KMT be to lose total control over their small island for a chance to take over the mainland?
