1989: The Fall of Communism

This TL is basically set up on the premise that instead of Gorby a hard-line soviet leader comes to power and refuses to withdraw from Afghanistan.

CHAPTER I: Crisis Point, PART I
On the 27th December 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and faced wide diplomatic pressure to withdraw. Almost 10 years later in 1985, Vladimir Cherchenko was elected as the General Secretary by the Politburo. Young, Mikhail Gorbachev was expected to be the next General Secretary but unfortunately he was killed a few days earlier in a car crash.
Cherchenko was a hard-line Soviet politician, he believed that the Soviet Union was more powerful under Stalin and he was a firm believer in Stalinist policies. In 1989, pressure on the Soviet Union to withdraw from Afghanistan was at it's pinnacle. Cherchenko refused to back out from Afghanistan and this is where our story begins....

THE WHITE HOUSE, 27th January 1989

"Mr. President, Premier Cherchenko refuses to withdraw his troops from Afghanistan?"
"Carry on supplying weapons to that resistance group-"
"The Mujahideen?"
"Yes, them and also ring Thatcher and tell her of the news. I also want West Germany on the line and tell them to step up sercurity."
"Yes, Mr. President."
"One last thing, Johnson."
"Yes, sir"
"Tell our allies to stop ALL trading, I want to squeeze those red bastards."
