RHODES: WALLACE WILL BRING PEACE TO THE STREETS
[Headline of the Cincinnati Post 8/3/1971]

"The President called me in for another meeting today, apparently, he's increasingly concerned with threats coming from this guy, a congressman from Ohio, John Ashbrook was his name, who was a Republican that apparently had a lot of bad things to say about the President, and a lot of good things to say about George Wallace. While most of the country thought he was a nut job, he had a very strong position among the right.
We needed the Right to even come close to scraping up the 270 votes we needed to avoid a vote in the House, which would surely benefit Humphrey, or whoever the Democrats had put up. Polls showed that the popular vote was split almost into fourths (with that odd SDP taking about 3%). We needed every last vote we could get.
The Aim for the middle strategy was somewhat working, but Lindsay stayed strong in the Northeast, he was leading in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, and coming way to close to the President in New Jersey, and New Hampshire. And face it, everybody already knew that Lindsay was a shitty mayor, but he was still the "Moderate" and had cross party support.
So the President got some guys, hired by this other guy, named Donald Segretti, and boy did he come in handy…."

SENATOR SCOOP'S HAT IS IN
"The leading war-hawk in the Senate, Senator Henry "Scoop" Jackson of Washington State has announced that he will be running for the Democratic Nomination for President, and announced intentions to run in the Iowa primary. Jackson said that the crisis in Vietnam proved that America needed "A strong and effective leader, which can push America to her furthest capabilities." Senator Jackson attacked George Wallace as a "dangerous demagogue" and the Progressive Candidate, John Lindsay for running a "Mayoralty of Incompetence."
There were also a hundred protesters outside Senator Jackson's announcement, many of the signs apparently supporting the small left fringe party, the Social Democratic Party, which attacked Jackson and his opponent, Hubert Humphrey as warmongers. "This is why I left the Democrats," remarked one protester "The SDP are the true allies of change!"
Jackson addressed in his announcement speech his plans of Winning the war in Vietnam, Ending Federal Busing, and increasing public works programs."

RALEIGH CITY COUNCILMAN RUNNING FOR SENATE
A City Councilman from Raleigh, a Mr. Jesse A. Helms, has announced intentions to run for the Senate Seat in North Carolina held by retiring incumbent B. Everett Jordon (D- NC). Helms has announced that he will not run as a Republican or a Democrat, but as an American Independent. Helms has commented that he was and is a great admirer of George Wallace, who is very popular in North Carolina according to polls.
Obviously, Mr. Wallace has confirmed that the National AIP will back Mr. Helms to "the fullest extent of our power." Mr. Helms seems to run on maintaining law and order, opposition to federal busing, winning the Vietnam War, and cracking down on Vietnam War Protests. "They are the most disgusting people I've ever laid eyes upon," said Mr. Helms.
According to polls, Mr. Helms runs a close second to Democrat Nick Galifinakis, who has a strong following among North Carolina's poor and White Working Class due to his opposition to busing, and his support for Federal Social Programs. Helms is ahead of the supposed Republican candidate James C. Gardner by a large margin.
