1972 timeline idea

Hiya :) this is my first real thread on here, but I was curious about a certain scenario in my head. So what if we had a four way election in 1972. My idea for a POD for this is an assassination of Richard Nixon in the summer of 1970, leading to a few years of Spiro Agnew :( needless to say, I'd imagine Agnew as the front runner for 1972, though only a certain crowd would like the bugger. But then, boom-dark horse Gerald Ford, moderate dark horse, emerges, leading to the establishment rallying around him. He barelydefeating Spiro Agnew for the nomination, and ultimately selects moderate John Anderson as running mate  meanwhile, on the democratic side, George McGovern still wins on the democratic side, but Shirley Chisholm does far more successfully, leading to McGovern selecting her as his running mate. Following this, George Wallace announces himself as a candidate for the American Independent Party, leading to Edward Brooke running as protest against George Wallace. Obviously my reasoning is weak so far, but I'd love help on expanding the idea, and for the moment, I'm just curious as to how this hypothetical situation would look :)

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I'm not exactly a Methuselah here myself, but anyway.

Aside from my personal reservations against Agnew (which wouldn't matter, since I'm a Democrat :D) I doubt he'd be the front runner. The charges which led to his resignation, namely tax evasion, bribery, etc. happened far before your described POD. So his disgrace in office could lead to either a stronger Republican party or a weaker one, depending on how you see fit.

Then again, to quote wiki: "In April 1973, when revelations about Watergate began to surface, Agnew was the choice of 35 percent of Republican voters to be the next Republican nominee for President, while then-California Governor Ronald Reagan was second on the Gallup poll." So perhaps he'd have some popularity.

Also, if you want to kill Nixon, here's a good POD: Arthur Bremer (the man who shot George Wallace) wanted to nix Nixon.

Don't forget that Spiro Agnew face not watergate, but a Corruption case as he was Senator, Here he lost his vice presidency to Gerald Ford
Off course as President of USA Spiro Agnew could face impeachment by Capitol Hill.
by the way if Spiro Agnew become President of USA, who he select as Vice president ?

I do confess the Gerald Ford/John Anderson ticket is a dream ticket of mine  I actually had a dream that inspired the idea  but could anything realistically convince Gerald Ford to run? Without Agnew as frontrunner, who would fill that spot?
