Although actually, sans Nixon the "Canuck Letter" is presumably butterflied, and Ed Muskie might take the nomination instead. Assuming 1968 Reagan is as ineffectual and radical as we are assuming, a moderate, competent Democratic candidate would presumably wipe the floor with him.

That is a good point, honestly it is all over the place with possibilities. Humphrey might just jump back in more successfully and say, "Told you so!"

Problem is '72 is the first year with the primary system established by the McGovern–Fraser Commission, so McGovern, knowing the power of early wins, would still do well. It's no longer up to the party bosses.
