1968: K-129 is successfull

Having read Red Star Rogue a couple of month ago. I can't help wondering what if K-129 had been successfull and had been able to blast of its rocket?

Would the Johnson Administration go to war against the USSR or China? Or black it out as maybe a Nuclear weapon stored at Pearl Harbor caused the explosion?

Any thoughts?

I've thought about this, and judging from Red Star, it means global thermonuclear war, with the Americans getting a modest edge over the Russkies (whatever that means, when you're discussing people lobbing hydrogen and atom bombs all over the globe). IIRC, the Americans assumed without question that the vessel was Soviet.

Only if the Russians hadn't made the boat look chinese... Or is that too James Bond?
