1968: 4 way election

Lets say LBJ still runs for president, his only opposition would probably be Eugene McCarthy ( even RFK wouldn't challenge an incumbent), McCarthy wins most of the primaries, and the popular vote, but since LBJ controls the convention, LBJ is still the Dem Nominee. Furious, McCarthy storms out with his delegates, and decides to run on a "Peace Democrat" ticket, taking Wayne Morse as a running mate.

Lets also butterfly Nixon away. Ronald Reagan snatches the SC delegation from Nixon, stopping Tricky Dick on the first ballot, and winning the nomination on the second. To balance the ticket, Reagan chooses Mass Gov John Volpe.

George Wallace still runs as an American Independent.

No clue how this one would go. I would probably bet on a close victory, no matter who wins. Reagan might be seen as too extreme for America in 1968, but LBJ was extremely unpopular.

Anyways, how would an election like this go?

Democratic: Lyndon Johnson/ Hubert Humphrey
Republican: Ronald Reagan/ John Volpe
Peace Democrat: Eugene McCarthy/ Wayne Morse
American Independent: George Wallace/ Curtis Le May

It goes to the House, probably Reagan, depending on who gives in the most to Southern blackmail, since Confederates hold the balance of power.

Humphrey would be easily confirmed in the senate.

I actually think it could go either way in the House though.

At the time, the Democrats had a majority in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

So the Democrats had 29 states in their section.
The Republicans had 18, with 3 split.

But lets take the Wallace states from the Dems, and lets hypothetically give Reagan those three split delegations.

So first ballot: LBJ: 24, Reagan: 21, Wallace: 5

Wallace is kingmaker, so either LBJ tries to steal two of Reagan's, or more likely, Reagan cuts a deal with Wallace, and Wallace would get a nice cabinet position in a Reagan administration.

Second ballot: Reagan: 26, LBJ 24

So we get a President Reagan, Vice President Humphrey, and a ....... Attorney General Wallace? Things might get nasty......
