1963- Cuban Missile Meltdown

October 14th, 1962 (POD) - After US planes discover Soviet missiles in Cuba, a Florida hacker destroyed them through remote detonation. Over the next week, 194 urban areas would be destroyed, plus the entire island of Cuba

October 15th, 1963 - Congress and the White House decide to dissolve the union to states. Most states dissolve to counties.

January 1st, 1964 - The only nations able to survive the entire crisis are Australia, and New Zealand. The Islamic Theocracy, African Republic, and Latin American Union form. Some states survive in the US, namely, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Arkansas, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Some states, Nebraska, Louisiana, and Iowa, are recovering quickly. Because of poor nuclear guidance systems, Salt Lake City and St. Louis are never hit. Siberia, West China, South France, and North Scandinavia.

1964- FALLOUT AND RECONSTRUCTION ERA
North America

Several nations begin to form in the ruin of the US. On January 3rd, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS/Mormon) organizes a meeting between Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and various Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona counties. They become the nation of Deseret. The Capitol is Salt Lake City. In February out East, the Nova Scotia government realizes that Canada is dissolved and the crown is dead, so they invite the governments of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire to a Constitutional Convention in Yarmouth. They form the Acadia Monarchy. The government is ratified and the Capitol is set at St. John, New Brunswick. The Dakotas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, Minnesota, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan meet in Fargo to form a new government, although nine nuclear weapons detonated in the nation. They form the Great Plains Union, with a Winnipeg Capitol. The LDS where smart and had stocked food storage, but supplies where running low. The I-80 is utilized for a transportation of crops to Deseret and minerals to the GPU. Because the meltdown destroyed communication, phone lines are built in the three nations. Michigan is crippled, so counties organize a conference in Sault Ste. Marie to organize a new nation. Representatives from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Ontario attend to form the Great Lakes Union. Burton, Michigan is made the Capitol. The outlook may look nice, but Fallout is a major problem in most of the former US. The population fell below 100 million, and, after the fallout finally stopped in November, 20 million due to starvation. Of the survivors, their is a 25% of cancer in the next 25 years. Child deformities are around 10%. Clothing is also difficult to get hands on, nudity is common. The South, West, and Northeast have difficulty recovering. The final nations formed are the Yukon alliance and kingdom of Hawai’i. Their is a ray of hope, however. Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of the TV and a Deseret native, announces that nuclear fussion can combat nuclear fission, stopping radiation once a device is built. He plans one, and donations from the 6 American nations donate.

Europe
Europe took some hard hits. Provisional governments in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, and the Kola Peninsula meet in Alta, Norway to plan a new government to administer Scandinavia. Göteborg, Sweden is the Capitol of the Scandinavian Provisional State (SPS). The South France, Welish-Irish Republic, Slovakia, Cape Finisterre, and Adriatic Alliance are formed as well. A ship out of Porto leaves for America to make contact with whoever is still alive.

Yeah hacking a nuclear missile like that is impossible. They don't have the ability to accept external input like that, much less from long range

Also the USSR only had 42 ICBMs plus the 40 missiles in Cuba, their bombers were all sitting ducks, the US is not going to get hit hard enough to dissolve

I think a WW3 in October, 1962 would not last long. Given American superiority, the Soviets would be hit very hard. Plus, remnants of the US Dropshot plan might hamper Soviet communications enough. Yes, some American cities would take nuclear hits, but consider the accuracy or missiles back then. A bomb aimed for downtown might hit ten miles out in a less populated area.

Some people like OP has misconception that WW3 in 1962 would had been MAD. No, it wouldn't. USSR hadn't capacity destroy USA. With good luck perhaps couple coastal cities like New York, Boston, Washington and perhaps something on Pacific states but nothing more and even that much is doubtful.

And hacker in 1960's? How? Then wasn't even home computers. And I am quiet sure that it is impossible even nowadays. And who even would do that outside of some cliche James Bond/Marvel villain/really nut terrorist?

Sorry but this TL doesn't make any sense without much earlier POD. And even then it would be hard.

I was hoping that this was going to be the Cuban Missile Crisis WW3 TL that I had been waiting for. Again, I see that it is not.

Other than that, I'm not going to heap on any more criticism.

I know that we on the board can at times be very critical, but you need to better understand the technological limitations and geo-political circumstances on the early 1960s. Plus understand the limitation and sizes of the various nuclear powers of the world at the time. Don't be discouraged and try again with better POD and after more research
