Nov. 5, 1968: Sen. Robert F. Kennedy wins the Presidency by a 272-266 margin, after a 5,500 vote victory in Indiana and a 4,363 vote margin in North Carolina.

Jan. 20, 1969: President Kennedy's first Inauguration.

OK, I'm not adding either of these because we haven't even gotten a winner for '64, and for the fact that RFK likely would have never went under the circumstances. Try doing something else other than a Kennedy-wank for once, RB. :)

June 2, 1967: Upon seeing demonstrations against himself, Shah Reza Pahlevi leaves Berlin immediatly. While this hurts German-Persian relations, it deescalates the situation in Berlin.

October 9, 1967: Che Guevara flees from conviction in Bolivia, to an unknown location.

November 29, 1967: The People's Republic of China announces to the world, that Che Guevara has seeked refuge in their country. The western world is outraged.

April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr. survives an assasination attempt by James Earl Ray unharmed.

April 11, 1968: German student leader Rudi Dutschke is killed by Josef Bachmann. Although Bachmann was only a lone gunman, many people in te student movement think, that Bachmann was hired by the West German government. This marks the beginning for the student riots in West Germany.

April 14, 1968: Millions of students demonstrate in several cities in West Germany. While a majority stays peaceful, a radicalized minority (Radicalized through the killing of Rudi Dutschke) clashes with police forces. The government in Bonn prepares for an Emergency Act.

May 18, 1968: The French government steps down, after civil unrest spreads to the whole country.

May 30, 1968: The German government breaks up, after the FDP rejected the Emergency laws suggested by chancellor Willy Brandt and the SPD. Thus, election are set up for the 7th of July 1968.

June 5th, 1968: In a speech in the Bavarian city of Fürth, Franz-Josef Strauß surprisingly offers support to the SPD. "Finally the social democrats have realized, what danger lays within our land. If the SPD wants to crack down on subversive elements, we'll offer them our help."

June 5, 1968: Robert F. Kennedy survives an assasination attempt, and continues to run for the Democratic nomination in the 1968 election.

July 7, 1968: Elections in Germany. While the SPD stays the strongest faction, they lose some votes. Surprisingly, the German Communist Party gets 5,1%, and enters the Bundestag. The CSU also performs very well, with 12%. After the election, SPD and CDU start talks regarding a coalition.

So here's the basic plan: Leftist powers are coming up, and the established powers start to panic, and crack down on all leftist movements. This leads to a much more radicalized movements, and probably to much more scary 70's.

Neither of those attempts would have taken place in all actuality.

December 18, 1962: Alexander Shelepin added as a full member of the Presidium to replace Brezhnev.

November 10, 1964: Kosygin, Shelepin and Vladimir Semichastny lead dissenters in the Presidium against Khrushchev. Only Mikoyan defends Khrushchev; everyone else is either silent or openly anti-Khrushchev. He takes their criticism well, offering little defense.

November 11, 1964: Khrushchev resigns from the Presidium.

November 13, 1964: Shelepin becomes the new First Secretary. Kosygin becomes Premier.

May 12, 1968: During the "Poor People's Campaign," organized by Martin Luther King, Jr., demonstrators begin a mass protest in Washington, D.C.. They are campaigning for an "economic bill of rights" intended to eliminate poverty.

Note: replace "Politburo" in the other ones with "Presidium," since that's what it was called at the time.
