1948

In 1948 Truman was very unpopular for some time. There was talk about getting General Eisenhower to run has a Democrat in his place. FDR's kids wanted that to happen. So say Ike runs has a Democrat say he picks Eleanor Roosevelt to be his VEEP candidate? Does Dewey still get the GOP nod? I assume Ike wins big in 48. Now how about Korea in 50? 52 election? Love to hear everyone opinions. I have some of mine own.

Unless Truman decides that he will step down for 1948, I don't see Ike coming in as a Democrat. The Southern delegates will be pissed, and I would imagine that significant portions of other major delegations would be unhappy as well. And he will be stabbing George Marshall in the back.

But if Truman is out of the way, for whatever reason, Eisenhower can easily fill the gap. And he'll win.

If Korea still happens the same way then Eisenhower should intervene as well - although it may go better, since he'll fire MacArthur if he has problems with him.

But Ike was a staunch Republican- which he told Truman a few years later. Hard to see him accepting the Democratic nomination, and at that point he genuinely wasn't interested. Certainly wouldn't take ER as a running mate- she wasn't interested in public office, having just rejected a run for the NY governorship.

Eisenhower did not like Taft. According to ADA's James Loeb. Eisenhower was thinking about it. And would have ran for sure if Taft had been the GOP nominee. With FDR's sons supporting him Ike would have got the nomination I believe. Some historians have said that Truman offered it to him at one time. HST said he did not. In April of 47 The North Dakota Democratic party endorsed Eleanor to be the Vice president nominee. So Ike wins in 48 no matter who his VEEP is. Who runs against him in 52?

A female VP candidate in 1948? They were still figuring out whether women could work outside the home back then; a candidacy that could (potentially) install one as President of the United States is asking too much.
