1944: Plot against Hitler; who is the new Fuhrer?

Do the generals take over? Do they sue for peace, knowing that with unconditional surrender severe punishment is certain? (Forgot to mention, plot succeeds, Hitler is killed)

General Ludwig Beck would've been made the Reichspresident in the event of Hitler's death, with Carl Goerdeler as Reichschancellor.

Not that it matters much as they are likely to be overthrown by Himmler.

Well, I think it is silly to assume that that conspiracy will work even if Hitler is killed successfully. However, among the Nazios, Goering would have a good claim to leadership.

Hermann Goering actually has direct claim to succession, as stated in a decree from June 29, 1941.

Whether or not that claim would be respected by either Bormann, Goebbels or Himmler is an entirely different question, as Fat Hermann was under a very dark cloud in 1944.

While true, the picture won't be clear, and a minor civil war within the country might occur, impeding their war effort further.

I actually think the interim government would have a better shot than you give them credit for. For one, without Hitler the Nazi Party loses a lot of the glue and fusion that had held it together. For another, would the Wehrmacht take orders from Himmler or from the General Staff? The SS or the officer corps?

In earlier years, the Wehrmacht probably would have backed Goering, but considering the state of the war, it's anyone's guess who gets their support.

I think with Hitler gone there would not be a Fuhrer. As I understand the whole thing the military would take control and try for peace terms, their position gets better once the Nazi aspect is played down. While true there may be a civil war, I somewhat doubt it, as most of the books on Nazi Germany paint it as the die-hards, moderates, and simple Germans. For the most part the bulk of the Nazi's did so to keep a job, or join the popular group. The Waffen no doubt is rising up, as is the SS, but the Army, and perhaps airforce would side with the moderates.
