1943 elections in Lebanon

Bright day
In 1943 under de facto British control of French Mandate territories in Near East elections were held.
In Lebanon the original elite supported by France- Maronites was split between pro-French and pro-British factions. The British were represented by one Sir Edward Spears who could not care less for French. Pro-British Maronites thus won and formed an alliance with Sunni- which will break down in 13 years compeltely.

What if instead of Francoiphobe, the Brits are represented by Francophile and the other Maronite faction wins?

Clarification, now that I have time.

Pro-british Maronites struck a bargain (National Pact) with Sunnis on sharing power for acceptance of Lebanon state. Those Maronites believed that future belongs to muslim Pan-Arabism and wanted to, by making allowances for it, to protect themselves. In exchange they officialy rescinded patronage of colonial powers (France).

It did not work and OTL civil war started in 1958, which caused US intervention.

If the Maronites retained their links to France it is undeniable that situation would be more unjust- but the system of former Mount Lebanon would have more time to take root in new Lebanon.

Of course France is fighting in Algeria and this may hurt Maronites vis-a-vis their muslim co-citizens.

I personally do not have enough working knowledge of Near East to tell, so I ask the Honoured Board. What may development of TTL entail? May the French stick be enough to get some sort of democracy of the ground, in whatever twisted form- or is enlarged Lebanon doomed to failure and civil war?
