To a good peace deal without another Great War carnage, of course.
If the PM comes home proclaiming peace only for war to happen anyway which results in a German victory, people aren't going to be thankful about a 'good peace deal'. Britain has been humiliated and it's leaders will suffer. As I said, opinion will be divided enough for Chamberlains Government to survive but there'll be no more landslide majorities.
I point out to the huge crowds that cheered Chamberlain and Daladier back from Munich.![]()
And I point out that Chamberlain was a good PR manager who kept the BBC on a tight leash. He handled Munich by playing up the idea that war was immanent and then announcing at the eleventh hour that peace was secure, causing a "Hooray! We're not going to be bombed!" reaction.
Humiliated, how ? The British Empire stands intact, France stands intact, Germany gained nothing more than what many people in Europe thought might be rightfully hers. A fair compromise peace was achieved with practically no bloodshed to avoid a war Britain did not want to fight and had nothing to gain from.
Their guarantee to Poland has been completely rejected and they have accepted that,
Britain clearly has retreated as a world power
and Germany has become even more powerful.
