1938 World Cup Is Staged In Germany!

The 1938 world cup was actually held in France with Italy winning for the second consecutive time and would have seen the first emergence of Brazil as potential winners. Germany and Argentina lost out when the host nation was decided! What if Hitler's Germany had as could have been the nation chosen in the light of the 1936 Berlin olympics and with Germany incorporating Austria's wunderteam, rumoured at the time to be the world's best and Brazil with its multiracial team possibly doing an 11 man Jessie Owens on the major football stadia of the reich oh and a football confrontation between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany a real possibility and you could throw in Spain. What of another Leni film spectacular!

Slightly off-topic, but wouldn't a film about the Austrian team being incorporated into the German one after the Anschluss make an interesting view? Only if there was some kind of conflict - some players who refused, or something - though. Otherwise it would be quite dull, or you'd be forced to go down the Lies- sorry, Lives Of Others route.

AFAIK, the top Austrian player of the time who was also the captain of the national team refused and his body was found in his apartment shortly afterwards having died in suspicious circumstances. Also Italy won the olympic gold in Berlin'36 beating if i'm not mistaken Germany in the final. Also both Bayern Munich and Rapid Vienna had large Jewish support as did Roma and one top level Hungarian club was always linked to its Jewish community. Nazi Germany played England in above all places Spurs' ground White Heart Lane and were hammered around this period! Spurs along with Ajax are the most famous 'Jewish' supported teams in the world outside of Israel. BTW the Nazi flag which had been flying disgracefully over White Heart Lane was robbed by Spurs' supporters the night before the game and I hope appropriately disposed of!

Also a 1938 world cup staging in the Fatherland would force a more widespread PR effort on behalf of the Nazi regime throughout the country as games would be staged nationwide. Obviously the propaganda machine was in overdrive in Berlin in '36 and at the winter olympics also but that would have been easier to manage than a nationwide effort of lying to the world!

Spain had more important things to care about, and the german Superteam failed spectacularly in the World Cup (beaten by Switzerland in the first round) because half the team consisted of Austrian players put there for propaganda reasons who pretty much sabotaged the team from the inside.

Brazil also lost the WC due to a very boneheaded decision by their coach to not field their star Leonidas in the semifinal against Italy to reserve him for the final. As a result, Italy won 2-1.

I'm definitely going to do more research on this one as I find it very interesting. I think 9 grounds as had become the general rule would have been chosen Berlin -2 including The Olympic Stadium which should be called today if right is right The Jessie Owens' Stadium and another Berlin stadium also 1 each in Vienna, Dresden, Nuremburg, Munich, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund and perhaps surprisingly Breslau as it emphasises the great expansion of the Reich and was the spiritual home of German football with their victory over Denmark there heralding a new dawn- a new style of German football set to conquer in their minds the world!
England were offered a place in the finals' tournament but declined, could they have been lured there with the prospect of a form of world domination in the offing on the Fatherland's home turf - the 3 lions had a superb record against them. After all didn't somebody suggest football is war by another means! Would Italia have played in the fascist black shirts as they did in one finals game in the actual 1938 world cup in France?

I wonder how Poland would have played there. IOTL they were eliminated in first round after a fantastic game against Brasil (6:5 after an extra-time!). Perhaps butterflies would have made them play against some other team and qualify to next round?
