Following the assasination of FDR John Garner proved to be just as bad as Herbert Hoover if not worse. Refusing to deficit spend the economy grew even worse. As a result the socialist party began to grow and in 1934 won several state houses. By the time 36 rolled around Democrats were beginning to recognize the need to dump Garner and nominate a competent candidate as the threat of a socialist or even a competent Republican winning seemed clearer.
