1936 Olympics. US Team Members Killed by SA Members

I'm pondering the short and long term effects if one or several US team members are beaten & killed by SA thugs over racial issues. Any opinions from political and mass social effects experts are welcome. All I've studied from that era are the macro political and some economic subjects. Opinions on how the US and German citizenry will deal with this tragic event are sought.

Thanks

I suspect that if this had happened the U.S. Olympic team and the U.S. government would have received a sincere apology from the German government with the promise that those responsible would be "dealt with." You would then have the "Night of the Long Knives" occur after the Olympics was done.

Reasoning?

Hitler saw the Olympics as a chance to showcase National Socialism. He did not want anything to get in the way of marring the show he and Goebbels had engineered to show Germany as a prosperous and peaceful nation. Any attack on foreign athletes would simply not have been tolerated. If any were hurt they would be cared for at the Reich's expense. If they were killed there would be some compensation paid to their families. Hitler wanted the Games to go off without a hitch and such an incident would have been a public relations disaster.

And those directly responsible quickly executed. I doubt the killers would survive after the Olympics.

This looks like it will have a similar impact as the Panay sinking. It will be well remembered but little in concrete terms. The attitude of racst groups in the US may be different than with the Panay incident.

Effectively cannot happen given that the SA was effectively busted after the Night of Long Knives, Germany was a police state that was hyper-effective at shutting down those sorts of things (especially from groups already on the shit list), and all athletes were kept in the Olympic Village when not competing. Plus the German people were wildly enthusiastic about foreign athletes, so any attack would have a lot of informants against it and probably mob violence against anyone that tried anything in public. In the stadium itself security was so tight that anyone trying to cause a problem wouldn't get the chance. If by a freak chance one such attack happens there will be apologies, massive crackdowns, and executions swiftly.
