I think I've seen people suggesting the Hachemites or even the Saudis doing it but never the Egyptians. How would Islam be changed? They could always say that it was held by the Mamluks before the Ottomans.

The Mamluks didn't claim the Caliphate themselves. They were de facto rulers, but an Abbasid was the Caliph until Egypt fell to the Ottomans.
