1924... no lafollet

what if lafolete did not run in 1924....

i think a lot of lafolet's votes would go towards Davis... they were both lefties

maybe lafollet gets his turn to be the dem candidate in 1928 and beat the conservative hoover

what do u guys think

Wikipedia says both Davis and Coolidge campaigned as Conservatives for limited government, reduced taxes, and less regulation. Meaning both were not lefties.

LaFollette therefore seems necessary to fill that niche; both major party candidates were Conservatives. So it would require someone else to fill the Progressive void.

well anybody can edit wikipedia.. lol. but maybe your right

what do you think would happen then?

Hoover was less conservative than New Deal mythology made him out to be for many years: in fact Coolidge privately disliked Hoover's progressive, interventionist Republicanism. But in 1928 Hoover would have easily beaten LaFollette or any Democrat in a landslide due to peace, prosperity, a long era of Republican dominance since the Civil War broken by two Bourbon (conservative) Democrats: Cleveland and Wilson. LaFollette could not get the nomination because he was too much of a maverick for the Democrats' liking, even though by the 1920s the progressive wing had enough organizational strength to directly challenge the Bourbons provided they had the right leader. Without Al Smith and/or FDR, that doesn't happen.

Wilson wasn't a Bourbon Democrat.

What would you call a pro-gold, low tax, free trade, federalist Democrat? A progressive? Anyhoo, on the OP, Davis was a Bourbon and the choice is between Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Coolidge wins in a landslide on peace and prosperity.
