1901-1911: Qing-German War

After the Boxer rebellion in 1900, the Eight Nation Alliance finally defeats the boxers and leaves China. The Alliance dissolves shortly after. The Qing Dynasty weakens dramatically in the following few years. Unlike Britain or France, Germany stayed in China and set up a naval base in Tsingtao (Qingdao) and spread German influence in-and-around China. In an attempt to save the crumbling Dynasty, Qing soldiers attacked Tsingtao in 1901 but lost to the superior weapons of the Germans. The Kaiser now with an excuse to attack China, sent a strong naval and land expedition to China. The aim of the expedition was to capture Peking (Beijing) and to incorporate China into the German colonial empire. The German expedition captured Peking in 1902. For the next nine years, the newly established German government of China had to suppress wave after wave of Qing rebels in the city and country side. The Germans finally left China in 1911 because tensions were at a boiling point in Europe. One year later, the Qing Dynasty fell. The Germans never returned to China because they had lost WW1.

Tell me what you think! :)

Are you having the other Empires departed from China as a PoD? OTL they remained in their treaty concessions, and wrung further concessions from the Chinese government thus further entrenching themselves there.

Your TL could proceed forward without the others departing if it goes in the direction of a local German/China war at the start. Over the long haul this may (or may not) lead to the further anger of the Chinese at imperialist enroachment in China and a strong leader emerging who can use that anger to organize effective resistance. Or at least better resistance.

Except the Russians in Manchuria, and the Legation guards from every other member of the Alliance?

Britain and France had their own concessions and naval bases in the coast - the rest of the country was divided into informal zones of influence: http://images.classwell.com/mcd_xht...ry/images/mcd_mwh2005_0618377115_p369_f01.jpg

Who would give this command - the Dowager Empress who had just barely retained her throne just because the Western powers decided so? If so, expect a military coup. The Qing generals with intact armies in 1901 were the ones who had purposefully avoided combat with foreign armies, and they would never obey such a suicidal command.

The Germans lack the resources, means and political will to "colonize whole of China", especially since China had 741% more population (415 001 488) than Germany (56 000 000)! And unlike the Indians, the Chinese had a long tradition of unified centralized state. The Boxer revolt made the Western powers to drop any ideas to directly annex large parts of Chinese mainland, so to think that Germany goes in alone and tries to annex the whole thing is simply unrealistic.

But please don't take this too personally.
The time period is really interesting and full of possibilities, so I warmly support all TLs from the region and this part of history. I just personally prefer them to be bit more plausible if they are in this part of the forum.

What he said. I think that if you rework this into a local Chinese leader organizing reisitance to the Germans you will have a good start for something. It could go several directions. If you want a large scale war in China then you might have the local 'German' war grow gradually into a broader anti foreigner revolt.
