1864

Who could beat Lincoln in 1864 and what are the plausible consequences??? I can see race relations being worse than OTL quite easily and obviously, but what would it change most. I personally am someone critical of the Confederacy as they literally founded themselves on slavery, so no Lost Cause posts.

If the Democrats had united on a pro-war, pro-Union platform then they could have run a much more formidable campaign that exploited the division within the Republican party between Lincoln Republicans and Radical Republicans that favored a Fremont third party run. McClellan was probably the best candidate for the Democrats given his national profile but he was doomed from the start by having to essentially repudiate his own platform.

Nevertheless Lincoln still wins as long as the Union armies are winning the field so there would have to be a POD that results in more military disasters for the Union. The best case scenario for the Confederates is a negotiated armistice that sees the union restored with slavery abolished but with compensation for slaveholders as well as fully restored citizenship for all former rebels. No military occupation of the south and no reconstruction, freedmen get the shaft even worse than OTL.
