1861: A more serious incident.

The attitude of British Empire toward the American civil war can be summarized by this cartoon of "Punch":

On November 8, 1861, the USS San Jacinto, commanded by Union Captain Charles Wilkes, intercepted the British mail packet RMS Trent and removed, as contraband of war, two Confederate diplomats, James Mason and John Slidell. The envoys were bound for Great Britain and France to press the Confederacy’s case for diplomatic recognition in Europe.
In OTL, after several weeks of tension and loose talk of war, the crisis was resolved when the Lincoln administration released the envoys and disavowed Captain Wilkes's actions.
But what if during the action some British subjects were killed?
And in the days following another serious accident had occurred between a British and an American ship?
And in New York a crowd had lynched British subjects, and others incidents versus British peoples and properties had occurred in others places of Union?

And if at the last The British Empire had declared war to United States in January 1862 what would happen?

This seems to come up a lot on the board. Do you mean a 'war' the North or Britian comes to the aid of the South? If the latter no, Britain would not support the CSA because of slavery. If the former, maybe. Britain could take and hold some parts of New England. More likely it could be some kind of blockaid.
