1852 Lewis Cass Presidency

Lets say that in 1852 Pierce never joins the race for the Democratic Party nomination (less of a deadlocked race?) and Cass wins. He moves on to secure victory in the General Election against Scott and Butler becomes his Vice President. How would an 1852 - 1856 Cass administration fare? What would he do differently from Pierce?

We basically get a proto-Stephen Douglas; a candidate who supports popular sovereignty in the Territories, filibusters in Latin America, and is lousy with graft money and patronage networks.

Also, a bit of a war-monger who would have supported war with Mexico and pushed just as hard for Oregon and Washington. I wonder, would a dedicated popular sovereignty guy have changed anything at this point?
