What do you mean by "strongest"?

Do you mean field, siege, coastal, naval or what?

Assuming you mean all guns, and the most powerful of those then it's the cast iron 11-inch shell gun cast by West Point Foundry from 1856 onwards as chasers for naval ships.

If you meant field guns then it's the bronze 12-pdrs produced by Alger and Ames, especially the M1841.

I'm no expert in artillery either, but when did Whitworths come out? I know they were used in the various wars of the 1860's and that the 32-lber Whitworths were particularly valued field guns (in the Triple Alliance War, Paraguay waged an entire battle just to get one from the Allies).

Whitworth produced his gun in 1855 in an attempt to gain a British government contract. The only Whitworths in North America were imported by the CSA in 1862.

Strongest is a bit of a red herring, light guns are good for rapid deployment and mountain warfare, medium guns are field guns, heavy guns are a bit easier to quantify because they're mostly for sieges but even then it depends on your intent.

Huh, I always thought they were used by the Union and not the Confederacy because they seemed like the kind of thing that was too expensive and rare for the CSA to acquire. But further reading proves you right, I guess Confederate artillery was not as poor as I had previously thought.

And yeah, strongest in terms of artillery is pretty vague. Are you looking for simply the gun that fires the largest shot? Or do you mean best gun? Because shell size isn't everything, accuracy, loading speed, and actual integral strength of the barrel are quite important.

Personally i think the most Reliable US Gun on the Sea in those times was the Dahlgren. Not Sure what the US mostly Used on the Ground, im tempted to say it is the 68 Pounder gun but at that time a lot of the US Military Ordnance Design was from Winfield Scott
