1744 Questions

I have a few questions, if any one could give me a good site I would appreciate it. Anyway, who would have been louis the 15th's heir if he had died in 1744, and was he any good as a general? Just wondering for a timeline I planning on. Thanks for the help.

Apparently he was quite religious and influenced by the Dévots at court. This included an Austrophobe agenda. If he is King I doubt we see any Austro-French alliance, thus no marriage between the Houses of Bourbon and Habsburg... especially not involving the Dauphin and a certain Archduchess (I dunno if the Duke of Berry, OTL Louis XVI would even become King. The Duke of Aquitaine who died in 1761 OTL could survive).

Edit: I notice this is even before his first marriage, so who even knows what would happen if he suddenly became King in 1744.

The marriage with the Spanish Bourbons still makes sense politically and dynastically, so I think that Maria Teresa Rafaela of Spain would be his bride anyway. If she still dies ITTL after giving birth then the changes would be great. Saxony is politically linked to Austria, and if the new king's Austrophobia is still high then you can forget Marie-Josephe of Saxony.

Yes, I imagine he'd still marry the Spanish Infanta either way. If she survives and they have many children, then I see no issue. If she does die, though, I agree with you. The Dauphin's mother is Polish, the daughter of the King deposed in favor of the Wettins.

Thank you for the help, but I was also wondering what effect this might have on the immediate war effort.

I'm unsure of the Dauphin's martial skill-- apperently Louis XV wanted him to stay away from the front, and he went anyways, at Metz. This caused a great rift to develop between father and son, and there relationship was never the same. He had a great interest in the military arts, I could see him taking interest in military reforms and other such things -- many of the things that made France powerful during the Napoleonic Wars were already going down during the monarchy, such as their artillery for instance.

It would be interesting if both father and son die in 1744, and a succession conflict happens between the house of Orleans and the Spanish Bourbons in the middle of the War of the Austrian Succession.

Yes -- I could see that as quite likely. The Dauphin died fairly young anyways, in his thirties OTL. I could see troubles exploding between those two branches of the family, definately!
