See above. Historically, how terribly might an enemy general or leader get mistreated in Europe, in the 1600s or afterwards? Not just imprisonement or ransom, but was there the possibility of execution, cruel and unusual punishment, etc... or was that sort of thng largely restricted to lower class opposition?
For example, suppose the Glorious Revolution fails and William of Orange and his wife are arrested by the Stuarts. If the King wanted to make an example out of him, how far could he go with William before public or international opinion really took a downswing?
