OK Sorry I haven't updated this in a very long time (mainly because of a VERY busy and writing-intensive schedule).

That said, I would want to continue this further (I've already written a good chunk of the next update, and I'll release it as soon as I finish it)

Uh, one question: Does anyone have a good idea on what France was dealing from 1500-60, because I may have lost count on what are the circumstances that would eventually lead to the turmoil of the 1560s (and one which I intend fully to expoit)

I do not understand your question, especially the bolded part. Can you reformulate, please?

I meant France's situation in that era.
Stable, prosperous, highest population in Europe, second strongest military, planning a North American Empire, etc. A good time to be in the French elite.
The "turmoil of the 1560s" was nothing but a small fluke. France was more than fine, really. (just my opininon, I may be wrong)

So anyone else got some more opinions in the matter?

Religious quite tolerant, though rulers leaning towards Catholicism. In the south a lot of nobles converted to calvinism. King Francis felt surrounded by habsburg. He tries to break the lock by allying with Turkey and breaking into Italy(Milan)

When I read "great Christian power in East Asia" I was expecting it to NOT be Japan.

But nonetheless, I'll be watching this.

PS: I'm guessing the "king who survived" is Sebastian of Portugal.

Hi there. I actually appreciate my first Turtledove nomination, so thanks.

I'll be honest with you guys, updating this TL is now apparently last on my list of priorities, due mostly to mapmaking, RPing a broadcasting company on FTVNation, and updating my NDCR-based ASB TL (see link in my sig), and so on.

Nevertheless, I did write the first part of Chapter II, and as soon as I have the inspiration to do so, I'll continue writing it and then sending it down to you guys.

I hope so. Japan as an outlooking power, sharing the Age of Sail with Europe and dominating the Pacific, is one of my favorite ideas for exploration.

As to France in 1500-1560: united, stable, prosperous, but with a growing Calvinist Protestant population, which led to internal religious wars in the late 1500s. France had as its main foreign policy objective "breaking the Habsburg ring" - Habsburg territory almost surrounded France. The main thrust of this was seeking territory and influence in Italy, through what have been termed "the Italian Wars", beginning in the late 1400s. France was at war in Italy about half the time. Emperor Charles V said "My cousin Francis [I of France] and I are in perfect accord. He wants Milan, and so do I."
