10 Ancient Mesopotamian Cities

How would be possible for the following ancient Mesopotamian cities to be actively settled by at least 50,000 people by 2013:

1. Eridu.
2. Uruk.
3. Shuruppak.
4. Akkad.
5. Ur.
6. Nippur.
7. Sippar.
8. Ashur.
9. Nineveh.
10. Babylon.

How would these cities play a role in modern Mesopotamia?

Difficult... Very difficult. Many of them "peaked" hundreds - if not thousands - of years apart, were associated with different (often adversarial) polities, and some are not inhabited today because the courses of the rivers shifted, leaving them without a water supply.

For Babylon I guess having whoever conquers the region always set up Babylon as their capital due to its history and prestige would do maybe.

Nineveh is now the modern city of Mosul. In fact the archaeology of Nineveh has come largely to a standstill because Mosul sits directly on one of Nineveh's tells.
Babylon is now the Iraqi city of Al Hillah, which I believe is over 50,000. And supposedly, Bagdad is built upon the site of King Sargon's Akkad. ;)

Now get the other 7 to meet the challenge. If it can be done that is.
