Congratulations to Transparent Blue and ah-sue who have tied.

Transparent Blue's entry:

Flag of Austin, Texas.

The blue stripe stands for the Bluebonnet flower, the official flower of Texas and commonly found in Austin, and the Colorado River which flows through the city and played a major part in its history. The white stripe stands for peace (Austin was judged the second safest US city in 2012), the clean air and the silicon tech industry. The violet stripe stands for the "Violet Crown" motto and meteorological phenomenon, where winter sunsets have a wild violet glow over the hills. In the center is a golden star flanked with wings.[/FONT] This emblem is derived from the coat of arms of Stephen F. Austin, the founder of the city, but the cross is replaced with the star to signal secular rule and tolerance for other faiths. The star represents Austin's status as the capital of Texas, both currently as the "Lone Star State" and historically when it was an independent republic. The wings represent freedom and glory.

ah-sue's entry:

CANVEY ISLAND

Canvey Island in the county of Essex became an Urban District in 1926. In 1972 it became part of the mainland Castle Point Borough.

In 2003 the “Canvey Island Independent Party” (CIIP) was formed to fight local elections, with great success as they captured 16 of the 17 wards on the island.

The CIIP later merged with the “Canvey Island First!” organisation to form the “Canvey Island Independence Front”. The activities of the Front led to the island gaining Unitary Authority local government status, when the flag shown below was adopted.

The trident and the three walls denote the island’s dominance over the sea and the sea walls built for protection (In 1953 the North Sea Flood had led to the temporary evacuation of all residents and resulted in 58 deaths). The gold and red colours derive from the flag of Essex County. An orange, white and blue central strip honours the Dutch engineers and settlers who reclaimed large areas of the island. The sea is represented by the blue and white at the bottom of the flag.

The poll was dangerously close to having every entry tie! That would have been a first for the Weekly Flag Challenge.

Because of the two-way tie, I and ah-sue will negotiate the next challenge.

(extra long periods of time because flag sets are required).

Congratulations to Stuyvesant.

Gran Colombia had been trudging along through the 19th Century quietly building up industry and stability, and this lasted until the Presidency of Emiliano Rodriguez. Rodriguez seemed to be like any other two-term Colombian President, but when a normal President would step down to respect the Bolivarian example, he did not. He got to his fifth election and he had friends in seemingly in all the important places, and the people got angry. In reaction, Conservatives had the third son of the King of Spain come to their nation in secret, and initiated a rebellion against the Central Government in Venezuela.

In response, the Republic took up arms against the rebels, and requested the Governor of Maracaibo send troops to aid him. The Governor claimed “I will assist no despot against those who seem better than he,” But when he realized the rebels were Monarchists, he had already sent out the message, and so he told the Conservatives he would support them, but only if they permitted Maracaibo to secede. And finally, the Oligarchs of the Amazonian and Ecuadorian States seized an opportunity they saw to no longer submit to the corrupt government and seceded as well.

Through a coalition of the secessionists and Monarchists, the rebels were able to maintain their independence from Bogota, but the Easterners were unable to supplant Rodriguez.

KEY (Entries Bolded)

Clockwise from upper left:

Gran Colombia Pre-War

Kingdom of Nueva Granada (Constitutional Monarchy)

Republic of Maracaibo (True Democracy)

Republic of Ecuador (Oligarchy)

Republic of Colombia (Dictatorship)

Missed voting becasue I had assumed the poll would close at 23:59 GMT 28 September as no time stated. :(

Could we have a date and time in future challenges?

All discussion goes on the discussion thread.

But to answer your question, it's up to the challenge master to decide which details to include as long as they're clear enough. I didn't specify a time for the voting since I felt this wasn't important. I just set the poll to automatically close 4 days after creation.

Make the flag and state a brief history of an alternate monocultural national union.

Please elaborate. Is it an ethnically homogenous nation state we're supposed to create? Are former settler colonies with their melting pot tendencies allowed?
What about an Imperial Federation consisting of Britain and its white Dominions?

WEEKLY FLAG CHALLENGE #120

Most people have heard that the Nazis toyed with the idea of resettling Jews on the island of Madagascar. The Polish Government actually investigated the idea before the Nazis and it seems to have been in circulation for years before the 1930s.

So, the challenge is to describe and design a flag for a ‘resettled’ state; it doesn’t have to be Madagascar and the ethnic/religious/whatever distinct group doesn’t have to be Jewish. The state could be independent, a puppet state or a straightforward colony of the nation initiating the resettlement.

I won
Fingers crossed I'll have my entry up tomorrow!

EDIT: and here it is

With the Gotterdammerung in full flow the Gods of the Albans were faced with a dilemma, either
A) limit the fall of skyrocks and save the Empire; though they and their people would be greatly diminished and the devestation could take eons to heal; or
B) shift themselves and their people to other physical planes; but they'd be spread across many worlds, there'd be no guarantee of reuniting the Empire, and survival of any particular imperial shard would be uncertain.

The Gods decided on B and sundered the Empire of the Albans.
Most of the lands of Cyrnow and Dewnann ended up together and their remaining Gods congregated to form the New Co-Albanates of Cyrnow & Dewnann (Kes-Albanethow Nowidh Cyrnow ha Dewnann)
The Flag is merging of the similar Cyrnish and Dewnant flags, with their intricate knot, around the central symbol of the Imperial Alban Knot.
Note that the hoist is on the right representing the movement of the flag when carried.

FLAG CHALLENGE #121

Apocalypse Won

"And lo, did Armageddon come forth.
The Gates of Heaven & Hell were opened and the unearthly plagued the world once more.
Armies of Angels and Demons rode out against the children of Man...and lost"

It has been centuries since the apocalypse and whilst nations have fallen, humanity as survived by coopting the supernatural.

Replacement Challenge...

FLAG CHALLENGE #121: ARW2 Eclectic Boogaloo

The Stuart Succession in Britain went slightly different and as such the colonies in North America were consolidated into Royal Dominions.
However revolutionary fervour was merely delayed until c1800.
Your challenge is to design a flag for either a resultant independent polity in North America or a remaining Dominion.
Said states cannot cover all NA or match OTL NA states nor can the flags be based on OTL Grand Union or Stars & Stripes

FLAG CHALLENGE #122: Beyond Earth

Humanity has finally managed to transcend the proverbial cradle of our genesis, and escaped to the stars. We thought we would leave earthly conflicts behind in this new world. But the long distance, and lack of Faster-than-Light travel led to the colonies having essential independence. The colonists sought to create flags of their new colonies. Your challenge is to design one of these flags

I won with this bland entry:
Nyhavn aka NewHaven

Nyhavn is the Planet and Settlement of ColonyArkShip3.
It is primarily formed of people of Scandinavian descent though Irish, Baltic, and Japanese minorities exist.
Politically it can be said to be a parliamentary republic though quirks of development the Head of State Archon occasionally acts presidentially

Kuld von Reyn has 123
It's been a while since I entered one of these, but I felt inspired and decided to give it a go.

The City of Miracles
"Far beneath the waves of the eastern Mediterranean lies an underwater city, long lost to history. To modern eyes it would appear to have been built and populated by a highly advanced race of people. Its high technology, in many cases indistinguishable from magic, certainly suggests as much. This is in stark contrast to the humans inhabiting it, however. They live simple lives, venerating the wonders of the city as if they were gifts from the gods rather than the fruits of advanced science. Indeed, they hardly seem to have a concept of science to begin with, and attempting to understand the "City of Miracles" is seen as offensive at best and blasphemous at worst.

If asked who built the city, the locals would likely answer "The Gods" without hesitation. If asked who "The Gods" are supposed to be, the local would not only be able to name all nine members of their pantheon, but also show you the Gods themselves. In each of the eight "arms" of the city, and right in the center of it, you can find a large white building. If you were to enter one of these buildings, you would find a large glass tank, filled with an unidentified liquid, housing an outlandish creature that can best be described as a large eye with eight white tentacles extending from it. It doesn't speak, and it doesn't even seem to be capable of thought. Nonetheless, any who enter these temples feel as if they're being watched. The beings only move to observe, and they only observe humans. All other animals are ignored entirely.

While the origins of the city will likely remain a mystery for the foreseeable future, the origins of the flag proudly displayed by the people inhabiting it becomes clear after touring it. A single eye, eight white tentacles protruding from it, forever observing those who would venerate it as a god."

We look forward to your challenge.
(or at least what you challenge was when I'm back from hols :D)

A twist on a recent suggestion in the discussion thread.

FLAG CHALLENGE 124: Senātus Populusque Rōmānus
Most of the polities claiming to be the "heirs of Rome" historically were mainly concerned with the legacy of Imperial Rome and its emperors. The old republican traditions were largely forgotten or ignored in favor of the memory of Caesar.

The challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to design a flag for a state that not only claims to be the heir of Rome, but also maintains republican traditions similar (if only on paper) to those of the old Roman Republic. The PoD, location of the state in question and which Rome to use is up to you. The state can contain Italy, but can't originate from there.

Laqueesha has won flag challenge 124!

Flag of the Federal Roman Democratic Republic (FRDR)

The flag has two colors, two stripes, and two stars, as the number two is a recurring motif in FRDR heraldry, symbolizing the eastern and western Roman empires, as well as the senate and people of Rome. The FRDR is a secular federalized presidential republic with a bicameral legislature and controls territory in OTL Italy, the Balkans, and Turkey. This particular flag was adopted in 1912. The current FRDR constitution was ratified in 1996.
