...and I thought about how someone described LaRouche as 'the demon love-child between the New Deal and Operation Plowshare, on meth' and, well, the combination appealed to me.

This is also meant to be slightly silly and mostly just for funsies.

One of the better descriptions of LaRouche that I've heard. Slightly silly, gotcha. :)

A Minor Meighen Majority

Here's 1973:

The Conservatives, in an upset, chose Ontario cabinet minister Alan Eagleson as party leader at the December 1970 leadership convention, following a heated race that included Davie Fulton, Dalton Camp, Robert Stanfield, and Claude Wagner. Eagleson won largely on a campaign of "change and renewal," despite some concerns that, much like George Hees before him, he lacked substance and would be seen as inexperienced.

The CCF, meanwhile, split into two following complaints from the left-wing that the party had moved too close to the centre of the political spectrum. In response to this, party activist James Laxer announced that he would challenge the leadership of David Lewis at the party's annual convention. Following Lewis' victory, however, Laxer announced that he was leaving the party to form the "Social Democratic Party of Canada," a party he called "the only real voice for the left in this country." Laxer managed to convince a few CCF MPs to follow him, and the party looked set to win a handful of seats come the election.

By the time the election was called, the Conservatives were favoured to win. The centre-left/left of the political spectrum was divided across three parties, with the governing Liberals under Prime Minister James Sinclair increasingly being seen as a tired government. Meanwhile, Eagleson's leadership, while at times controversial, had reinvigorated the Conservatives, and polls began to show the party headed to victory.

1973.png

Indeed, this is just what happened on election night. Eagleson's Tories managed to pull off a majority government, including winning a handful of seats in Quebec, despite the continued Liberal dominance of the province. While the CCF managed to pick up a few seats in Western Canada from the Liberals, they were hurt in urban areas of the country, particularly Toronto, where David Lewis himself lost his seat to the Social Democratic candidate, leading to his resignation as CCF leader. The Social Democrats made an impressive breakthrough into the House of Commons, winning 11 seats, but not enough to earn official party status. James Sinclair, meanwhile, resigned as National Liberal leader shortly after the election, though he would play a major role in the selection of his successor.

So all but one party leader holds or held seats in Toronto ridings? I'm sure westerners of all stripes are happy with that development. Also, what's the situation in Quebec like ITTL? We're past the OTL date of the October Crisis, so it seems likely that something should be happening there.

Let's just hope Eagleson's fate doesn't turn out like OTL. Fantastic work by the way :D

Well, for better or worse his fate will be different, that's for sure.

So all but one party leader holds or held seats in Toronto ridings? I'm sure westerners of all stripes are happy with that development. Also, what's the situation in Quebec like ITTL? We're past the OTL date of the October Crisis, so it seems likely that something should be happening there.

Westerners weren't exactly thrilled, but it helped that the Prime Minister for the last 8 years hailed from the west. And besides Lewis, the CCF is for the most part an exclusively western party. That said, had their been a "Reform-esque" party at around this time they would've had a decent chance to win some seats.

As for Quebec, it's basically proceeded the same way as IRL, except the Quiet Revolution happens under Gerard Cournoyer instead of Jean Lesage (who instead chooses to remain in federal politics). The October Crisis is handled much better (at least in terms of public opinion) than IRL, as Sinclair chooses not to invoke the War Measures Act, figuring the political risk of doing so outweighs its potential benefits.

Red, Green, and Blue

The poor economy that President Reagan inherited had seemingly doomed "Sunny Ronny" as he attempted to enact the economy platform he ran on. In 1982, the Republicans took a beating as a result of Reagan's controversial economy programs, including deregulation of several industries and his generous tax cuts, which critics said favored the wealthy.

The foreign policy sphere was Reagan's only solace in his first part of his term. The Soviets soon bit off more than they could chew in Balochistan, and India, formerly Soviet-leaning, turned decidedly against the USSR as a result of the massive economic disturbance and refugee influx caused by the invasion. Reagan wisely withheld American involvement from the Middle Eastern conflicts despite pleas from most governments in the region, and focused instead on cracking down on anti-communist insurgencies in the Third World.

Reagan was prepared to run as a foreign policy hero until the economy began a miraculous comeback in 1983. By 1984, Reagan's approval ratings were at nearly 60% and the opposition parties knew their work was cut out for them, even as it became clear that a majority of the economic gains of the good economy were going to upper-middle class and richer Americans and largely not coming down to the rest.

President Brown, despite the urging of some supporters, declined to run for another term and the party eventually turned to his former Secretary of State, Walter Mondale. Mondale's campaign attempted to inject enthusiasm into the race by selecting New York Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro, making her the first woman on a major party ticket. The Democrats stuck with John Anderson, and Anderson chose recent party-switcher Connecticut Senator Lowell Weicker as his running-mate.

The election was always Reagan's to lose and between the poor Mondale campaign (Ferrarro's husband soon became under suspicion for shady real estate deals and Mondale himself was a boring, unappealing speaker) and the soaring economy, Reagan won a crushing victory that set the record for most electoral votes won in a single election.

The Democrats ended up in second place in the Electoral College, with Anderson taking nearly all of New England. Mondale's campaign failed to win any states, only taking the solidly Progressive District of Columbia, making it the worst electoral showing in party history.

But the October Crisis does still happen? Isn't that a bit convergent?

It's a fair bit convergent, but frankly even with my POD being in the 1920s, I don't think it's that unlikely. Most Quebec elections IRL from my POD up until the 1960s were pretty well landslide victories, and weren't exactly influenced by federal politics. With this in mind, the 1960s (in my opinion, that is) still seems like a likely time for the Quiet Revolution to occur, as well as the simultaneous rise of the FLQ (or a similar organization).

That said, I wouldn't say it's exactly the same as IRL. Not necessarily the same dates, same people involved, etc., but what does stay the same is that the FLQ (or, again, a similar organization) increasingly escalates its actions, leading to a period where the government is forced to crack down hard. In this case, it works out better for Sinclair than it did for Trudeau.

Heading into the 2145 Xanadu premier election, incumbent Premier John Lyman Sears was extraordinarily popular. A Democratic-controlled Legislature and AFL-CIO-controlled Commonwealth Planning Commission easily passed Sears's agenda. Still riding high on sympathy from the 2137 Sexual Revolution, Sears pushed through the 2142 Voting Rights Act, ensuring voting rights for hundreds of thousands of female centaurs while also restricting voting rights for thousands of male centaurs. Welfare programs and public housing was expanded to accomate a growing population, and the education budget was greatly expanded. Sears also pushed for massive government infrastructure programs, using his influence with the federal Democratic Party to secure additional federal funding. Thirteen new nuclear plants were licensed during his first term and millions of dollars were allocated for rural electricity and air mail service. The Xanadu Interstate Highway Act of 2144 called for the construction of an additional 15,000 miles of paved highways in central Xanadu in ten years, with an ultimate goal of 40,000 miles by 2169.

Sears was incredibly popular heading into his reelection campaign. Unemployment had hit 20 year lows and the budget defecit was shrinking (Sears had raised the tax rates for the highest income brackets and had closed several tax loopholes). Former Chiron State Senator Tim Cohen attempted to primary Sears from the far-right, campaigning on a racist, segregationist campaign, but he was handidly defeated. Governor Hyale King of Barasses had been mentioned as a potential challenger to Sears, but she declined, instead decidnig to focus on state politics in Barasses. Jack Sears and Alf Butler were eventually renominated by acclamation at the convention, where his name was motioned by Governor King.

Due to Sears's popularity and record-breaking campaign warchest (his $350 million at the time of the conventions was a record for an Outer System election), many prominent Republicans like former Deputy Premier Benton J. Porter and Commonwealth Senators Bobbi Riker of Sagittarius and Eliza Gaul of Geronimo declined to run. Instead, the nomination quickly became a race between Marrasos State Senator Laura MCkenna, former U.S. Representative Raul Manning of Thubbes and business executive Blake Gilbert of Sagittarius. The three of them exchanged leads early, neither of them able to pull ahead. Gilbet was supported by the moderate financial interests, Manning was a small government social liberal and McKenna ran on a right-wing populist platform. McKenna's populism managed to win over large segments of human settlers still uncertain about centaur civil rights, but Gilbert and Manning were able to win over the party bosses going into the convention. All three candidates were deadlocked heading into the convention. But dual scandals hit Gilbert and Manning. Gilbert was forced to step down after it was revealed that he'd donated more than $500,000 to the Sears campaign in 2141 through a super PAC, and Manning took a serious blow after newspapers published first hand accounts and pictures of him using prostitutes. McKenna secured the nomination on the first ballot. She chose Khan City Council Member Julianne Briles as her running mate. Briles had previously been the running mate for Sweeney Hull's independent run in 2133.

McKenna had great difficulty gaining traction over Sears in the general election. As with prominent politicians, large Republican fundraisers and donors sat on the sideline, unhappy with the McKenna/Briles ticket and unwilling to waste money on a Quioxtic campaign. McKenna took part in a whistlestop tour of Xanadu, attacking the corruption and big spending of the Sears campaign, and also attacking him for supporting ethnic special interest groups. Sears made few public campaign apperances, instead relying on surrogates, media advertisements and a groundbreaking get out of the vote vampaign to drum up support from female centaurs. McKenna had little support amongst centaurs due to her vocal opposition to Equalis subsidies. Just weeks head of the election, at a town hall event with supporters (Sears and McKenna never debated), McKenna called Sears a "no-good derbyfucker" who was supported by "pillwhores and scaremongers who want to guilt you into paying for alien birth control". What support McKenna had quickly evaporated. Turnout was the lowest it'd been in years, particullarly amongst Republicans as Sears easily crushed McKenna.

The 2147 Barasses gubernatorial election was the third gubernatorial election in post-statehood Barasses. Incumbent Governor Hyale King had had a tumultous first term as governor. She wielded great power over the State Legislature early on, pushing through education reform bills, adult literacy programs (it was estimated that barely a fifth of adult female centaurs could read) and public works programs to build roads, bridges, hospitals, schools and parks. She was charistmatic and popular with the population and she wasn't afraid to walk the floors of the State Legislature to bully and berate opponents into supporting her meassures (at 7'3" and 1400 pounds, she was large even for a centaur, with a forceful and open personality).

In 2144, King attempted to regulate and nationalize the state's expansive water mining operations. This was meat with fierce opposition, particularly from members of her family, who's wealth deerived from water mining. Several members of the Legislature moved to impeach King on grounds of abuse of power, corruption and bribery. King attempted to recess the Legislature, but the attempt was blocked by the State Supreme Court. King then went on a state-wide speaking tour to shore up support amongst the people, and also bullied many legislators into voting against legislation. Support for impeachment collapsed, but King carried a grudge against most of her family. She stripped many of them of state jobs, along with family members of their supporters. State legislators who'd supported legislation saw state and commonwealth funding withheld and faced primary challenges in 2145.

The State Legislature supported King's nationalization of the water system, but she was met by fierce opposition from land owners. She called out the State National Guard to force the nationalization. King also used the National Guard and local Minutemen units for a variety of tasks, ranging from policing ticket sales at University of Barasses football games to protecting water wells to arresting opposition law makers. King was a polarizing figure, hailed and supported for her populist appeal and support of the poor, but was widely criticized for what many saw as dictatorial tactics. Her loudest critic was her own Liuentenant Governor, Menalesid Blackman, whom King believed had been behind the attempts to impeach her. Blackman was in turn investigated by the federal DoJ for improver use of campaign funds. She refused to step down, but she was largely isolated by King.

Due to Democratic dominance in Barasses, the Democratic primary was paramount to election. King was quite popular with the general population, but still faced a stiff challenger in former State Representative Amixis King, a niece of H. King who had been one of the leading voices for impeachment but had lost her seat in 2145 to a governor-alligned primary challenger. A. King ran against H. King, accusing her of being a corrupt dictator. While she had the support of business interests and most of their family, A. King lost handidly to H. King. After the primary battle, Hyale King dumped Blackman from the ticket and instead named Commonwealth Representative Nitalope Hill as her running mate. The Republicans failed to nominate a candidate for governor, and King faced only a smattering of independent and write-in candidates. She easily won reelection in the general election with more than 95% of the vote with poor turnout.

Oh, Branada - Chapter 1
Brazil like the Canadian politics

In 1988, President José Sarney, with low popularity indices, launches elections for the post of Prime Minister and cancels the referendum of 1993.

The three major parties, Labour launches Brizola, Democratic launches Mário Covas and the New Democratic launches Ulysses Guimarães. Covas, was elected with a small majority and took office on 22 November.

One of the most controversial facts of Covas government was the privatization of Eletrobras in 1989. Also, there was the Cruzeiro Real Plan in 1991, which managed to stabilize the economy.

In 1992, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay have created Mercosur. In the following year, Covas resigned after discovering a cancer in the bladder, left the government to his minister of planning, Yeda Crusius in June 1993.

If I follow your stories right, this is more or less like Rand Paul or somebody calling Clinton a 'niggerlover' and her supporters 'sluts and whores', in the terminology of JND?

Basically. It'll get certain parts of the base all riled up, but it's generally going to look real bad to most other people.

It's also probably not something you'd say unless you were incredibly tired and frustrated and losing by fifteen points to a guy with ten times as much money as you, too.

Very true. Her campaign used a lot of coded language and dog whistle (they'd entered the Atwaterian point where they couldn't say "derby derby derby" and expect to win). But by that point in the campaign, she was close to spent and it just slipped.

The Xanadu Republicans were reeling going into the 2149 Xanadu premier election. Their candidate for premier in 2145, Laura McKenna, had been an embarassment to the party. She was defeated handidly by Premier John Lyman Sears and managed to destroy any sort of goodwill the Republican Party had with female centaurs. In the 2147 midterms, the Democrats continued to make gains. Heading into 2149, U.S. President and Democrat Elijah V. Crosby said that Sears was making the Democrats the natural party of government for Xanadu. This comment was widely repeated, and haunted Xanadu Republicans as they looked to defeat Sears and his New Day agenda in his quest for a third term as Premier of Xanadu.

The Republican Party narrowed in on Dr. Bryan C. Condon, who was most famous for leading the Equalis research time. He was widely regarded as one of the foremost experts on Xanadu centaurs and had good relations with many prominent centaur leaders. While he was liberal to moderate on many social issues, he was also a small government conservative who was opposed to Sears's New Day agenda, believing it to be an overreach of government power. Condon took some convincing to run, but when he declared that he was running, he managed to clear the field. While some Republicans were critical of Condon's lack of political experience, he named Commonwealth Senator Eliza Gaul of Geronimo as his running mate to make up for it. Condon ran on the standard moderate Republican platform of good governance, anti-corruption, small government, streamlined services and support for American business. He ran far from the right-wing platform of Laura McKenna in an attempt to build support for the Republican Party amongst minority voters.

Sears's decision to run for a third term wasn't without controversey. There had been some thought that maybe he would be challenged for the nomination. Barasses Governor Hyale King was considered the most likely alternative, but any attempt at a centaur winning the Democratic nomination was a pipedream. Sears ran for the nomination without opposition, and he retained Alf Butler as his running mate, though there'd been pressure to dump him and replace him with someone else--like Hyale King. King was an opponent of Sears's, believing that the New Day agenda didn't go nearly far enough in terms of welfare, education reform, job programs and civil rights. But she still supported Sears against Condon, though her support seemed rather forced and not entirely sincere.

The Condon campaign managed a better job at raising funds than the previous Ordonez and McKenna campaigns. He had backing from prominent Republican donors on Titan and offworld. He still had connections with the financial and business leaders on Earth during his years with Vitadyne Life Sciences and Johns Hopkins School of Xenobiology. While he wasn't able to outraise the Sears campaign, he was able to make the gap smaller and less pronounced. He ran a tighter, more efficient campaign than either Ordonez and McKenna. Despite his own close connections to the cetaur community, he had trouble attracting support amongst them. The Republicans had done long lasting damage in the previous elections, and the centuar vote was likely out of reach for a generation, if not longer. Despite his advantages over the failed Ordonez and McKenna campaign, a common complaint against Condon was they he was boring and his performances in debates was widely panned as wooden and stilted, even if he did make good points and debated soundly. His campaign took a minor hit when it was revealed that he had voluntarily entered a psychiatric clinic in 2137 during the Sexual Revolution after he suffered a significant nervous breakdown while doing fieldwork for the Minutemen's Office of Public Health. The Sears campaign declined to make it an issue, instead calling Condon "a real American for sacrificing so much for his country and its people". However, his favorability numbers took a hit, but did manage to gain some sympathy votes from female centaurs who were appreciative of the sacrifices he'd made for them.

The final campaign saw higher turnout than 2145, but still lower than previous elections. The election was also closer, as Condon was able to gain more support from liberals and moderates opposed to the Sears's administration's overreach. He was also able to gain modest support from centaurs who still looked at him as a friend and supporter. Sears won reeleciton to a third term by 7 points, though his majorities in the Commonwealth Legislature was greatly reduced.

Calling herself a lame duck because she was term limited, Hyale King looked to make the most of her last term as Governor before the 2151 Barasses gubernatorial election. Passing her agenda would be much easier since the State Legislature was now filled with loyalists. Opponents had been picked off in the 2147 and 2149 elections, and those still opposed to her rule found themselves largely ostracized. King was able to take a less confrontational approach to governance. She focused largely on education reform and infrastructure expansion in her second term. She based her agenda partly off of Sears's New Day agenda, completely subsidizing Equalis, offering single-payer health care and a minimum guaranteed income, paid for by the new state-run water corporations.

Despite a legislature packed with loyalists, there was still opposition to King and her agenda. Many newspapers and banks were opposed to her, and attempted to hinder her agenda through the Barasses Chamber of Commerce, which was largely neutered by the State Planning Commission and the Legislature. When the State Supreme Court ruled against a recess appointment she made, she issued an executive order requiring a mandatory retirement age for state judges, forcing half the court off the bech. The executive order was later ruled unconstitutional by the Xanadu Supreme Court, but by then, King had secured the state judiciary. King harbored further ambitions, but she knew that a run for Premier of Xanadu would be Quiotix and she'd lose handidly. She contemplated a run for the U.S. Senate in 2152, but she wouldn't even get the chance to finish her term as governor.

Hyale King was killed in January 2151 by her husband, Jacoby Hoyt, a human. His motivation for the murder remains a mysterty, as he committed suicide shortly afterwards and left no note. Hoyt killed King during a private dinner in the Governor's Mansion. Servants reported that nothing had seemed out of the ordinary leading up to the murder-suicide. King's other spouse, her wife Calla Kearse (a centaur) was out of state at that time, serving as a visiting professor at the University of Shangri-La's Department of English Literature and Creative Writing. After King's death, Lieutenant Governor Nitalope Hill succeeded her as governor.

The King political machine, which had been codified as the People's Democratic Political Conference (PDPC) was in chaos, as King had not yet named a successor before her death and there was no obvious succesor. Hill sought to replace King, but she wasn't very popular with other leaders in the PDPC, since she was seen as wooden and abbrassive. House Majority Whip Euphyra West quickly emerged as a contender to replace King. Like King, West was tall, charismatic and forceful. She'd become a strong ally of King in the House and had helped force through King's agenda. She had the backing of PDPC legislators and was quickly endorsed by many PDPC-aligned newspapers and radio stations.

However, West's path to the nomination wasn't easy. Nitalope Hill split from the PDPC, hoping to win the nomination on her own. Former Governor Nechiore King, who'd lost to Hyale King in the 2143 Democratic runoff, also declared that she would be running. State Representative Kyle Bricker also declared, becoming the first human to run for the Democratic nomination. A three-way race emerged between West, King and Bricker, while Hill fell to the side with no obvious power base to draw from. West had the backing of the People's Democratic Political Conference, King was supported by opponents of her late half-sister and Bricker was supported by humans and orcs who felt disenfranchised from the centaur-dominated Barasses Democratic Party. In the first round, West won a plurality of votes, with Bricker and King finishing in a tight race for second. Bricker managed to just barely edge out King after three recounts.

West and Bricker moved onto the runoff. Bricker's second-place finish was controversial. Opponents of Hyale King and Euphyra West were angry at a human defeating Nechiore King and making it to the runoff, leaving them confused. The short campaign until the runoff was dirty as both sides played the race card to drum up support. Nechiore King and Nitalope Hill reluctantly endorsed West in the runoff. West managed to defeat Bricker handidly with their support.

kWR4pcU.png

Emboldened by Condon's massive increase in support in the 2149 premier election, Republicans were optimistic that they could crack double digits against West. The Republicans quickly nominated attorney and entreprenuer Myra Gordon for governor. Gordon was a centaur originally from Thubbes who had moved to Barasses after the Sexual Revolution as an investigator for the U.S. government. Gordon faced a steep battle because of the letter after her name, but she fought hard against the corruption of the King and Hill administrations and how West would just be a continuation of that. As predicted, Euphyra West won an easy victory over Myra Gordon, but Gordon set records for a Republican candidate in Barasses, encouraging the federal and commonwealth Republican Parties to invest in the state's future.
