Ok, here is the post-Soviet World around 2033. The Soviet Union is now gone and the former territory is in tatters. Here's why.
In 2016, Persia, after years of incompetent leaderships and coups, finally descends into a bloody Civil War, with communists seizing control of Tehran for a time. The Soviets claim that hte Communists are the legitimate government, but when the Provisional government refuses, they declare war, leading to a very costly situation. Their allies Afghanistan and Kashmir withdraw in disgust, and the Soviets than attempt to attack them to bring them back into the Sphere of Influence. The Americans fund the seperatists and Persian main government. For 3 years, this conflict drags on at an intense level, until the Soviets are forced to withdraw completely. This drains their economy and leads to thousands of soldier deaths, even involving a little purge of the military for their incompetence. But things only get worse.

A Mutual concern for both Moscow and Washington is the Chinese regime, which has grown increasingly aggressive. In May 2021, border dispute breaks out with Manchuria, leading to the Chinese invading and launching a nuclear missile at Harbin. Over 800,000 are killed in the blast. The Soviets declare war as well, and soon the Americans are dragged in too, as the war threatens to disrupt the whole balance of power in Asia, and the Americans are not willing to let that happen. The War in China is costly on a great scale, lasting about 2 years, and yet costing more lives than WW2 combined. Multiple nuclear weapons are fired from both sides, causing millions of deaths in Siberia and the West Coast of America. Economies are crippled in both these countries, with their nuclear arsenals being blasted onto the Chinese. Of course, China is collapsed and a series of Warlords once again come to power. The Soviets are too exhausted for any more, and the Americans step in and sponsor a Nationalist government, which although is still harsh, is much more preferable to the previous Maoist one. Still, vast areas remain in chaos thanks to warlord ism and nuclear radiation, so the regime remains unstable.

The debts of the Soviet Union continue to climb after this catastrophic war, though only a few European Cities were nuked, the Siberian part was decimated. The Military spending soured as well. In America, a new President was elected, Jerry McCarpenter, a very right wing and anti-communist leader, wishing to put down the catastrophe that had occurred in the destruction of San Francisco, Seattle and several smaller locations by Chinese Missiles. He actively denounced the communist regimes, causing further dissidence. The satellites began ceding. In the 8th of January 2024, after over 80 years of separation, the 3 Germanies were finally reunited into the Greater German Republic. The next event to occur was the secession of Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and hte Balkan states, all at once in the Valentines Secession. The Overthrow of communist dictators occurred in Romania, Bulgaria, Angola and Ethiopia. Ethiopia fell into chaos starting with the secession of a Maoist Somalia, which surprisingly is quite stable compared to its neighbours. Yet more secessionists started protesting in the Soviet Union itself, including an even greater number than OTL due to both the increased territory and the worse economic situation.

The straw that broke the camel's back was the collapse of Scandinavia, with Stolkholm kicking out the communist and outlawing them, while Denmark declared independence too. Only Norway remained communist, and even then, it was promoting Norwegian Nationalism now. This caused Finnish rebellions in the Far North, leading the Baltics to declare independence. A Coup came to Moscow, with popular support from a discontent people, announcing the end of the Soviet Union in the 5th of July 2031, 110 years after the Soviet Union first formed, in an incredible irony. This was met with popular support, and many different nations ceded from the Union, while loyalist communists fought a Second Civil War. This one is ironically the opposite of the First, where White forces were seizing power and once again bringing Russia out of the Communist REvolution. Many Ethnic groups made their own nations in the Caucasus and Central Asia, even including a homeland for the Ingrian people (that little bit of land near St Petersburg is not Finnish but Ingria set up by the Finnish. It is similar in size to Luxembourg. In Former *Kaliningrad, a coalition German nationalists and neo-Nazis seized power and declared the 'National Kingdom of Prussia', with the leader crowning himself King-Fuhrer. Mongolia and Xinjiang allied with the ravaged Manchuria, forming a trade agreement as a buffer between Russia and China. Korea set up a democratic government, but with the communist party still having a significant role in elections (the reason Korea is so much better is that Kim Il Sung was killed in the war as a butterfly). Russia still faces several rebel groups, mainly communists, secessionists and even a Kamkatchan Warlord, backed by Manchuria who has declared himself Khan out of madness. The remaining communist nations are crippled economically and have become increasingly wishing to reform and liberalise to keep up their trading. The only exception is Everyman's Spartacist Republic of Thrace, which continues as ever, being extremely inward looking, paranoid and dangerous to live in. In fact, they are busy celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the Glorious Generalissimo, Chief Philosopher, Great Liberator and Master in Perpetuality Kratos (his real first name has been lost to history by this point) 'liberating' Greece from Nazi Oppression (in reality Northern Greece was liberated in October 1944 with some mild Soviet assistance, and was awarded most of Thrace from Turkey, similar to the First Balkan War, before Civil War broke out with the American backed South, leading to its secession). He and his great grandson Nikolai are practically worshipped as gods in this regime, combining a mix of OTL Juche with Political Platonism, Ancient Spartan Policy (they are encouraged to abandon sick babies and elderly to die), and even a drop of Khmer every now and then. With the fall of Russia, a new threat emerged. The National Arab Republic saw its chance, launching a full scale invasion of both Saudi Arabia and Kurdistan, thinking the other nations would not be capable of stopping it. It launches several missiles at Israel, Cairo and Tehran, while launching a 'blitzkrieg' like attack on the Arab nations, wishing to integrate them as part of an Arab-only Caliphate. The Americans have just began an invasion of this terrifyingly aggressive, genocidal nation.
It is now 2032, and the Revolution may finally be over.

No future tl is complete without the Randomid Caliphate

Well, it's not a caliphate in practise, more in nickname. It was founded by a figure similar to Zarqawi, so imagine a combination of Taliban religiosity and Nazi like racial policy (ie only Arab Sunnis are worthy of life). A pretty horrible place to live.

Islamic Evil Empire, then. Future Randomid Caliphates are usually pretty unpleasant places. (Hmm. Someone needs to write a future SF story in which an Islamicized Europe are the good guys, just to make people's heads explode. :D )

OK, this one is taken from one of the scenarios here by Goliath: http://goliath-maps.deviantart.com/art/Travel-Guides-2-415052910 .

It's an ASB scenario in which history proceeds pretty close to OTL until the day one Cristoforo Colombo sails west and fails to arrive anywhere. Stuff happens. The lack of American silver leads to an early fall of Habsburg power, Portugal benefits, the development of European modernity is delayed, an alternate *Protestant revolution takes place and leaves Poland and almost of Germany *Protestant while Scandinavia and the British isles take part in a split in the Catholic Church proper: large-scale colonization never really becomes a European habit in a world lacking in areas for settler colonies or an American example. The lack of American silver also does weird things to the East Asian economy and Ming history. Europe never becomes as dominant.

A Great War in the 1930s pits a Japan which never closed off and an early-developing Russia and their various little buddies against a coalition which, through late-German levels of diplomatic incompetence on the Russian-Japanese side, ends up drawing most of the world. Russian and Japanese empires are ruthlessly broken up.

Today, the world is generally at peace, with limited monarchy or bureaucratic technocracy of anti-ideological mode being the dominant forms of government. Atomic power has been developed recently, it's peacetime origins making it much more popular as the "energy of the future": there's a bit of an optimistic atompunk feel about things, albeit with some worries about whether the Chinese will end up as a true global hegemon. There are worries about food security and resource limits: without the Americas and their valuable plants, Europe has had more trouble feeding itself, and agriculture is more intensive and more "urbanized" ("vertical farms" have been in existence for a long time) than OTL, although some pressure is taken off by a more developed Middle East and Africa better able to feed themselves (and in parts of Africa, actually exporting quite a bit of food).

And of course, scientists remain puzzled by how the Lost Continents: did they, in fact, sink? The seafloor dredging (now helped by the first deep Bathyscaphes) seems conclusive, but no mechanism is known, and why didn't the overall sea level change? Many ascribe the event to divine intervention and populate the Lost Continents with all sorts of evil imagined civilizations, some positively Green Antarctican: others suspect the intervention of Alien(Space Bats)s.

I agree that this ATL scenario might work better for the Byzantines than OTL did.
It's not the first time they loose the most of the Balkan: the Slavs settled there already several centuries earlier.
Anatolia was also more important than the Balkans in this time for the ERE, that means they are stronger than compared to OTL.

The Seljuks might be pretty weak in the long run. They need to focus either on the Balkan or the steppes. These are two very different areas and I think that they would prefer the Balkan in the end. The problem is that they will end up surrounded by christian nations.

Might be interesting to see a map 100years later. I imagine the Norman king of Sicily riding trough the gates of Sirmium to be crowned King of the Bulgars, Hungarians, Slavs and Turks ;)
Very astute analysis. I'll have to take that into account when I do that sequel to this. :D

Anyways, I was actually thinking there might by 2 or 3 "Seljuk" states (having the same dynasty and broadly the same ethnic groups, but independent from each other). One in the Balkans, one in the Ukraine and one in the Steppes/Caucus. Probably leaning towards the latter.

So here is a little sample of something that I've been wanting to do since September. I haven't gotten around to even starting it until now because Korea and Work. But now that I'm living in Vegas I can provide you with this little teaser. Take a guess what it is if you'd like! :D

Challenge accepted. Just give me some days.

Something about languages/dialects?

If you plan any more of this world, I have got a good idea: What about Novaya Zemlya as Russia's reverse Taiwan, or the Arctic Sea islands in general? Interesting idea?

How is an international pariah state going to surive on a island where it always snows and has no more than 1000 people?
