Weekly Flag Challenge: New Challenges & Previous Winners

FLAG CHALLENGE 83

ASB Unions set
For this challenge, you will make a collection of 6 flags of unions that would never possibly happen.

The unions are as such:
1. Hungary-Romania (19th - 20th century)
2. Balkan federation under Bulgarian suzerainty (20th century)
3. Pan-Fennic union (19th century - modern day)
4. Pan-Turan union (Time of your choosing)
5. United Kingdom of France, Italy and the Rheinland (Time of your choosing)
6. Holy Union of Malta, Rhodes and Cyprus. (Time of your choosing)

Notes
- The borders of the Pan-Fennic union can be of your choosing, but must contain all of greater Finland.
Suur-Suomen_kartta.png

- The Pan-Turan union must contain Turkey and all the Central-Asian Turkic nations. Other than that, you are free to dictate borders.
-The United Kingdom must have all of what is now modern day France, Italy and all the Rheinland. No more land in Germany, but other than that, I'll give you some leeway.
-Balkan Federation must have these borders, but not necessarily the same constituent nations.

Enjoy! And make sure to stick to the standard size that I believe has been previously determined in this thread.

The winner of this challenge is RomanNumeralII, with this entry.

The Dual Monarchy of Hungary and Romania - Founded in the ashes of the former Austria-Bohemia, this nation, more commonly known as Hungary-Romania or the Dual Monarchy, is a rather loose union between its two constituent nations. The top three bands represent Hungary; the bottom three, Romania, and the large blue band between them represents the Danube River that links them together. The CoAs are Hungary's and Romania's respective CoAs.

The Balkan Federation - Originally created in the peace treaty between Russia and the Ottoman Empire after the Turks' humiliating loss during the Slavic revolts (the Russians intervened). The fifteen stars represent the fifteen constituent nations of the federation: Bulgaria, Moldovia, Transylvania, Wallachia, Albania, Slovenia, Croatia, Dalmatia, Bosnia, Vojvodina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece, and Kosovo. The white, red, and green represent Bulgaria, the head of the Federation, while the white, red, and blue represent the other Slavic nations. The white and blue represent Greece.

The United Kingdom of Finland and Estonia - This nation was created in the late 1800s with the union of former Finland and Estonia. The government is modelled after that of Great Britain. As such, the flag incorporated the same idea of mashing together the flags of constituent nations to create the new flag. Takes the Nordic cross of Finland with the colours of the Estonian flag. Also added are two stars, the upper of which represents Finland, while the lower represents Estonia. The horizontal band in the Nordic cross also symbolizes the Gulf of Finland riding horizontally between Finland and Estonia. It is also of note that this flag is one of the few non-rectangular flags in the modern world.

Celestial Horde - Similar to OTL's Mongol hordes, the Celestial Horde is a confederation of militaristic Turkic nomads who conquered everywhere from the western parts of China in the east to the Adriatic Sea in the west. They follow Tengrism, hence the blue flag and the Tengrist symbol, as well as the name "Celestial".
xngd2x.png

United "Kingdom" of France, Italy, and the Rheinland - A monarchy only in name, with a King who is merely a figurehead. The government is closest to OTL Fascism, known ITTL as "Carolingianism". After France was humiliated in the First Great War, her economy plummeted. The French wanted revenge, against the Prussians and Italians, especially. A group of French nationalists organized as the Carolingian Party, claiming that they could help France reclaim its glory, retake its lost territories in the east and south, and punish Prussia and Italy for shaming France. After France's victory in the Second Great War, Carolingian France stretched from Bordeaux to the Rhein, and from Normandy to Sicily. The Red-White-Blue bands represent France; the Red-White-Green bands represent Italy, and the large blue band represents the mighty Rhein. The symbol, originally the monogram of Charlemagne, is the Carolingians' symbol (think OTL Swastika).

The Most Serene Republic of the Islands - Originally established by the Knights Hospitaller after the took control of the islands of Cyprus, Rhodes, and Malta, this nation has slowly transitioned from a remnant crusader state into a republic. The Knights are still the military of the country, but they no longer control the government as they used to. The flag contains the shield of the Knights Hospitaller, later adopted as the Coat of Arms in the top left, Below it are three stars representing the three capitals of the republic: Rhodes, Valletta, and Nicosia. The three white bars represent the three islands themselves, with the black bars representing the sea that surrounds each one.

Flag Challenge 84

If I Can't Have It, Neither Can You

Let's return to a single-flag challenge this time. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to design the flag of a country that is formed for one of two reasons:
1) As a buffer state between two larger powers; or,
2) As an internationally administered nation as an attempt to appease all the nations that claim the land (like the Free City of Danzig or the original plan for Jerusalem)

The flag can be from an point in the ATL, though flags from the second option would most likely have to take place after a UN-esque organization is formed. A list of countries this nation is between/is claimed by is also required. A short history is suggested, though not required.

Challenge Begins: January 2nd, 2013
Challenge Ends: January 8th, 2013
Voting Begins: January 9th, 2013

Our winner this week is Xibalba, with this entry:

Since the separation of Belgium, There have been tiresome negotiations over what to do with Brussels. Flanders considers Brussels it's capital and Wallonia would gladly form some federation of some kind (Wallo-Brux). Eventually, The European Union was handed control of the city. From the ashes of the former Brussels Capital Region, The Union installed a Council for the Capital District. The 19 Municipalities where formed into districts with their own representation within the council and a chancellor at the helm to oversee things.

Edit 2.0, got rid of my other bigger post earlier on. So consider this my official entry. Sorry for the mess!

Flag Challenge 87 : We will rise again!

It's time yet again for another exciting flag challenge. The new challenge is as such.

You will design a flag for a political party that has emerged after a nation has lost a devastating war. The political party is irredentist, but other than that all other aspects of the party and it's ideology are for you to define. The nation is of your choice as well. But the flag you are designing has to be a vexilloid, and meant as a standard used for political rallies and marches. The flag must include the motto of the party and party symbolism, whatever they may be. You may upload simply the vexilloid, or even the entire standard, like this.

For example this image, the Nazi standards in the back.

Flag Challenge 88: A new flag for a new century

Here is the new flag challenge:

Australia federated and became a nation in 1901, as a British colony with strongly pro-British attitudes and a British population, which saw itself as an extension of the mother country. The past hundred and twelve years have seen Australia change considerably, and there is a significant amount of feeling that the present flag is too... British.

Your challenge is to design a new Australian flag which could reasonably be adopted today. This is not the first time such a concept has come up: many previous designs can be seen through links here. As you're designing a flag to be adopted, it should draw heavily on existing Australian symbolism.

I realise this is more restrictive than previous challenges, and so it should be interesting to see how that affects the creative minds here. A reminder that all entries should be 300px high.

Challenge begins: Friday March 1st
Challenge ends: Friday March 8th
Voting begins: Saturday March 9th
Voting ends: Saturday March 16th

All dates in AEST (GMT+10)

Good luck!

PM him. If he won't respond, I'll set up a suggestion thread and a poll this evening.

We can also have a look at the unused options from last year's autumn crisis, when the winner also forgot to supply a topic for the following round.

The new flag challenge - #91

IMPERIUM

I’ve enjoyed Keith Laumer’s ‘Imperium’ books. As at present I am bereft of ideas for a challenge, I’m taking the easy way out and asking for a design of a flag for the Imperium – at any date from 1900 to the present.

If you’re not familiar with these books, you can get the general idea from various reviews on the internet.

Your version of the Imperium doesn’t have to be exactly as in the books (we are after all on an Alternate History site!) but should follow the main premise – a union of Germany, the UK and some Nordic/Teutonic nations etc. (feel free to add/remove a few nations).

Opening Date for Entries - immediately
Closing Date for Entries – 26 April, 12 noon British Summer Time
Voting begins – 27 April
Voting closes - 5 May, approx..12 noon BST.
