Weekly Flag Challenge: Discussion & Entries

Hey there, jkarr, I was gonna post the poll thread now. I guess you can only have one flag, so which would you like me to post?

gonan go for the dutch one (first flag)...dont think my dominion one is strong enough and the french i made cos was bored and wanted a complete set XD

Sorry for the completely off-topic interruption, but (a) it's capital, not capitol, and (b) your map shows Australia, yet it claims to show Oceania. The difference is that the latter includes New Zealand and by some accounts Papua New Guinea too ;)

a) it just the name the dutch adopted for the colony, and eventually used to term the entire continent as a whole (rather than the otl oceania), with australia being retained in english and french simply cos they wanted too (and i wanted some difference rather than having 3 countries all with australia in their name)
b) meh..what happens when you live in spain for 10 years...forget your own language..besides too late now..plus capitol still retains its orginal usuage...being the center of goverment (just in a building instead of a city)...so only difference is pickiness
...also if you want accurracy your on the wrong site

Mędzymorze

Here is my enter for 45 Flag Challenge:

Mędzymorze (Polish), Mezimoří (Czechoslovakian), Atengeren (Hungarian), Tarpjūris (Lithuanian), Întremări (Romanian), Міжморе (Ukrainian) - Central European Commerce and Military Alliance created by Marshall of Poland Józef Piłsudski contained historical lands of Poland, Lithuania, Bohemia, Hungary, Ruthenia and Romania sharing same historical and cultural background ruled once in history by Jagellonian dynasty, united once more after the years of Russo-Germanic occupation to achieve new aims of modern times.

The flag: Flag of organisation is based on standards of Upraisers of many nations during the Spring of Nations. Red colour symbolise shared in battle blood and determination, White is for pure intentions and beloved of peace. The acanthus symbolise wealth and trade and Fasces are symbols of Law, Order and Civil Liberty.

The motto: A Mari Usque Ad Mare - From Sea to Sea refers to location of Międzymorze between Baltic, Black and Adriatic Sea.

The Commonwealth of Galicia, Lithuania, Poland, & Slovakia

Background
The closing events of World War I [1] results in the Rhombist movement dedicated to preserving Eastern Europe from Russia and the Central Powers.
Lead by Marshall of Poland Józef Piłsudski its aim was the creation of the Intermarian Commonwealth stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea.
In that it failed, the Baltic States (barring Lithuania) formed their own confederation, eastern Ukraine and Byelorussia formed the Ruthenian Soviet Federation [2], Bohemia/Czechia fell into the German orbit, and Hungary was at war with Jugoslavia and Roumania.
However the fears of the Galician Republic [3] and Slovakia [4] of annexation by Hungary lead to their agreement.

The Flag
The Flag is based on the old red-white-red Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth banner and the Rhombists red-white-blue lozenge symbol.
The white stripe is further divided by red stripes (possibly to distinguish it from Austria but likely for effect).
On the blue lozenge is a fourpointed gold star to represent the 4 founding republics.

[1] Different to OTL due to different Red/White/Tsarist factions in the Russian Civil War, better German result/defeat in the West,
[2] There's more of a Ruthenian common identity in east than OTL
[3] Roughly OTL's West Ukrainian Republic but better relations with the Poles and joined by non-Soviet western Belarussians.
[4] With the Czechs getting a better deal from the Germans, the Slovaks look north

Please discuss this in the discussion thread.
Jkarr,

you can decide yourself if the independant nations will be like OTL countries like Pakistan and Myanmar, or totally ATL nations: for instance a independant South Indian country or an independant southern Tibet.

Here's my rather bland entry.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Brief History:

As India gained greater autonomy the Indian Muslim League often contemplated a full separate independence from the Hindu and Sikh states but under Sir Muhammed Iqbal's continuing influence and his moderate successors they remained part of the Indian National Congress which gained growing autonomy until final independence in 1952.

Following Indian Independence there was growing violence between muslim, hindu, and sikh nationalists that culminated in increased martial law and the estrangement of the Indian Muslim League. The assassination in 1954 of the Governor of the Northwest Province and President of the Indian Muslim League, Liaquat Ali Khan, led to a declaration of secession and independence of the NWP under the name Pakistan.

Several other regions also declared independence such as the Socialist Republic of Bengal [1] and the Tamil Republic [2] almost leading to the collapse of the Indian Union.

The Country:

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a federation consisting of the Provinces of Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir-Jammu, Pashtun or Khyberistan, Punjab, Sakastan, and Sindh, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Tribal/Frontier Regions (under federal administration).

In 1991 with the Islamic Republics of Iran [3] and Afghanistan it formed the Union of Islamic Republics which is slowly transitioning from an economic and cultural union to a political one.

The Flag:

The Pakistani flag is an adaptation of the flag of the Indian Muslim League, itself based on the Indian Union Civil Flag.
The Indian Union Civil Flag is a tricolour of Green, Saffron, and Red.
The Indian Muslim League expanded the green to 2/3 of the flag and added a crescent and star to symbolise Islam.
On independence the yellow stripe was replaced with white to signify purification, while the red symbolised martyred blood.

[1] includes Assam
[2] includes Sri Lanka
[3] a longer civil war leads to it being smaller than OTL - it consists mostly of the core Persian territories with the remaining lands under Azerbaijan, the Arab Federation [4], Kurdistan, or the Gulf Federation [5]
[4] Roughly OTL Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, less the Kurdish regions
[5] An expanded Trucial/Bahraini Coast - OTL UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Al-Hasa, and Hormuz
