charl, you can create the next challenge.

NEW CHALLENGE: Marsh 1, 2011

Design a formal flag for a surviving League of Nations. How the League of Nations came to survive rather than be replaced by the UN is up to you. Obviously the PoD has to be somewhere between 1919 and 1947.

Deadline is set for Marsh 7, 2011, at midnight GMT.

Happy vexicologing.

NEW CHALLENGE: March 15, 2011

Create a flag for the "ABC Union" (Andorra, Basque, & Catalonia) which is a nation stretching from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean Sea. It was created to act as a New Marca Hispanica between France and Spain. Unlike with the original Marca Hispanica this nation is an independent/sovereign state.

I'd like a little explanation of why the nation exists and the symbolism behind the flag.

Deadline is set for March 21, 2011, at midnight GMT.

Post entries here. https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=136905&page=29

NEW CHALLENGE: March 29, 2011

You've been commissioned to design a flag by Ælfweard IV, Bretwalda of Britain, High King of the Seven United Kingdoms of England. As you know, the Seven Kingdoms once existed alongside one another as sovereign states - Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Wessex - until each was gradually unified under one personal union. It may not have been the ideal form of government, but the 7UK has managed to do alright, fighting off Vikings, Normans, French, Dutch, Scots, and Germans over the years. Now with the "kingdoms' rights" movement finally more or less defeated and the 7UK more centralized than ever, Ælfweard wants to celebrate with a new trans-national flag for his United Kingdoms. He'd like to see something that celebrates the Seven Kingdoms, and especially the nation's strong Anglo-Saxon heritage, but he's not picky.

Deadline is Monday, April 4th.

Thank you all who voted for me!

I've combined 2 of my previous suggestions to produce

Flag Challenge 43 – More British Isles

There are 2 scenarios in this challenge for you to choose from (see map below).

Scenario A:
In the North Sea there are one or more large islands in the Dogger Bank area.
Handwaves ensure that Rome still takes Britannia and falls in the west, and that the Germanic migrations occur – this time the North Sea Islands also serve as a waypoint being settled by Angles and the East Norse (Danes) by 1050AD.

Scenario B:
In the Atlantic there are one or more large islands off Cornwall and Brittany beyond the Scilly Isles.
Handwaves ensure that Rome still takes Britannia and falls in the west, and that the Germanic migrations occur – these Celtic Isles also become part of Western Rome and are later settled by Romano-Britons during the time of the Germanic settlement of Britain.

Challenge:
Your task is to create a flag for one of these island states at any point post 1050AD detailing:

a) the name of the state
b) its “feudal” status i.e. vassal, independent, province, etc
c) its “domain” status i.e. lordship, kingdom, bishopric, republic, etc
d) the meanings of any relevant symbols
e) a brief history

The Deadline for designs is Monday 19th April 23:59 GMT (pending appeals for extension and number of entries.)

Please post your designs in the Discussion and Entries Thread.

NB – if you insist you can post a flag for each but please be clear which one is your entry to the challenge

Congratulations go to Benkarnell and Sicarius who jointly won (for Duchy of Hirland and Kingdom of Yz respectively).
Funnily enough they each did a different scenario :D

As is usual with joint winners they will divvy up the Challenge roles between them how they see fit.

Sicarius and I collaborated via PM to write the next challenge.

Flag Challenge 44 – Australia, Australie, & Australië

Create a flag for an Australian country in a world where the continent was divided among Britain, France, and the Netherlands.

The deadline for designs is Monday, May 2, 8:15 pm GMT (3:15 pm EST).

Please post your designs, questions, and comments in the Discussion and Entries Thread.

Good luck, bonne chance, & veel geluk.

Thank you, Sicarius, for that lovely introduction.

Flag Challenge 45: Międzymorze

Polish statesman and military leader Józef Piłsudski had a dream - a modern successor to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a multiethnic federation composed of Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and possibly Czechoslovakia and any other bits he might have been able to chisel off chaotic Russia through his Prometheist plan. A counter-weight to German and Russian imperialism that would make Poland the major power in Central Europe once again. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to create the flag for such a state.

Thankk you, Sicarius. This is my proposal for flag challenge #46:

When British rule on the Indian subcontinent ended in 1952 the Union of Greater India was established. The Union consisted of OTL Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Birma, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, southern Tibet, eastern Iran.

Within a couple of years however the Union fell into a permanent state of war as several parts of the realm proclaimed independance. For a few years the Union was succesfull in keeping it’s territories together with help from allied countries (Great Britain, U.S.A., Japan, Germany), but after 1966 the first of several realms actually gained independance.

Around the 1980’s the Union still survived, but was surrounded by several hostile countries which were once part of the Union itself. Only due to heavy military and financial support from Japan and Germany the Union was able to hold on to it’s core territories .

CHALLENGE:

Design a flag for the surviving Union of Greater India or for one of the other parts that became independant after 1966.
