OPTION C: THE COMMONWEALTH OF SUMMERSET
History:
The English colonization of South America started with the establishments of several companies at the beginning of the 17th century with the sole tasks of establishing settlements and starting up trade.
One of these colonies was the town of New Leicester, which was to become the most important trading haven for goods for and from Europe, Africa and even Asia.
After the unification of all territories of the different charter companies into the United West Indian Company (UWIC) around 1720, the city of New Leicester became the new capital of all the South American territories. After 34 years the UWIC was disbanded and all the territories were handed over to the Crown of England.
After the different French Wars (1767-1804) the English ceded considerable territories in South America to the French and Portuguese, but they were able to hold on to their core colonies of New Albion (capital Henrytown), Pennshire (capital Gouldinghill) and Summerset (capital New Leicester).
In the 19th century these colonies became independant Dominions within the English Empire, but retained the English Emperor as monarch.
Eventually only the Commonwealth of Summerset would hold on to tight relations with the English Empire, as the Dominions of New Albion and Pennshire would become Socialist Republics in the 20th century, denouncing the English Emperor as monarch.
Today the Commonwealth of Summerset is the economical powerhouse of South-America and politically it is slowly coming out of England’s shadow, as it is gaining more and more prestige on the global political theatre.
Description:
The official state flag of Summerset is a combination of the flag of the English Empire and it’s own civil flag. This civil flag has a green border and a green cross (of Saint Lazarus) with in the middle the minor Coat of Arms of Summerset.
Symbolism:
Green cross of Summerset: Stands for the Saint Lazarus’ Cross in acknowledgment of the Serene Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of the Holy Lands, who was crucial for the survival of the early settlements in South America.
Red Cross of the English Empire: Stands for the Saint George’s Cross of England.
Red Crown of the English Empire: This Imperial Crown was attached to the old flag of England when the English Empire was proclaimed by King Henry IX (Emperor Henry I Braveheart).
Minor Coat of Arms of Summerset: The CoA displays the Golden Rose, a native yellow rose of South America, which is the national symbol of Summerset.
